The short answer is that the Bank of Japan (BOJ) is letting the market set yields. For years, the BOJ has run an extremely loose monetary policy, including capping yields at extremely low levels and negative interest rates. Limited economic growth and disinflation made such a policy possible. However, inflationary pressures and a weak yen have prompted the BOJ to shift its stance. Policy normalization started in 2023, when the BOJ allowed 10-year JGB yields to rise above 1% for the first time in over a decade.

Today, 10-year and 30-year bond yields are 1.60% and 3.20%, respectively. They better reflect expectations of continued tighter monetary policy as inflation lingers above the BOJ’s 2% target. Moreover, the yen’s persistent weakness, exacerbated by low interest rates versus the U.S., forces the BOJ to encourage higher interest rates to stabilize the currency.

Japan’s improving economy and higher inflation lead many to anticipate that the BOJ may entirely abandon interest rate caps and negative interest rates. Additionally, with public debt exceeding 250% of GDP, concerns about long-term fiscal sustainability are percolating. Consequently, these factors add to the upward pressure on yields.

The risk to US and global stock and bond investors is that higher Japanese yields and a stronger yen force a reversal of the yen carry trade. If you recall, we saw what that may look like in August 2024.

    Market Trading Update

Yesterday, we discussed the back drop to bonds. We also added to our longer-duration bond holding in portfolios due to the deep oversold condition. However, there is a rather large, and glaring mistake, between the current narrative that "deficts" are causing yields to rise. The problem is that we have been running deficits for more than 40-years, and deficits today are lower than they were 5-years ago. But therein lies the key has to why rates are currently higher than they were in 2020.

    Deficit Vs Yield

As shown, correlation between deficits and rates makes sense. The reduction in the deficit since 2020 has been a function of stronger growth and less debt issuance. As deficits decline, and economic growth strengthens borrowers are able to ask for more yield. Conversely, when economic growth is declining sharply, and deficits increase due to increased debt issuance, yields fall. You can see this correlation in the chart below.

    Deficit vs GDP

As discussed yesterday, in the short-term narratives drive yields along with massive short-positioning and NO central bank interventions. When the Federal Reserve and the Treasury begin to intervene to control the rise in yields, which they will to protect financial stability, the reversal in yields will be rather sharp. However, that could be months or quarters away.

In the mean time, we will have to take advantage of swings in the bond market to increase returns from our fixed income holdings. Currently, as shown, longer-duration bonds are deeply oversold and due for a reflexive rally. What causes that rally? Who knows, but some headline will emerge suggesting lower inflation or slower economic growth and yields will respond accordingly.

As shown, TLT is currently trading 3-standard deviations below the mean which suggest a rally to 88 (the mean) is possible which is a decent short-term trade setup.

The 20-Year Auction Was Not As Bad As Its Headlines

    • The Terrifying Implications From Today's Dismal 20-Year Auction- Twitter/X
    • The U.S. just held a 20-year Treasury bond auction, and it went terribly- Twitter/X
    • 20-Year Treasury Auction Goes Badly - Barrons

Social and traditional media made Wednesday's 20-year auction out as one of the worst Treasury auctions ever. We, however, would categorize it as tepid. Let's review a few facts and let you make up your own mind.

For starters, the 20-year Treasury is an orphan bond of sorts. The demand and supply of 20-year bonds are not as large as the more liquid 2-year, 3-year, 5-year, 10-year, and 30-year bonds. As such, the reduced liquidity and smaller auction sizes tend to lead to more volatile auction results.

The Tweet of the Day shows that the "tail" on the auction was 1.2 bps. Thus, the auction rate was 1.2 bps higher than where it was trading prior to the auction. The graph shows that a +/- 1bps result is somewhat normal.

Consider that indirect bidders, predominantly central banks, took 88% of the auction. Direct bidders, the backstop for auctions, took a relatively low 8%. In other words, the auction did not need the largest banks to support it. The graph below shows that the direct bidder allotment was on the low side of recent auctions.

Indeed, the auction could have been better, but the media exaggerates the outcome to feed their current bearish bond narrative.

The Role of Bonds in a Well-Balanced Investment Portfolio

When building a strong and diversified portfolio, most investors focus heavily on stocks. But bonds play an equally important role—especially when it comes to managing risk and providing consistent income. Incorporating bonds into your investment portfolio can lead to more stable investment strategies and long-term financial resilience.

Whether you’re just beginning to invest or looking to rebalance your asset allocation, understanding how bonds work and how to use them effectively is key to building a well-rounded portfolio.

Putin Orders Army To Establish Big Border Buffer Zone Inside Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin is revisiting a strategy first proclaimed last year, but which appeared to be thwarted or put on hold by Ukraine's Kursk invasion. But now with Kursk liberated from the over six-month Ukrainian troop occupation, Putin is talking a 'buffer zone' along the southern border once again.

Russian troops are seeking to carve out a large security buffer zone along the Russia-Ukraine border, Putin announced Thursday during a meeting with ministers and Kremlin officials. "We have approved the creation of a necessary security buffer zone along our borders. Our armed forces are actively working to accomplish this task," the Russian leader stated.

    Kremlin.ru

Putin is fresh off his in-person tour of Kursk region, which happened Tuesday, which was a first since the August cross-border invasion by Ukraine.

Yet the southern oblasts are still threatened by near-daily artillery and drone fire. A big part of the rationale for a buffer zone is for full stability to return to Russian border towns and villages, for example especially in Belgorod:

He emphasized that, given the recent developments in the Kursk, Belgorod, and Bryansk regions, immediate efforts are required to restore and rebuild areas affected by recent events. This includes assisting local residents in returning to their native villages, provided security conditions allow. Furthermore, it is essential to rehabilitate transportation networks and other infrastructure, ensure the smooth operation of industrial and agricultural enterprises, and support entrepreneurs and their employees.

This month alone has seen hundreds of drones launched from Ukraine onto southern oblasts, with some drones targeting as far as Moscow, which has resulted in commercial flight stoppages this week (not for the first time).

The timing of Putin's buffer zone plan is very significant, as President Trump is currently being widely perceived as 'stepping back' from pursuit of a final peace settlement.

"The enemy chooses targets that have no military significance. It targets ambulances, farm machinery, women and children. We have taken a decision to create a buffer zone along the border of the Kursk, Bryansk and Belgorod regions."

    — Margarita Simonyan (@M_Simonyan) May 22, 2025

The NY Times is currently reporting that Trump is ready to throw his hands up in the air and say 'not my problem' as neither side is ready to compromise:

For months, President Trump has been threatening to simply walk away from the frustrating negotiations for a cease-fire between Russia and Ukraine.

After a phone call on Monday between Mr. Trump and President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, that appears to be exactly what the American president is doing. The deeper question now is whether he is also abandoning America’s three-year-long project to support Ukraine, a nascent democracy that he has frequently blamed for being illegally invaded.

The Times concluded, "In a reversal, President Trump appears to have backed off joining a European push for new sanctions on Russia, seemingly eager to move on to doing business deals with it."

And yet, on Thursday, the Western allies are speaking loudly:

G7 FINANCE LEADERS SAYS IF A RUSSIA/UKRAINE CEASEFIRE IS NOT AGREED, THEY WILL CONTINUE TO EXPLORE ALL POSSIBLE OPTIONS, INCLUDING FURTHER RAMPING UP SANCTIONS - COMMUNIQUE

As for Putin, is he readying to expand operations in Ukraine? This buffer zone could mean new efforts of the Russian military to control chunks of Kharkov, Sumy, and Chernigov. Sumy next?

NEW | Russian President Vladimir Putin likely orchestrated a meeting with Kursk Oblast officials on May 20 to set conditions to justify the renewal of Russian plans to seize Sumy City and illegally annex Sumy Oblast. (1/9) pic.twitter.com/482IyJc2b7

    — Critical Threats (@criticalthreats) May 22, 2025

It was a mere day ago that Putin expressed the following in a joking fashion:

President Vladimir Putin appeared to make light of militarily seizing Ukraine’s Sumy region during a visit to Russia’s southwestern Kursk region, even as the Kremlin claims to be pursuing a negotiated end to the war.

The moment was captured on video published by the state-run news agency TASS, in which a local official from the Glushkovsky district near the border with Ukraine told Putin: “Sumy should be ours.”

“We cannot live like we’re on some kind of peninsula. There should be more of us [Russians]. At least in Sumy,” the official, Pavel Zolotarev, added. “With you as commander-in-chief, we’ll win.”

All of this makes Kiev and Europe extremely worried that Putin will have a freer hand, given Trump could be lowering the pressure on Moscow. The White House has thus far resisted ramping up sanctions, despite Europe's best lobbying efforts.

"Never Heard Of Him": Notable Columbia Prof Says He Isn't Sure Obama Attended Columbia University

By Oliver Darcy of Campus Reform

In a recent interview, a well-known professor who taught at Columbia University for 46 years questioned whether or not President Obama actually attended the Ivy League school.

Prominent Columbia professor Henry Graff says he isn’t sure President Obama ever attended the Ivy League school.

“I taught every significant politician that ever studied at Columbia,” said Columbia Emeritus Professor of History Henry Graff, in an interview last week with Wayne Root, a contributor at The Blaze. “Between American History and Diplomatic History, one way or another, they all had to come through my classes.”

“Not Obama,” he continued. “I never had a student with that name in any of my classes. I never met him, never saw him, never heard of him.”

Graff alleged that “none of the other Columbia professors knew him either” and said he is “very upset” to hear Obama referred to as a graduate of Columbia University.

“I am angry when I hear Obama called ‘the first President of the United States from Columbia University,’” he said. “I don’t consider him a Columbia student. I have no idea what he did on the Columbia campus. No one knows him.”

Graff is the recipient of the Kaul Foundation Award of Excellence in the field of education, an honor that is tied to a prize of $100,000. He is the author of multiple books and is known for teaching the first course on the history of the Presidency.

Market perspective is essential in avoiding investing mistakes. With the media constantly pushing a “Markets In Turmoil” narrative, it’s no wonder that investor sentiment recently reached some of the lowest levels since the financial crisis. The following chart is the z-score of the retail and professional investor sentiment composite index of bullish sentiment.

    Net bullish sentiment z-score

Notably, we are in one of the longest stretches of more extreme bearish sentiment outside structural bear markets. (Read "Death Crosses And Market Bottoms" for more detail and an explanation of the difference between event-driven corrections and structural bear markets.)

    Bearish Investment Sentiment Extremes

Of course, given the recent market decline and the surge in "bearish" media-driven narratives, it is unsurprising that bearish sentiment has risen. However, this is where investors start making mistakes in their investment process.

As noted, we are in one of the most extended stretches of bearish sentiment outside a structural bear market. The difference between event-driven corrections and structural bear markets is crucial to understand. However, extremely negative investor sentiment and positioning are the hallmarks of the end of corrections and bear markets. To wit:

In other words, historically speaking, the death cross, more often than not, is a potential contrarian indicator. The difference between whether the death cross is a shorter-term corrective process or a larger “bear market” decline depends mainly on whether the cause of the market decline is “event-driven” or “structural.” This context is important when examining the current decline and triggering of the “death cross.” The chart below shows the difference in the length of “event-driven” versus “structural” corrections, signified by the triggering of the “death cross.” The dot.com and financial crisis periods were structural events, as significant corporate failures and credit-market dislocations occurred amid deep economic contractions. However, outside of those two significant structural impacts, all other “events” were short-lived, and markets soon recovered."

Death cross and golden cross periods in the market

This is because when sentiment is the most bearish and the markets trigger longer-term sell signals, much of the selling has already been exhausted. Nonetheless, now that we are constantly connected to financial media, we are inundated with headlines designed to get “clicks” more than delivering real news. “Investor Resolutions For 2025 noted that investor psychology is the most significant driver of investing failure over time. This cycle of human emotions is continually repeated through investment cycles.

Investor greed fear cycle in the market

While many behavioral biases significantly negatively impact investor outcomes, from herding to loss avoidance to confirmation bias, "anchoring" is one of the most important.

    Schedule an appointment

    The Anchoring Problem

“Anchoring is a heuristic revealed by behavioral finance that describes the subconscious use of irrelevant information, such as the purchase price of a security, as a fixed reference point (or anchor) for making subsequent decisions about that security.” – Investopedia

“Anchoring,” also known as the “relativity trap,” is the tendency to compare our current situation within the scope of our limited experiences. For example, I would be willing to bet that you could tell me exactly what you paid for your first home and what you eventually sold it for. However, can you tell me exactly what you paid for your first soap bar, hamburger, or pair of shoes? Probably not.

The reason is that the home purchase was a major “life” event. Therefore, we attach particular significance to that event and remember it vividly. If there was a gain between the purchase and sale price of the home, it was a positive event, and therefore, we assume that the next home purchase will have a similar result. We are mentally “anchored” to that event and base our future decisions around very limited data.

Today, investors are trained by the financial media to “anchor” to a fixed point in the market. Such is why investors consistently measure performance, relative to the market, from January 1st to December 31st. Or, worse, we measure performance from the peak of an advance. For example:

    • The market is up 140% from the March 2020 lows.
    • The market is down 10% from the 2025 peak.
    • Or, the market is down 6% for the year.

The problem is that most investors did not buy the 2020 bottom or sell the 2022 peak. However, one of the most significant forms of anchoring is portfolio "high water marks." The high water mark is the peak value of an investor's portfolio over a given time frame. For example, at the market's peak in 2025, an investor had a portfolio value of $1,000,000. During the recent market correction, the portfolio value declined to $950,000. While that $50,000 loss is significant and is certainly concerning for that investor, it must be put into the context of what is happening in the markets.

    • First, before the correction that started in February, the market had rallied nearly 5%. Therefore, our example investor started the year with a portfolio value of roughly $960,000 that grew to $1,000,000.
    • Secondly, while the $50,000 decline is significant, the investor is "anchored" to the portfolio's high-water mark.
    • As noted above, the market is down 6% for the year, but the investor is at roughly the same level as he started this year.
    • In other words, the portfolio return is roughly a loss of 1% versus a market decline of 6%.

Yes, a decline of $50,000 is significant, but these “anchor” points provide little perspective for the average investor regarding their relative position to their financial goals. However, these “anchors,” tied to constant media updates, feed our emotional decision-making processes driven by “greed” or “fear.”

Let’s take a look at an example:

As of Friday’s close, the market is down 10% from its all-time high.

Market year to date decline from peak.

As we warned about several times in 2024 and early this year, when a 10% correction eventually came, it would “feel” worse than it was because of the long period of low volatility.

Yes, it feels terrible. However, investors are now focusing on that “high-water mark.”

But this is the goal of the Wall Street marketing machine. Getting you to focus on current gains or losses creates a “sense of urgency” for you to do something. Why?

“Money in motion creates fees and revenue for Wall Street.”

Therefore, pushing you to take action may not necessarily be “profitable” for you, but it IS profitable for Wall Street.

    Changing Your Anchor Point

To reduce your “emotional action button,” step back and change your “anchor” point.

If your portfolio is down 10% from the recent peak, ask yourself two questions:

    1. Am I losing money? Or,
    2. Is my portfolio still aligned with my investing goals?

If my goal is to average a 6% annualized return, where am I today relative to that goal? The issue of using the “high-water mark” as the “anchor” is that it resets psychologically to measure our performance from that level. Therefore, we should look back at where we were on a trailing one-year basis. If our goal was 6% a year, we almost doubled that goal over the last 12 months. All of a sudden, the recent decline doesn't seem as significant.

market performance over the last year.

However, let's assume an investor was unlucky enough to have bought the market's peak before the pandemic's onset. Despite the pandemic shutdown, surging inflation, fears of recession, the Russia/Ukraine war, and every negative headline, the portfolio is still 63% higher. In other words, the portfolio has an annualized return of roughly 12%, double what was required to meet the needed financial goals.

    Market performance since Covid.

The point here is that where you choose to “anchor” your analysis will significantly affect your emotional psychology when managing your money.

Yes, there has been a lot of volatility this year, but if I "anchor" my view to a longer-term time frame, the recent volatility is much less concerning.

    Market perspective is essential.

    Stick To Your Process

Does this mean you shouldn’t pay attention to your money or take action when things go wrong? Of course, not.

With the media fueling our fears 24/7, from “Fear Of Missing Out” to “Fear Of Losing It All,” it is difficult not to let our emotions get the better of us. However, “anchoring” our market perspective to a previous high-water mark or portfolio dollar value exacerbates our fragile emotional states.

In the “heat of the moment,” it is easy to get caught up in the emotional pull of markets and portfolio valuation changes. This past weekend's #BullBearReport discussed the requirement of being more like Dr. Spock from Star Trek when managing your money.

If I ask you what’s the risk in investing, you would answer the risk of losing money.

But there actually are two risks in investing: One is to lose money, and the other is to miss an opportunity. You can eliminate either one, but you can’t eliminate both at the same time. So the question is how you’re going to position yourself versus these two risks: straight down the middle, more aggressive or more defensive.

How do you avoid getting trapped by the devil? I’ve been in this business for over forty-five years now, so I’ve had a lot of experience.

In addition, I am not a very emotional person. In fact, almost all the great investors I know are unemotional. If you’re emotional then you’ll buy at the top when everybody is euphoric and prices are high. Also, you’ll sell at the bottom when everybody is depressed and prices are low. You’ll be like everybody else and you will always do the wrong thing at the extremes.” - Howard Marks

We all make “bad choices,” and we need guidelines to maintain our market perspective.

A sizable contingent of investors and advisors has never experienced a real bear market. After a decade-long bull market cycle fueled by central bank liquidity, mainstream analysis believes the markets can only go higher. What has always been a concern to us is the rather cavalier attitude toward risk that the media promotes.

“Sure, a correction will eventually come, but that is just part of the deal.”

What gets lost during bull cycles, and is always found most brutally, is the devastation caused to wealth during inevitable declines.

Therefore, it remains essential to follow your investment discipline. If you don’t have a process, here are the guidelines we follow during tough markets.

    7-Rules To Follow

    1. Move slowly. There is no rush to make dramatic changes. Doing anything in a moment of “panic” tends to be the wrong thing.
    2. If you are overweight equities, DO NOT try to fully adjust your portfolio to your target allocation in one move. Again, after big declines, individuals feel like they “must” do something. Think logically above where you want to be and use the rally to adjust to that level.
    3. Begin by selling laggards and losers. These positions were dragging on performance as the market rose and they led on the way down.
    4. If you need risk exposure, add to sectors or positions performing with or outperforming the broader market.
    5. Move “stop-loss” levels up to recent lows for each position. Managing a portfolio without “stop-loss” levels is like driving with your eyes closed.
    6. Be prepared to sell into the rally and reduce overall portfolio risk. You will sell many positions at a loss simply because you overpaid for them to begin with. Selling at a loss DOES NOT make you a loser. It just means you made a mistake. Sell it, and move on with managing your portfolio. Not every trade will always be a winner. But keeping a loser will make you a loser of capital and opportunity.
    7. If none of this makes sense to you, please consider hiring someone to manage your portfolio for you. It will be worth the additional expense over the long term.

Keep your market perspective in check, avoid anchoring, and focus on your investment goals rather than market volatility.

    I hope this helps.

    Ideological Capture At Professional Societies

    Via Open The Books,

Disassembling and “deleting” federal agencies is proving to be a difficult task for the Trump administration, which has been working to slash bureaucratic red tape and federal spending, especially for left-wing radicalism like Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).

Unlike some of the intermediate steps President Trump has taken through Executive Order, truly closing an agency will require a 60-person majority in a Senate vote, a tall order with only 53 Republicans in the upper chamber.

But there are still some low-hanging fruits left for the administration to pick. Chiefly, it can end relationships with all professional societies promoting principles of DEI and radical gender ideology.

The federal government contracts with a myriad of these organizations across all the major agencies. Professional societies set the atmosphere and guidelines for practitioners in their fields, and they can have hundreds of thousands of members.

If those organizations become ideologically captured, the impact will be felt across society.

There is no reason for the federal government to fund such organizations. DOGE should identify these organizations and give Congress and taxpayers the information they need to make informed budget decisions.

Doing so will allow state and local governments to make better decisions as well.

As DOGE continues the work of identifying bloat, some of those activities and decisions will shift to state and local government where they rightly belong. But elected officials will still be presented with the same outside groups seeking their business. Officials at the state and local level, and taxpayers who fund those entities, have the right to know more about organizations seeking public funds.

The following are just a handful of examples of professional societies that have become ideologically captured:

    SHAPE America

The Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) America is a professional organization representing over 200,000 physical education teachers.

Federal spending since 2020: Over $2.5 million
$2.52 million from CDC, $82,245 from the DoDEA

The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA), which runs the Pentagon’s K-12 school system for the children of servicemembers worldwide, contracts with SHAPE to provide training to their teachers. SHAPE creates learning standards for instructors to teach to, such as the 2021 National Sex Education Standards, promoted on its website.

These standards are currently featured on the CDC website.

    They include goals like:

    • By 2nd grade, define gender identity

    • By 5th grade children should be able to describe the role of puberty blockers on those who identify as transgender. Fifth graders should differentiate between sexual orientation and gender identity and explain that gender expression and gender identity exist along a spectrum

    • By 8th grade define anal sex and describe “pregnancy options” including abortion.

Gender Spectrum, a nonprofit organization that promotes the concept of “neogenders,” whereby students can “identify” their “gender" as animals, objects, and mental health disorders, also consulted on these standards.

During a 2021 DoDEA presentation on implementing SHAPE standards, a DoDEA teacher articulated the extremist ideology inculcated by SHAPE, writing in presentation materials that talking about “heterosexuality as the ‘norm’” somehow “causes conflict.”

Before the Trump administration issued its executive order on gender ideology, SHAPE promoted the anti-science stance that women and men are biologically equal.

(READ THE EO: Defending women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government)

The SHAPE website included the claim that “even though young people who have gone through a male puberty are taller and stronger than most young people who have gone through a female puberty, it is important to acknowledge that not all boys are stronger, taller, faster or more athletically talented than all girls.” The website also included support for the use of harmful puberty blockers to “neutraliz[e]” that valid concern.

Science is clear: with extremely rare exceptions, males are categorically stronger and faster than females.

The neo-Marxist concept of “equity” is also a fundamental principle at SHAPE. Indeed, the Centers for Disease Control is currently contracting with SHAPE to “engage school administrators as champions to advance healthy schools through equitable and inclusive programs, policies, and practices” in support of the CDC’s “Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child” framework for addressing health in schools.

North American Association for Environmental Education

A professional organization representing about 20,000 members, typically in the education field.

Federal spending since 2020: $15.7 million
$8.8 million from EPA, $4.7 from Commerce, $1.7 from Department of Agriculture, and $505,500 from the Department of the Interior

President Trump’s Executive Order on Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity prohibited DEI practices for federal contractors. Before this order was given, the NAAEE website was replete with “Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion” (JEDI) content. Teachers were recommended resources like “Teaching About Race, Racism, and Police Violence” by the Southern Poverty Law Center, “Your Kids Aren’t Too Young to Talk About Race,” and “A Guide to Gender Identity Terms.”

While the website is seemingly getting scrubbed of DEI verbiage, some remnants remain. NAAEE announced the addition of five new board members in 2021, stating their credentials would help “push for social justice and center equity in all that we do.” Two are still on the board.

The organization houses a Coalition for Climate Education Policy’s steering committee, whose governance documents state that members agree to “always consider equity and justice in our collective work.”

The costliest NAAEE program funded by the federal government is the ee360+ initiative, which supports “a cadre of environmental education leaders to increase environmental literacy for everyone, everywhere.” These education leaders are assisted by federal and state institutions and nonprofits to disseminate NAAEE’s “Environmental Education Guidelines.”

"Decoding Whiteness” educator training provided by NAAEE

The NAAEE Guidelines push left-wing concepts of “environmental justice” and “equity,” and fuse environmental education with “civic engagement.” In other words, students are made to develop a “critical perspective” by fixating on their own and others’ race, “gender identity,” national origin, and socio-economic status. Then, they are asked to advocate for policies taking their new critical perspective into consideration.

While environmental education sounds nice, children are not learning about tadpoles and butterflies. Through NAAEE the federal government is funding left-wing advocacy and woke identity politics in classrooms nation-wide.

The federal checkbook USASpending indicates that federal spending since 2020 is $1.3 million, however these figures are undercounted.

NCHE’s tax documents show that from June 2023-June 2024 the organization received $2.4 million in federal tax dollars between the Department of Education, National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Library of Congress.

Between 2019 and 2021 NCHE received $1,474,657 in American History and Civics grants from the Department of Education. The grants were to develop a “Learning and Exploring American Democracy” (LEAD) project. NCHE was also awarded two other American History and Civics grants in 2023, worth over $2.5 million each, disbursed over five years. While these grants show up on the Department of Education website and on the NCHE tax documents, they are not represented on the federal checkbook, highlighting issues with reporting on USASpending.

By examining some of the NCHE activities funded by these grants, we can get an idea of how the organization is putting its taxpayer dollars to use.

LEAD is intended to provide history and civics-related resources for teachers to incorporate into their lessons. Part of this program includes at least one “Equity Summit,” which, along with select other webinars offered by the program, raise questions about the history and civics lessons the federal government is funding for American children.

The keynote speaker for the 2020 Equity Summit, Hasan Jeffries advocated for the removal of historical monuments, even of Christopher Columbus in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio:

“So here in Columbus, Ohio there have been moves and movements with some success to remove statues of Christopher Columbus for example, so we're not just talking about Confederate soldiers and monuments to them, we're talking about all of these figures, all of these memorials that commemorate—that celebrate rather—white supremacy. And so the Black Lives Matter protests are very much about the past as well.”

Jeffries goes on to say that racism is foundational to the American nation:

“In fact, racism is very much encoded in our DNA. Racism and capitalism together are really that double helix of our DNA; they are intertwined, they have been with us from the beginning. They are encoded in our society. They are encoded in our person.”

Other presentations include the radical left-wing Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Hard History program, which provides materials and advice for teachers to engage in the topic of American slavery.

During the talk, speaker Kate Shuster suggested students are complicit in slavery unless they take steps to “redress inequalities:”

“We need to make it clear to students when we teach about slavery that the question is not ‘are they guilty of the crime of enslaving people?’ The question is ‘How are they going to move forward to redress the inequalities that are left over from the abolition of slavery?’ So, complicity can exist without the act of owning slaves, but people don't like to be told that they're complicit.”

Shuster was invited back for another presentation on the same topic for a LEAD program webinar in 2021. That video is not available.

Another Equity Summit was held in 2024, this one kicking off with a “land acknowledgment.” NCHE Executive Director Jessica Ellison displayed a “You are on Dakota/Ojibwe Land” poster behind her.

The irony of an organization -- primarily funded by the U.S. government-- denying the sovereignty of the United States is evidently lost on Ellison.

Jessica Ellison, who became NCHE Executive Director in 2023, recommended the controversial book White Fragility to teachers in June 2020.

Other recent activity includes telling teachers how to fight back against “book bans” of divisive, pornographic content in school libraries

Unfathomably, in the age of DOGE, NCHE received a new grant through the Library of Congress in April 2025. Through this grant, NCHE will direct the Library’s regional granting entity in the Great Plains region, deciding which other organizations in the area can access taxpayer funding.

    CONCLUSION

As of May 2, DOGE has claimed an estimated $160 billion in savings for taxpayers. We’re working to verify this total, but more must be done to broaden the impact of their critically important work. All of the organizations profiled here have ongoing grants that have not been cut by DOGE. These organizations have proven to be incredibly effective at spreading their ideas throughout society.

As DOGE finds efficiencies and cuts waste agency by agency, auditors must identify grantees trafficking in radical politics and share their findings with the public and policymakers at all levels of government. Taxpayers have the right to know where their tax dollars are going so they can hold their elected officials accountable.

US Withdrawal: ECB Warns Of Dollar Shortage

    Submitted by Thomas Kolbe

    ECB Warns of Dollar Shortage

The rift between the European Union and the United States is deepening. Washington’s withdrawal from the Ukraine conflict is becoming increasingly apparent—while Brussels continues to confront. Financial markets are already moving in different directions. Now the ECB has warned of an impending dollar shortage.

Trade wars are not merely disputes over tariffs and the flow of goods. At their core, they are battles for power in the currency markets—arenas where geopolitical conflicts are fought without bloodshed, yet often with devastating economic consequences for the losers. The most striking example today: the deliberate devaluation of the Chinese yuan. Beneath this maneuver lies more than just monetary policy. It functions as a pressure valve for domestic tensions, capital misallocations (such as the collapse of the real estate sector), and labor market strain. Artificially cheapened exports shift some of this burden abroad. Simultaneously, the Communist Party consolidates domestic power. The systematic devaluation of the yuan slows the rise of a middle class with purchasing power—thus stifling demands for political participation. That’s the wind blowing through China.

    The Plaza Accord as Blueprint

A look at the trade conflict unleashed by U.S. President Donald Trump and the imposition of temporary tariffs reveals: behind the political theater, a realignment of global currency markets is underway—akin to the Plaza Accord of 1985, when the G5 states corrected the overvaluation of the dollar to rebalance trade flows. The U.S. is no longer willing to tolerate the structural overvaluation of its currency—a consequence of its role as the world’s reserve currency. Trump made it clear: the days of bleeding out American industry in favor of foreign production sites are over.

Trump’s tariff offensive targets not just China. A reordering of trade flows via currency mechanisms between the two superpowers seems inevitable, as the damage from further escalation would be too great. But Trump’s real focus lies on the European Union—as he has repeatedly and unmistakably stated. “We have a deficit of $350 billion [with the EU]. They don’t buy our cars, nor our agricultural products,” Trump said of transatlantic trade.

These relations increasingly suffer under hidden trade barriers, harmonization mandates, and Europe’s norm-protectionism. Trump has called the EU a “tough nut to crack” in establishing fair trade relations. Notably, 75 percent of EU member states’ customs revenues flow directly into the European Commission’s budget under Ursula von der Leyen.

Carefully concealed under slogans like the “Green New Deal” or the mobility transition, the EU runs a subsidy engine rivaling China’s interventionist model. The protectionism vigorously defended by European actors falls squarely into this category. Over time, the EU has developed an incentive structure fiercely shielded from external competition. When Trump refers to a “tough nut,” he means this corporatist complex—the alliance of powerful industrial interests, centralized governance from Brussels, and the defense of the single market via a wall of non-tariff barriers.

    Dollar Shortage as Power Lever

Behind Europe’s protective wall, the situation is shifting. After years of Brexit paralysis, Brussels and London are now searching for ways out of their trade deadlock. The U.S.’s 90-day tariff moratorium has jolted both parties into action—the practical result being a partial reversal of Brexit. Together, they are preparing for a protracted negotiation marathon with Washington, united in a front of protectionists. But Washington has already found a fitting lever to crack Fortress Europe: the Eurodollar market and the credit mechanisms outside the Federal Reserve’s jurisdiction.

With the end of the LIBOR contract—a former global benchmark for short-term interbank loans—on June 30, 2023, and the introduction of the U.S. alternative SOFR (Secured Overnight Financing Rate), the United States has fully seized control over dollar loan pricing. While LIBOR had been dominated by European banks and subject to interest-rate manipulation, SOFR is based on actual secured repo transactions in the U.S. market—largely immune to manipulation. Under this new structure, dollar credit becomes more expensive—bad news for Europeans long accustomed to cheap dollar financing.

The United States is deliberately freeing itself from the influence of European institutions that had previously defended their solvency through low interest rates and distorted global monetary conditions. With the loss of LIBOR, Europe has forfeited a key control instrument over its dollar financing and now faces the challenge of adapting to a strictly market-based regime.

    Communications Failure or Naivety?

But as of Monday, it is clear: the United States is preparing to wield the dollar as an even sharper weapon. Apparently, the Trump administration—together with the Federal Reserve—has frozen existing dollar swap lines with the Eurozone. These swaps are liquidity arrangements between central banks in U.S. dollars. Eurozone banks can no longer access emergency dollar liquidity when shortages arise. The ECB publicly called on Eurozone banks to audit their dollar reserves and identify possible shortfalls. Has the ECB inadvertently exposed the asymmetrical power structure between Europe and the United States? In a crisis, the ECB might be forced to go cap-in-hand to the Fed’s Discount Window for dollar loans.

Whether this resulted from a communications failure or a leak inside the ECB’s Frankfurt tower remains unclear. What is certain: officials from the European Central Bank publicly warned European commercial banks of a looming dollar shortage—a scenario with serious consequences. Roughly 17 to 20 percent of all loans in the euro area are denominated in U.S. dollars. Much of the EU’s foreign trade depends on access to the reserve currency. If this tap runs dry, supply chains could rupture, and transatlantic trade may partially grind to a halt. One thing is clear: with this financial lever, Donald Trump and the United States wield a geopolitical weapon of considerable force.

    A View of the Chessboard

Placed in a broader geopolitical context, it becomes clear: the U.S. is using its currency dominance more assertively, shifting the tectonics of global economic power. Geopolitical rivals within the BRICS bloc are striving to escape the dollar’s grip. But success is far from assured. Ironically, the alternative system envisioned by capitals like Beijing and Moscow hinges on the digital yuan—an instrument of absolute state control. Distrust among even China’s closest partners is palpable. The yuan remains globally irrelevant as a transactional currency; only 2.2 percent of the world’s foreign exchange reserves are held in yuan. The U.S. dollar still dominates the global economy, with a 57 percent share of reserves. Efforts to bypass this dominance through a partially gold-backed settlement mechanism are nothing short of a monetary suicide mission.

Meanwhile, even America’s closest allies must reckon with an uncomfortable reality: dollar swap lines—privileged access to dollar liquidity—have become geopolitical bargaining chips in upcoming negotiations with the U.S. Brussels would do well to acknowledge this reality. The era of Euro-protectionism is drawing to a close—to the benefit of European consumers and the continent’s long-term economic resilience.

BBC Reporter Shows How To Spread Extreme Climate Alarm

Authored by Chris Morrison via The Daily Sceptic,

A gleeful, self-satisfied Mr Punch was often heard to remark: “That’s the way to do it.” Today we examine how Mark Poynting, one of the BBC’s top doom-mongering Net Zero activists, uses the trusted ‘scientists say’ message to turn a centennial sea level rise of around 30 cm into prose stating: “The world could see hugely damaging sea-level rises of several metres or more over the coming centuries”. Added fear is inserted into the mix with the warning that the disappearing act will occur, “even if the ambitious target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C is met, scientists have warned”.

Poynting and the BBC are essentially telling a worldwide audience that coastal land and beyond across the world could be overwhelmed with several metres of sea rise if the global temperature is three-tenths of a degree centigrade higher. This message properly belongs on a doomsday sandwich board walker, not least because the rise in temperature is almost within the margin of error of constantly-adjusted and unnaturally-heated global temperature datasets.

Extrapolating computer modelled data rigged with improbable ‘pathways’ that even the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change more or less dismiss as ‘low confidence’ – that’s the way to do it.

The BBC story is based on the recent compilation and interpretation of material from a group led by Geography Professor Chris Stokes. This provides just the sort of findings that are catnip to the BBC. At one point the authors seem to think that humans can control the amount of ice on both Greenland and Antarctica, arguing that the global mean temperature should be reduced with further work “urgently required to more precisely determine a ‘safe limit’ for ice sheets“. Given the catastrophic consequences of a rapid collapse of one or more ice sheets, the authors state, “we conclude that adopting the precautionary principle is imperative and that a global mean temperature cooler than present is required to keep ice sheets broadly in equilibrium”.

That’s the way to do it. Poynting could have informed his gaslit readers that overall ice loss in Antarctica is minimal with suggestions of an annual 100 gigatonnes reduction equivalent to 0.00041% of the total mass – well within the margin of error. At current rates of melting on a continent that has seen no overall warming for at least 70 years, it would take around 300,000 years for all the ice to disappear. And this assumes no intervening glaciations, a new ice age, or just more accurate measurements. Instead he reports the comments of the Stokes crew that the “major concern is that melting could accelerate further beyond ‘tipping points’ due to warming caused by humans”. That’s the way to do it – talk about ‘tipping points’ that never occur and then cover yourself by adding “though it’s not clear exactly how these mechanisms work and where the thresholds sit”.

Instead of “not exactly clear”, try, “haven’t got a clue”. But it is “precautionary” to remove hydrocarbons from modern use and drive humanity back to the dark ages – just in case the model inventions do occur.

It is of course easy to see how the metres-high scare is concocted. Under a low emission ‘pathway’ used by computer models, the rise by 2100 in sea levels due to ice melting ranges from 4 cm to 37 cm. Such is the range, another imputation of cluelessness might be justified. But a mere 37 cm doesn’t look very enticing on the sandwich board even though it is higher than the current trajected growth, so the highest pathway was consulted to give 12-52 cm. Alas, this is still pretty dismal when mass climate psychosis is the order of the day, so the suggestion from the IPCC was noted that it could not rule out that the pathway with ‘low confidence’ could point to a total sea level rise  of over 15 metres by 2300. That’s the way to do it. Treble metres, and more, all round.

It might be noted at this point that the improbable pathway known as SSP5-8.5 is in common use in climate science circles and is behind most if not all the computer modelled alarms that gaslight the readers of almost all mainstream media. The science writer Roger Pielke Jr has long been a critic of the 8.5 pathway that provides the important propaganda messaging backing the collectivist Net Zero fantasy. He states that the continuing misuse of these scenarios has become pervasive and consequential, “so that we can view it as one of the most significant failures of scientific integrity in the 21st century so far”. His short explanation as to why it has been so popular for so long: “Groupthink fuelled by a misinformation campaign by activist scientists.”

Activist journalists as well. Poynting is rapidly emerging as the BBC climate activist to watch in a strong field including Justin Rowlatt and Matt McGrath. Who can forget his recent sterling ‘scientists say’ effort that the Gulf Stream “appears to be getting weaker” under the headline, ‘Could the UK actually get colder with global warming?’ This effort drew much critical appreciation, not least because it headed off the awkward findings published the month before in a Nature paper that observed the Gulf Stream had not declined in strength since the 1960s.

Jihadists Launch Deadly Attack On Russian Airbase On Syria's Coast

In another clear indicator of just how drastically everything has changed in Syria in the wake of Bashar al-Assad's ouster in December last year, a militant group attempted to storm Russia's Hmeimim air base on Syria’s coast on Wednesday. Already the future of the base is uncertain, but Russia has still been maintaining it - given also Hmeimim is Moscow's only airbase on the Mediterranean.

"Militants attacked a Russian air base in Syria, killing two soldiers, a Syrian government official and a local activist said Wednesday," according to The Associated Press. Russian statements, which offered little detail, did not indicate if the slain were Russian soldiers or possibly foreign nationals who were contractors.

At least two militants were killed during their assault on the airbase. They are being widely reported as foreign Islamist fighters affiliated with the new Syrian government's military under President Sharaa (Jolani).

Russian Hmeimim Air Base in Jabla in Latakia, Syria. Anadolu Agency

The Jolani/HTS government has tried to distance itself from the attack, as it is still seeking diplomatic normalization with Russia and a reset in relations:

The government official said the two militants who were killed were foreign nationals who had worked as military trainers at a naval college that was training members of the new government’s military. He said they had acted on their own in attacking the base and were not officially affiliated with any faction.

Damascus has on Thursday deployed additional forces in an effort to stabilize the security situation in villages near the airbase.

"The city of Jableh and the villages surrounding the Russian Hmeimim air base in the Jableh countryside are witnessing a security alert. Heavy deployment of public security forces has been observed in the villages of Al-Sharashir and Al-Qubaisa, both close to the base," the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) says.

SOHR had further described "clashes in which medium and heavy machine guns were used, coinciding with the sounding of alarm sirens inside the base" - when the incident unfolded.

One regional outlet has said Russian soldiers were killed, and that it was Uzbek terrorists behind the assault:

According to a report by the Erem outlet, the 20 May attack resulted in the killing of three Russian soldiers and the injury of at least six others. The report says the attack was carried out by an Uzbek-led faction, which afterwards began to mobilize in the village of Al-Sharashir, just two kilometers from the base.

Erem also said the Uzbek armed group, responsible for past atrocities including the killing of children, have displaced and intimidated scores of residents and have seized homes in in the nearby town.

This coastal area near Latakia has for months seen attacks and massacres conducted by Islamic militant factions against the minority Alawite community of Syria. Christians and Druze have also been targeted.

Thousands of Alawites have been reported killed, and while the Jolani government has formally condemned the killings, eyewitnesses have consistently said the attacks had the involvement of HTS (Hayat Tahrir al-Sham) fighters, which remains the ruling faction in Damascus.

During the height of the sectarian killings, Alawite families sought refuge at Hmeimim air base in large numbers. Many thousands have been camped out on the base tarmac, with at times Russian troops seen handing out food and water and necessities of survival.

Back in March, Alawites expressed their distrust of HTS provided "security"...

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov earlier this week expressed particular concern about the chaotic situation in Syria, where he said extremist militant groups are carrying out "real ethnic cleansing and mass killings based on ethnic and sectarian identity". He blasted what he called the West’s "stunning" indifference to mass killings acts of terrorism.

The strong comments followed in the wake of President Trump meeting with Syria's Sharaa while in Saudi Arabia earlier this month. This stunned even some Washington officials, given that Sharaa/Jolani has long been a US-designated terrorist. Trump has said he wants to give Syria a fresh start, and also announced the US will drop sanctions.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio this week told a Senate hearing that Syria could collapse within just weeks; however, he didn't acknowledge in the testimony that it was the CIA's Operation Timber Sycamore which served to weaken and destabilize the country in the first place.

Will Russia Inevitably Reconcile With The EU & Ukraine Like Putin Predicts?

Authored by Andrew Korybko via Substack,

Putin predicted a few weeks back that Russia will inevitably reconcile with the EU and Ukraine. Regarding the first, he said that “I have no doubt whatsoever that we will, in due time, rebuild our relations with Europe. It’s only a matter of patience and effort.” As for the second, he said several days later that “It seems to me that this is inevitable despite the tragedy we are currently experiencing.” He’s known for being a realist, not a wishful thinker, which is why his prediction was so surprising to many observers.

While he might have timed them to convince Trump that he isn’t the obstacle to peace that Zelensky might have misled him to think that he is, the perception of which is responsible for complicating the peace process as of late, he probably does indeed believe what he said. Putin has always considered Russia to be a European country, albeit with a unique civilizational identity, while he explained in his magnum opus from June 2021 why he considers Russians and Ukrainians to be kindred people.

These views account for why he remained committed to the Minsk Accords despite neither France, Germany, nor Ukraine complying with them. Putin subconsciously projected his interests-driven (realist/rational) worldview onto them by assuming that they shared his vision of turning Ukraine into an (imperfect) economic bridge for facilitating the EU’s overland trade with Russia and China upon Kiev’s implementation of the Minsk Accords. He therefore struggled to understand their lack of compliance.

He couldn’t countenance that they were duping him this whole time till it was too late and he felt that he had no choice but to commence the special operation to defend Russia’s national security interests. Far from having an interests-driven (realist/rational) worldview, they all have an ideologically driven (utopian/irrational) one that prioritizes Russia’s containment over their own material interests. The EU’s is liberal-globalist while Ukraine’s is ultra-nationalist, so some differences exist, but they share this goal.

For them to meaningfully reconcile with Russia, their policymakers must first replace their ideologically driven worldview with an interests-driven one, which hasn’t yet happened. While there are signs of dissent within their societies, which takes the form of rising populist-nationalist sentiment in the EU and increasing opposition to Zelensky’s rule in Ukraine, electoral fraud and the secret police combine to prevent reformists from coming to power in both. This is the objectively existing state of affairs today.

While critics of the EU and Ukraine want to believe that positive change is “inevitable”, that can’t be taken for granted, and it would be irresponsible for Russia to prematurely formulate policy with this expectation in mind when they’re still in a state of hybrid and hot war with it respectively. To be clear, Putin didn’t signal that Russia should soften its policy towards either since he himself probably knows that his prediction might not come to pass within his lifetime, but he still hopes that it one day will.

Considering all of this, Putin’s prediction was probably only an attempt to influence Trump into not abandoning the peace process instead of him hinting at upcoming policy changes towards the EU and Ukraine. Even in the best-case scenario that Russia achieves most of its goals in the special operation, whether via diplomatic or military means, too much has happened for a reconciliation to occur anytime soon after. It’ll likely take a generation or more, if ever, but no one should get their hopes up.

Justin Trudeau Getting Two Pensions And Severance Worth Over $8 Million

Nothing like being rewarded for a job well done. Or, in Justin Trudeau's case, bringing an entire country to the brink of losing the respect of the entire world.

Maybe that's why Trudeau is reportedly getting not one but two pensions, and a $104,000 severance, totaling more than $8 million,  according to the Toronto Sun.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) released a chart Wednesday estimating pension and severance payouts for departing MPs.

“Pensions for former MPs depend on length of service and the rules at the time,” said CTF National Director Franco Terrazzano. “When Canadians see some of these numbers, the clear takeaway is that these political pensions are costing taxpayers too much money.”

The Sun writes that Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is eligible for two pensions: one for nearly 17 years as an MP and another for his 10 years as PM. Together, they’re valued at about $8.4 million. Starting at age 55, he’ll receive $141,000 annually from his MP pension, and another $73,000 a year from his PM pension when he turns 67.

“Trudeau is also going to be getting a severance just shy of $105,000,” Terrazzano added. “When we speak of leadership at the top, the first place for politicians to reign in the perks is to end the second pension for future prime ministers.”

A total of 110 former MPs qualify for either a pension, severance, or both. Those who served fewer than six years are eligible for severance worth half their salary—$104,900.

Notable names entitled to both pension and severance include Niki Ashton, Rachel Blaney, Jagmeet Singh, Seamus O’Regan, and others.

Despite being eligible, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has said he will refuse his severance.

“There are 13 former MPs who will get an annual starting pension of more than $100,000, while the vast majority of private sector workers don’t even get a workplace pension,” said Terrazzano. “There definitely needs to be a culture change in Ottawa, and that has to start with our elected representatives.”

8 Habits That Can Add Decades To Life

Authored by Brendon Fallon and Emily Allison via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours),

We all want to live as long and as healthily as possible. Many healthy living hacks, such as lounging in a hot sauna or taking a cold plunge, claim to increase lifespan, but how effective are they?

Growing research points to a different answer, suggesting that a few simple, consistent lifestyle habits can be far more effective at boosting longevity and well-being.

Avoid Smoking, Drugs, and Drinking Excessive Alcohol

Referring to a 2024 study examining nearly 720,000 U.S. veterans ages 40 to 99, Dr. Damon Noto, a rehabilitation medicine specialist, stated on the Epoch TV show Vital Signs that among eight lifestyle factors found to influence a person’s lifespan by more than 10 years, the most significant are whether a person has smoked, had an opioid use disorder, and their level of physical activity.

    Eat Healthy and Stay Active

We know exercise is a healthy habit, but do we consider it life-saving? Noto said the veteran’s study shows exercise may add as much as a decade or more to our lives. He also examined the type of physical activity in the study. People in the study often stayed active by engaging in natural movement, such as gardening or participating in sports with their friends. He believes these lifestyle or social activities are especially beneficial because building physical activity into someone’s daily life can help a person stay consistent with moving the body.

Diet can also impact a person’s lifespan. Those living in blue zones tend to eat homegrown and home-cooked foods and avoid overeating. Those who ate highly processed foods and sweets had shorter lifespans than those who followed a nutritious diet, according to the same study.

Live With Purpose and Be Part of a Community

Noto highlights a social component of longevity. Research suggests that individuals who have friends and a sense of community tend to live longer than those who are lonely or isolated.

“A lot of these studies have shown that people who have purpose, especially purpose greater than themselves, not only live longer, but they live happier lives and more successful lives,” said Noto. “So purpose is something we found to be extremely important.”

Noto points out that those in blue zones tend to place family and faith as a high priority in their culture.

    Manage Stress

Noto said that all those with longer lifespans had some way to deal with stress in their regular routines, whether it was socializing with friends, taking walks, praying, or working around the house.

    Be Conscientious

The Longevity Project, which began in the 1920s, followed 1,500 Americans with high IQs from childhood to death. Initially, it was thought that because these children were intelligent, they would succeed and do well in life, but that was not the case.

The study showed that the more conscientious a person was, the longer they lived. Character qualities such as discipline, hard work, organization, thoughtful decisions, and a sense of responsibility greatly influences success in life.

    Get Quality Sleep

Sleep impacts the length of a person’s life. Getting enough REM sleep is crucial to adding years to your life.

Noto recommends getting a sleep-tracking device to ensure you get the proper sleep quality. Those who suffer from chronic anxiety or sleep apnea were shown to have shorter lifespans. However, he also emphasizes the body’s ability to do amazing things, even under stress. He believes that having a sense of purpose helps through times of stress or low sleep, and significantly impacts a person’s health and life.

These Are The States With The Highest Freeway Fatalities

A recent study by Ladah Injury & Car Accident Lawyers, a Las Vegas-based personal injury firm, sheds light on which U.S. states have the highest rates of fatal crashes on interstates and freeways. Drawing on crash statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s CDAN portal, the study reviewed data from 2019 to 2023 and ranked states based on the number of fatal freeway crashes per 100,000 residents.

Wyoming emerged as the state with the highest rate. With 5.4 fatal freeway crashes per 100,000 people, the state’s rate is nearly three times the national average of 1.9. Between 2019 and 2023, Wyoming averaged 31.6 fatal incidents annually. The worst year was 2023, which saw 42 fatalities, while the lowest number was 21 in 2021.

Coming in second was New Mexico, which recorded 4.3 fatal crashes per 100,000 residents—more than double the national average. The state averaged 91 fatal freeway crashes each year over the five-year period, peaking at 103 in 2023.

Missouri ranked third with a rate of 3.2 fatal crashes per 100,000 people. The state saw nearly 199 such incidents annually during the study period, with the highest number recorded in 2022 at 227 and the lowest in 2023 with 187.

Arkansas followed in fourth place, reporting 3.1 fatal freeway crashes per 100,000 people. It averaged just over 95 deadly incidents each year. The highest total came in 2023 with 107 crashes, and the lowest was in 2019 with 69.

Montana rounded out the top five. The state saw 2.92 fatal crashes per 100,000 residents, well above the national average. Over five years, Montana averaged 32 fatal incidents annually, with 2021 marking its highest year at 47 crashes.

Other states in the top ten included Mississippi, Alaska, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Texas—all with crash rates significantly above the national norm. Mississippi, for example, logged 2.89 fatal crashes per 100,000 people, while Texas, despite its much larger population, still had a high rate at 2.6.

A spokesperson for Ladah Law Firm pointed to several likely causes behind the high fatality rates: long stretches of rural highway, higher speed limits, and reduced visibility in remote areas.

“States like Wyoming, New Mexico, and Missouri consistently see alarmingly high rates of interstate freeway crashes,” the spokesperson said. “Factors such as long rural stretches, high-speed travel, and limited visibility often create dangerous driving conditions that put lives at risk every day.”

They also emphasized the human cost behind the numbers.

“Behind each of these incidents is a family changed forever — victims facing life-altering injuries or grieving unimaginable loss.”

The law firm called on policymakers to take concrete steps, recommending a stronger highway patrol presence, improved road lighting and signage, and the use of technology to monitor high-risk zones. Public education on speed control and defensive driving was also highlighted as a critical need.

“It’s time for decisive, proactive measures that prioritize lives over speed,” the spokesperson added.

Unmasking The Real Threat To America's Democracy

Authored by Joseph C. Newtz via American Thinker,

America isn't a democracy but a constitutional republic designed to limit majority rule and protect individual rights. This distortion enables narratives that label dissent as dangerous, especially in portraying Trump as a "threat to democracy" -- a claim pushed by institutions caught spreading falsehoods about him. What appears as consensus is actually assigned opinion enforced by media and political power, as "conspiracy theories" used to silence dissent are proving to be true.

What follows is not just a list of lies -- it’s a pattern of systemic deception that reveals where the real threat lies.

The Concealment of President Biden’s Cognitive Decline: A Betrayal of Voters

For years, concerns about Joe Biden’s mental acuity were dismissed as partisan attacks or “conspiracy theories.” The White House physician declared him fit for office. Staffers claimed he “ran circles around them.” Meanwhile, public appearances were tightly controlled, questions were pre-approved, and scripted answers were passed off as spontaneous.

But in 2024, the dam broke. Biden’s debate performance made his decline undeniable. Millions had already cast primary ballots for a man clearly unfit to serve -- yet instead of outrage over the scale of the deception, voters watched passively as Kamala Harris stepped in as the de facto candidate.

It was an unconstitutional transfer of candidacy that the media refused to acknowledge. This wasn’t spin -- it was a deliberate, coordinated effort to deceive the American public about who was actually running the country.

All while, the same media complex screamed that Trump was the dictator.

If truth and transparency are foundational to democracy, then this widespread concealment -- and the resulting erosion of informed consent -- should outrage every American who values honest governance.

    COVID-19: From "Conspiracy" to Consensus

When Trump suggested the virus originated in a lab, the idea was branded "xenophobic" and "debunked." Today, both the CIA and FBI assess a lab leak as probable. This pattern repeated across masks, school closures, natural immunity, and vaccine efficacy.

The CDC quietly redefined "vaccine" to accommodate products that didn't stop transmission, contradicting officials' earlier claims. Education leaders denied coordinating with teachers unions on prolonged school closures despite evidence proving otherwise, devastating children's mental health and education.

Throughout, Trump was vilified as "anti-science" for questioning narratives that later collapsed -- demonstrating how the "threat to democracy" label silences legitimate dissent.

    Border Security: Denial Amid Crisis

While Trump was called xenophobic for demanding border security, his policies effectively curbed illegal crossings without new legislation. In contrast, Biden officials dismantled these effective policies while insisting only Congress could solve the problem.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told Congress the administration had "operational control" of the border -- while record-breaking illegal entries, overwhelmed facilities, and surging cartel activity told a very different story.

They claimed to be addressing the “root causes” of migration, yet crossings exploded to historic levels. They blamed Trump’s policies as inhumane while ignoring the actual consequences of their own: trafficking increased, fentanyl poured into American communities, and untold lives were lost in the chaos.

Common sense was discarded. Hatred for Trump outweighed concern for national security and human suffering. While illegal immigrants were given free housing, food, and healthcare, American veterans went neglected, seniors faced rising medical costs, and cities buckled under homelessness and resource strain.

These are not partisan talking points -- they are 90/10 issues that should unify Americans regardless of party. But the public was instead gaslit into believing that caring about your own country’s sovereignty is xenophobic or cruel.

The Russia Investigation and Intelligence Abuses

The Trump-Russia narrative -- foundation for claims that Trump threatened democracy -- collapsed when Mueller found no evidence of conspiracy. Later revelations proved more damning: FBI lawyer Clinesmith falsified evidence for a FISA warrant; the Steele dossier contained deliberately false information paid for by Trump's opponents; exculpatory evidence in the Michael Flynn case was concealed.

The great irony here is staggering: while Trump was accused of being a threat to democratic institutions, those very institutions were being weaponized against him in unprecedented ways. The real undermining of democratic norms came not from Trump, but from those who claimed to be defending democracy against him.

    Media Collusion and Information Control

Today's media no longer informs -- it enforces. The New York Post was banned for reporting verified facts about Hunter Biden. Trump's "very fine people" comment was maliciously edited to hide his explicit condemnation of neo-Nazis. His reference to a new technique for sterilizing blood was twisted into a narrative that he told people to "inject bleach."

These aren't mistakes but engineered falsehoods meant to dehumanize political opponents. In a genuine democracy, media checks power; instead, American media has become a propaganda arm defending institutional power while demonizing challengers.

    Government Institutions as Political Weapons

Government institutions have been weaponized for political ends while accusing Trump of authoritarianism. Under Obama, the IRS targeted conservative groups. The DoJ labeled concerned parents at school board meetings as potential terrorists. Security clearances and FISA warrants were politically manipulated.

Classified document cases reveal a two-tiered justice system: aggressive prosecution for Trump versus leniency for Biden and Clinton. January 6th defendants faced harsh treatment compared to 2020 rioters who caused far more destruction.

Federal agencies have colluded with social media to suppress dissent -- raising serious First Amendment concerns. The January 6th Committee's selective editing of evidence and exclusion of exculpatory information about Trump exemplifies how "defending democracy" shields undemocratic behavior.

The Inversion of Reality: Who Truly Threatens Democracy?

Logic dictates a simple conclusion: if nearly every major anti-Trump narrative -- from Russian collusion to COVID origins to Biden’s cognitive health -- has collapsed under scrutiny, what basis remains for believing Trump threatens democracy?

The aftermath is equally clear: if the institutions aligned against him -- intelligence agencies, media conglomerates, and political operatives -- have repeatedly misled the public, their credibility to define “danger” is null. The louder they sound the alarm, the more they reveal about themselves: suppressing information, weaponizing government agencies, manipulating elections, and discarding due process when politically convenient.

And yet, instead of acknowledging the obvious, many Americans now defend manufactured narratives that make intelligent people sound irrational. Reasonable citizens abandon common sense -- not because the facts changed, but because the media relentlessly promulgates assigned opinions that demand emotional loyalty over objective thought. Issues that should unite 90% of the public -- like stopping child trafficking, securing borders, or caring for veterans -- become polarizing, not on principle, but because they’re associated with the “wrong” political figure.

    Restoring Sanity, Reclaiming Sovereignty

Democracy cannot function without informed citizens. And citizens cannot be informed when they are being systematically lied to -- by government agencies, media platforms, and political leaders who view the truth as a threat to power.

The real crisis in America isn’t Donald Trump. It’s the normalization of institutional lying, the abandonment of due process, and the transformation of journalism into narrative enforcement.

Until we reject assigned opinions and return to objective truth and transparency, we will remain ruled not by reason, but by illusion. Meanwhile, those who shout loudest about “threats to democracy” conceal their actions in shadows -- while figures like Trump operate in full view. If this inversion continues, “government by the people” will be reduced to a hollow phrase -- masking a system of manipulation, not representation.

The time has come for Americans across the political spectrum to acknowledge the pattern of deception and demand better. Our constitutional republic depends on it.

Nuclear Stocks Soar After Report Trump To Sign Order Streamlining Reactor Approvals

President Donald Trump is expected to sign executive orders as early as Friday to boost the nuclear energy industry by streamlining reactor approvals and reinforcing fuel supply chains, Reuters reported on Thursday afternoon.

Four sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that the forthcoming orders aim to simplify the regulatory process for approving new nuclear reactors and to strengthen nuclear fuel supply chains amid mounting concerns over U.S. dependence on foreign suppliers.

The news sent nuclear stocks soaring in the after hours session, with names like NuScale and Oklo up 13% and 17%, respectively.

As we noted less than a week ago, both names are moving forward with SMR permitting and plans. Sam Altman-backed Oklo says it is navigating what CEO Jacob DeWitte calls “good uncertainty” as potential Trump administration executive orders could accelerate Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) licensing, expand military and Department of Energy (DOE) nuclear roles, and boost U.S. nuclear fuel supply chains, according to UtilityDive.

On Oklo’s Q1 2025 earnings call, DeWitte confirmed the company is engaged in a “pre-application readiness assessment” with the NRC, aiming to smooth its formal license submission for a newly upsized 75-MW reactor design in Q4 2025. The company still targets late 2027 or early 2028 for first power production at its Idaho National Laboratory (INL) site.

DeWitte noted the recent departure of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman as Oklo board chair removes a potential conflict of interest should OpenAI become a future power customer. Oklo already holds about 14 GW in nonbinding agreements with data centers and industrial operators.

The White House is weighing four nuclear-related executive orders, including directives to overhaul NRC licensing with an 18-month deadline for new applications, reconsider radiation exposure limits, and authorize military and DOE property for reactor deployments—potentially bypassing standard NRC approvals.

These efforts aim to boost U.S. nuclear capacity to 400 GW by 2050, up from about 100 GW today. While the NRC is already implementing changes from last year’s ADVANCE Act, further reforms could shorten Oklo’s expected 24- to 30-month licensing timeline.

The UtilityDive report says that Zero Hedge favorite Oklo is also among eight companies eligible for the military’s Advanced Nuclear Power for Installations program, enabling on-base reactor deployments. It’s developing nuclear fuel fabrication facilities capable of reusing spent fuel that would otherwise sit in long-term storage.

Meanwhile, as we noted on X this evening, OKLO is now up 9x since Jim Cramer said "I can't even look at it" back in October 2024.

Supreme Court Reinstates Maine Lawmaker Suspended Over Transgender Sports Policy

Authored by Matthew Vadum via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours),

The U.S. Supreme Court on May 20 reinstated a Maine state lawmaker’s speaking and voting privileges that had been suspended over her criticism of males participating in girls’ high school sports.

Maine State Rep. Laurel Libby (R-Auburn), speaks with a colleague at the State House in Augusta on Feb. 14, 2023. Robert F. Bukaty/AP File

In March, the speaker of the Maine House of Representatives barred Maine Rep. Laurel Libby, a Republican, from speaking or voting on the House floor until she recanted her views on Maine’s policy allowing transgender participation in school sports, according to the lawmaker’s application filed with the court.

On May 20, the Supreme Court granted Libby’s request for an injunction blocking the House policy as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit considers the case. The unsigned order did not provide reasons for the decision.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor indicated she would deny the application. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson filed a dissent from the granting of the application.

A federal district court previously denied Libby’s application for a preliminary injunction, finding legislative immunity prevented the court from acting because the speaker’s “sanction” was a “legislative act” and the disenfranchisement of the voters in Libby’s legislative district was not so “extraordinary” as to override immunity.

Libby appealed to the First Circuit, which also declined to block the House policy.

In her April 28 application to the Supreme Court, Libby challenged the speaker’s decision to suspend her privileges as a lawmaker.

The verbal censure (unwise as it may be) is not what Applicants challenge here. It’s what happened next.

“The Speaker declared Libby was barred from speaking or voting until she recants her view. This means her thousands of constituents in Maine House District 90 are now without a voice or vote for every bill coming to the House floor for the rest of her elected term, which runs through 2026.

“The ongoing and indefinite denial of Libby’s voting rights is unprecedented,” the application said, adding that the U.S. House of Representatives found long ago that the Constitution forbids that chamber from preventing one of its members from voting.

“The member’s vote is not her own; it belongs to her district. And depriving an entire district of representation is no more constitutional than excluding that district from a redistricting plan in the first place. … The same rules apply in Maine.”

On May 8, Maine’s House Speaker Ryan Fecteau, a Democrat, filed a brief urging the Supreme Court not to take up the case.

The brief said that on Feb. 17, Libby “targeted” a high school student who had competed in an event “because that student is transgender,” and identified that student by name. The post, written on her official Facebook account, “quickly went viral,” according to the brief.

Fecteau said he saw the post and “was immediately concerned about the student’s safety and welfare” and sent a letter to Libby, urging her to delete the post. Libby declined.

The Maine House passed a resolution with a vote of 75 to 70, requiring Libby to “accept full responsibility for the incident and publicly apologize to the House and to the people and the State of Maine,” the brief said.

Like other censures of Maine House members, the censure resolution required Rep. Libby to apologize for her conduct—not recant her views.

Libby declined to apologize, the brief noted. Fecteau determined that Libby had violated House rules and ruled she could not participate in floor debates and floor votes until she apologized.

The speaker said that Libby “retains all other legislative privileges and continues to enjoy considerable means to advance and oppose legislation and otherwise represent her constituents,” despite those restrictions.

In her dissent, Justice Jackson wrote that Libby’s application isn’t an emergency and fails to meet the “high bar” imposed by the federal All Writs Act, which gives the Supreme Court authority to issue injunctions. She said that the First Circuit is “moving quickly to evaluate the legal issues this case presents,” and oral argument is scheduled for the coming weeks.

Libby has failed to show that her right to the relief she requested is “indisputably clear,” Jackson wrote, citing a legal precedent.

This leaves “many difficult questions,” such as whether there are limits to state legislatures’ power to bind lawmakers to ethics rules, and whether federal courts may determine if those rules are improper, Jackson wrote.

For example, “Does it violate a representative’s First Amendment rights to be subject to sanction under such rules, and does it make a difference what the sanction is?”

“This Court has neither addressed nor answered most of these questions,” Jackson wrote.

A Look At The New Surgeon General

Authored by Jeffrey Folks via American Thinker,

Not long ago, U.S. health secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. defended Trump’s nomination of Casey Means as surgeon general.  In his nomination remarks, Trump wrote that Means would “work closely” with Kennedy “to ensure a successful implementation of our Agenda in order to reverse the Chronic Disease Epidemic, and ensure Great Health, in the future, for ALL Americans.”

Trained as a head and neck surgeon, Casey Means abandoned her career in surgery to become a prominent “wellness” influencer.  Like RFK Jr., Means promotes preventive and alternative medicine that might result in fewer surgeries and other invasive treatments.  She practices “functional medicine” and is not board certified in a medical specialty.  No wonder her nomination has been attacked by professional groups associated with surgeons and other members of the medical establishment.

Means has promoted what some see as “controversial” ideas, such as removing ultra-processed foods in school lunches and replacing them with unprocessed foods, especially fresh fruits and vegetables.  This might seem like common sense, but it threatens a food industry that is focused on processed meat, dairy, and other foods and that employs powerful lobbies to maintain sales.

There is also her view that glucose “as a molecule has caused more destruction of the human mind and body than any other substance in human history.”  Like RFK Jr., Means supports food warnings and possibly outright bans on high-sugar foods.

During the Sep. 27, 2024, Roundtable Discussion of Children’s Health: A Second Opinion, Means joined Sen. Ron Johnson, RFK Jr., and a dozen experts in a discussion of preventive options for children’s health.  At the roundtable, Dr. Means stated that “if the current trends continue ... at best, we’re going to face profound societal instability and decreased American competitiveness, and at worst, we’re going to be looking at a genocidal level health collapse.”

A full four-hour video of the roundtable is available online and is well worth watching for what it says about America’s health care crisis and about the views of RFK Jr. and Casey Means.  Several panelists referred to the “corruption” and economic self-interest of food and health care systems that, in their opinion, are making Americans chronically ill.  As Means stated, every segment of the current “health care” system “makes more money when we are sick.”  It is not a matter of degree, one panelist stated, but of “black and white ... good and evil.”  According RFK Jr., if a foreign country did these things to us — the poisoning of our food supply and corruption of our health care system — “it would be considered an act of war.”

A crucial point is that President Trump himself stands behind, and in fact set in motion via his appointment of RFK Jr., Means and others in this effort to transform America’s health.  More than anyone, it is Trump who is spearheading the effort to transform health care and diet, as well as to lower the cost of prescription drugs and other medical costs.  One recalls that in his first term, Trump passed the “Right to Try” legislation that has opened ongoing clinical trials to those willing to pay for them.

Many persons associated with the medical establishment might label Means and RFK Jr. as radicals because of their intention to fundamentally transform American health.  This transformation involves many elements, but at its heart, it is a change of approach among physicians away from treating symptoms to promoting wellness.  Along with this, there would be major changes in diet and exercise.

Whether Kennedy and Means are radicals is, of course, a matter of opinion.  But no one can deny that, despite spending more per capita than any other country in the world, the U.S. has one of the highest levels of chronic and acute disease.  This is a problem that must be addressed either by government or by individual choice.

The rate of adult obesity in the U.S. stands at 40% and it is rising.  Three fourths of U.S. adults have at least one serious marker of disease — high blood sugar, high blood pressure, obesity or overweight, heart disease, arthritis, and others.  We are not a well nation.  Just recently I sat outside a local grocery for 30 minutes (waiting on my wife) and observed that a majority of shoppers coming out, their carts piled with Mothers’ Day foods and presents, were either overweight or obese.  This is not natural, and it is not the way most of us want it to be.  But as many commentators have written, we live in an unhealthy environment that deliberately promotes unhealthy choices.

This is not to say that individual choice plays no role in our predicament.  Pizza is the most popular food in America, and this choice is not forced on us.  Hamburgers, often loaded with cheese and extra meat patties, are second — again, not because of a conspiracy on the part of the medical establishment, but because they are quick, filling, and tasty.  To really change American health, it would be necessary to shift eating patterns from pizza and burgers.  Only three percent of Americans consistently eat whole plant-based foods at present.

Many critics believe that these changes are too extreme and that the chances of bringing them about are slim.  But health advocates have pointed out that as late as the 1980s, a majority of Americans still smoked on a regular basis, and now that figure stands at 14%.  Change in health habits is possible if driven by public education and social and economic pressure.  The price of a pack of cigarettes has risen from about 30 cents in 1960 to six dollars today, a result mostly of higher taxation and litigation designed to restrict consumption.  A similar program of education and taxation could be applied to sugary foods and drinks.

“Transformation” is difficult to achieve, as I fear Kennedy and Means will find out.  But incremental changes are possible, and I believe they should be implemented.  As a conservative, I believe that healthy choices are a matter of individual choice, but it is a fact that government policy toward reducing smoking has saved an estimated 8 million lives, 3.5 million of them from lung cancer.  Even minor changes to food and medical systems will, I believe, save an equal number of lives.  It is right to ban artificial food dyes.  It is right to educate the public about the harm of excessive sugar.  It is right to promote consumption of more natural foods.

As with the appointment of RFK Jr., Trump’s nomination of Casey Means as U.S. surgeon general is a shot across the bow of America’s health care system and the food and drink industry.  Trump campaigned on making America “healthy again.”  There is a crisis, and every American is affected in some way — if not directly by disease, then by the burden of health care spending.  Trump’s appointment of RFK Jr. and his nomination of Casey Means are steps in the right direction.

North Carolina Communities Rising From The Ruins Of Hurricane Helene

Authored by Allan Stein via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours),

CHIMNEY ROCK, N.C.—North Carolina officials estimate that it will take many years, many hands, and up to $60 billion to recover from the widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in late September 2024.

    Allan Stein/The Epoch Times

In the historic village of Chimney Rock, located in the western part of the state, a dedicated army of volunteers has been providing much-needed assistance to the recovery effort at no cost.

It hasn’t required much funding,” Shane Zoccole, founder and director of the South Carolina-based disaster relief nonprofit Spokes of Hope, said.

Zoccole told The Epoch Times that the recovery effort in Chimney Rock is primarily driven by volunteers.

Chimney Rock is essential to the valley—it’s the commerce of this area,“ he said. ”We felt led to help the businesses, to help the people here, and to get this town to stay on the map instead of going off the map.

Since October 2024, Zoccole has led more than 2,000 volunteers from various nonprofits willing to help without compensation.

Among the volunteers are hundreds of Amish and Mennonite people from Ohio and Pennsylvania who are ready to go the distance, he said.

We eat breakfast by 8 a.m., work orders go out, we’re working by 8:30, and then we work until just about 6 p.m., when dinner is served,” Zoccole said.

“It’s been all the moving parts connecting with local business owners and volunteers across the nation.”

He said it has been a collaborative effort since the hurricane made a lasting impact on the landscape eight months ago.

Zoccole founded Spokes of Hope in 2018 after Hurricane Florence caused nine deaths and resulted in $2 billion in damages across South Carolina.

However, that was dwarfed by the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene, he said.

Much of Chimney Rock, a village in western North Carolina’s Hickory Nut Gorge on the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains, was either damaged, destroyed, or buried under several feet of mud.

The bridge over the Rocky Broad River, leading to the state park near the village, collapsed in the rising floodwaters, which reached a height of 20 feet.

The ferocious wind, powerful currents, and heavy rain swept away several businesses along the river. All that remained were the concrete foundations.

Near the Bat Cave residential area, a ticket booth remained on its side, while the stately homes further upriver lay in ruins or exhibited heavy damage. Many homes that survived the torrent were no longer safe for habitation.

“Still here, still standing,” read a sign on a house that remained livable.

(Bottom) A house that withstood Hurricane Helene displays a sign of hope in Chimney Rock Village, N.C., on May 6, 2025. Allan Stein/The Epoch Times

Confronted with such devastation, Zoccole’s initial reaction was that using a bulldozer to clear the wreckage would be a more effective solution than implementing a reconstruction plan for the village.

Nonetheless, Zoccole and his relief volunteers refused to give up on the community.

We have to go to the finish,” he said.

If we don’t finish something that we’ve started, then we’ve [basically] told these people we’re only here part-time for you. We’re only here to help you a little bit.

Members of the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division arrived in early October 2024, armed with buckets and shovels to clear the knee-deep mud and allow other volunteers to begin repairs.

By early May, volunteers had removed tons of silt and debris from the water-damaged shops. They rebuilt several of them to code using donated and repurposed materials and equipment.

Although many shops remain closed for repairs, Chimney Rock Village no longer bears the worst scars from the hurricane.

Zoccole noted that considerable work remains, as the village business center plans to reopen this summer, possibly in June.

“Our success is in our unity. We’ve been able to pull together ahead of schedule,” he said.

    A Storm Like No Other

Chimney Rock Village, located in Rutherford County, has a rural population of about 140 residents. It is one of the 39 counties in North Carolina designated as a critical disaster area following Hurricane Helene.

The hurricane struck Florida with winds of 140 mph on Sept. 26, 2024, before moving into North Carolina the next morning and causing severe rain, flooding, and deadly landslides across much of the western third of the state.

In certain regions, rainfall accumulation reached as much as 30 inches. The storm caused damage to, or destroyed, more than 73,000 homes, roads, and bridges across 6,900 sites, including the heavily trafficked Interstate 40.

The storm claimed more than 100 lives across the state and directly caused 176 deaths across the southeastern region, with seven residents still unaccounted for in North Carolina, according to federal government data.

One resident of Chimney Rock Village lost her life during the storm, which was deemed the worst since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

According to a revised North Carolina Office of State Budget and Management assessment, the estimated multi-year recovery costs are nearly $60 billion.

The report estimates the storm’s total economic impact at more than $16 billion, which includes $3 billion in direct damages to businesses, and more than $12 billion in lost revenue, excluding wages and income.

Then-North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper requested $3.9 billion from the General Assembly to support struggling communities. Of this total, $1.2 billion has already been allocated, with an additional $225 million set aside in reserve.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has designated $850 million for this initiative, which includes the deployment of 8,500 personnel for emergency response.

    ‘Nothing but Mud’

Erica Stafford, 40, is the head chef and kitchen manager at Lured Market and Grill near Lake Lure and Chimney Rock.

She said she has witnessed powerful storms and the death and economic havoc they leave behind, but Helene seemed to be far worse.

“Nobody expected it to be what it was,” Stafford said. “Even living here, I thought, ‘Well, there’ll be some flooding. We’re going to have a tree down. We’re going to be out of power.’ Nobody expected the amount of damage done.

“It was such a mess. I got down here, and it was nothing but mud.”

Shielding Your Golden Years: A Retiree's Essential Guide To Avoiding Scams And Fraud

Authored by John Rampton Via The Epoch Times,

Who doesn’t look forward to retirement? After all, it’s a much-deserved break after decades of work. During this time, you can travel, enjoy hobbies, and spend quality time with loved ones. Unfortunately, scammers tend to strike during this time as well. Due to their savings, home ownership, and perhaps less familiarity with digital threats, retirees are prime targets for financial fraud.

    TetianaKtv/Shutterstock

In 2023 alone, Americans over the age of 60 lost more than $3.4 billion to scams. Furthermore, despite fraud being underreported, older victims who file complaints often report higher losses than younger victims. Specifically, scams resulted in $1,450 for those 80 or older, compared with less than $500 for those 20 to 59.

Suffice it to say, this should be a wake-up call. The good news? Your best defense is awareness. This post will explain how to protect yourself and your financial future from common retirement scams.

Understanding the Predator’s Mindset: Why Retirees Are Targeted

To understand the underlying reasons why older adults are often the targets of common scams, it is imperative to understand the following:

    • Accumulated wealth. Often, retirees have substantial assets like retirement accounts, pensions, and home equity, making them attractive targets for financial gain.
    • Lower technological familiarity. Many retirees may not be familiar with sophisticated online threats, like phishing emails, website spoofing, and other forms of fraud, making them more susceptible to deception.
    • A more trusting nature. Older adults may have grown up when trust was more readily given. Consequently, they may be less inclined to question seemingly authoritative figures or strangers who seem overly friendly.
    • Social isolation and loneliness. It is common for scammers to prey on feelings of loneliness and isolation, especially in those who have lost their spouses or have limited social interaction. Ultimately, they exploit their victims by cultivating false friendships or romantic relationships.

Recognizing these inherent risk factors is crucial to enhancing retirees’ and their loved ones’ protection from financial abuse.

Unmasking the Deception: Common Retirement Scams and Their Tactics

Now, let’s examine some of the most common scams targeting retirees, dissecting how they work and the telltale signs to watch out for.

Imposter Scams: Authority Scams (IRS, Medicare, or Social Security)

During this scam, unsolicited calls will be received from individuals who impersonate official government agencies such as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Medicare, or Social Security Administration. Typically, scammers claim you owe back taxes, have problems with your Medicare coverage, or are about to lose your Social Security benefits. Often, they threaten arrest, legal action, or immediate suspension of benefits if you do not act immediately.

    • Red flags. A red flag might include threats of immediate arrest, demands for payment through unconventional and untraceable methods like gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency, and a false sense of urgency.
    • How to protect yourself. No legitimate government agency will demand payment over the phone, especially in unconventional ways. When you receive such a call, call the agency directly. Never provide your Social Security or Medicare number if you did not initiate the call.

Tech Support Scams: The Digital Distress Call

It typically starts with a pop-up message that says, “Warning! Your computer has been infected! Call this number right away!” You may also receive an unsolicited call from someone pretending to represent a well-known tech company such as Microsoft or Apple, offering to “remotely fix” a problem you do not have.

    • Red flags. Unexpected popups that ask you to call a specific number, unsolicited phone calls about alleged computer problems, and requests for remote access to your computer.
    • How to protect yourself. If you receive an unsolicited tech support offer, do not trust it. In case of a pop-up that appears suspicious, do not call the number displayed. Also, you should never grant remote access to anyone who contacts you unexpectedly. Further, ensure you have reputable antivirus software installed and that your operating system and applications are up-to-date. Whenever you need technical assistance, contact a trusted and verified company yourself.

The Grandparent Scam: Exploiting Familial Love

The grandparent scam manipulates older adults by exploiting their emotional bonds through urgency and fear. Typically, this begins with a vague call—“Hi Grandma, do you know who this is?”—inviting the grandparent to guess. When a name is offered, the scammer pretends to be the grandchild in crisis, asking for money to pay for car trouble, rent, medical expenses, or bail.

The scammer often asks the grandparent not to tell anyone else, adding emotional pressure. In more elaborate schemes, a second caller calls pretending to be an authority figure, like a police officer or doctor. Due to AI, scammers can now clone authentic voices to make their impersonations more convincing.

Usually, they request payment through untraceable methods like wire transfers or gift cards. Rarely but alarmingly, scammers send couriers to collect cash.

    • Red flags. A stranger pretending to be a grandchild, urgent requests for money, secrecy, muffled or off-sounding voices, and demands for untraceable payments.
    • How to protect yourself. When telling a story to your grandchild or a family member, you should always pause and verify the story. You should never send money to someone until you have verified their identity. Never trust anyone who insists on secrecy or a fast turnaround.

Romance Scams: The Illusion of Love and Connection

Typically, this scam is perpetrated online, via dating websites or social media. During the scam, the scammer establishes a romantic relationship with the victim, showering them with affection and declarations of love. When they have gained the victim’s trust and established an emotional connection, they will inevitably ask for money, often claiming a sudden medical crisis, a promising but urgent business investment, or a plane ticket to a destination.

    • Red flags. Oftentimes, the individual avoids meeting in person or engaging in video calls, and their stories often contain inconsistencies or change frequently.
    • How to protect yourself. Whenever you interact with individuals online, exercise extreme caution. Be wary of people who express their feelings too quickly. Never send them money or share your financial information if you haven’t met the person in person. If unsure, talk to a trusted friend or family member who can provide an objective perspective on the relationship. You can also check their profile pictures for stolen identity by performing a reverse image search.

Investment and Retirement Account Scams: The Siren Song of Guaranteed Riches

These schemes involve scammers posing as legitimate financial advisors or brokers and offering unrealistically high returns. Sometimes, investors might be pushed to make quick decisions or invest in obscure or unregistered securities.

    • Red flags. Frequently use high-pressure sales tactics, promise high profits with no associated risk, lack proper documentation or registration, and refuse to provide verified credentials.
    • How to protect yourself. Before entrusting your money to any financial advisor or broker, thoroughly research. You can verify their credentials and disciplinary history through FINRA’s BrokerCheck or the SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD) website. Also, do not rush into investing decisions based on pressure or unrealistic promises. Never give access to your account to anyone you do not know well and do not trust implicitly.

Financial Services Scam: The Illusion of Legitimacy

A financial services scam mimics the behavior of a genuine financial institution, such as a bank or loan company. It is common for fraudsters to use phone calls, texts, or emails that appear and sound authentic. It is possible for them to claim your account was compromised or to offer fake services such as better loan rates. You might even be threatened with arrest if you do not pay your medical bills.

Scammers can appear convincingly legitimate with spoofed caller IDs and near-identical email addresses. Under the guise of security or assistance, they will ask you for sensitive information, such as passwords, Social Security numbers, or payment via peer-to-peer (P2P) apps.

    • Red flags. There will be unexpected communication about account issues or offers, pressure to act quickly, requests for sensitive data, suspicious links, and payment demands via P2P apps.
    • How to protect yourself. Personal or financial information shouldn’t be shared unless you initiated contact via a verified phone number or website. You should also avoid clicking links or opening attachments from unknown senders. Whenever in doubt, hang up and call your bank or lender directly.

Sweepstakes and Lottery Scams: The Phantom Prize

Scammers typically call, email, or mail you unexpectedly, claiming to have won a prize you didn’t even enter in a sweepstakes or lottery. You are, however, instructed to pay upfront fees or taxes to claim your supposed winnings.

    • Red flags. There are no records of you entering the contest or lottery; you are asked to wire money, purchase gift cards, or make other upfront payments to claim your prize, and there is no legitimate verification that you won.
    • How to protect yourself. Winners of legitimate sweepstakes and lotteries will never have to pay upfront fees or taxes to claim their prizes. If a prize sounds too good to be true, it is likely a scam. As such, you should never send money or provide financial information to claim a prize.

Business Impostor Scams: Exploiting Trust in Familiar Names

An imposter scam targets older adults by posing as a well-known company or charity representative. Scammers use fake caller IDs, emails, or websites to appear authentic. Their goal? Pretending to resolve an issue or confirm a transaction to steal money or information.

They might claim that your account is locked, your payment is late, or you won a prize. Some of these sites ask for gift cards or ask for sensitive information so that you can “verify” your identity. People often comply without suspicion because they impersonate familiar names like Amazon, PayPal, local utilities, or national charities.

    • Red flags. You may receive unsolicited messages from companies or charities, urgent demands for payment or donations, gift card payments, and personal information requests.
    • How to protect yourself. Never trust a familiar name without verifying it independently. For confirmation, call the company’s official number or visit their official website. If you receive an unexpected or high-pressure communication, do not give out any personal information or send money, no matter how convincing it may seem.

Proactive Measures: Smart Ways to Protect Yourself and Your Money

Besides recognizing red flags of specific scams, you can also enhance your security by adopting these proactive habits:

    • Guard your personal information. Shred any documents containing sensitive data before discarding them. Unless you initiated the contact and are certain of the recipient’s legitimacy, you should never share your Social Security number, bank account details, credit card information, or passwords.
    • Employ strong passwords and two-factor authentication. Keep your online accounts secure by using unique, complex passwords. If two-factor authentication is available, enable it, as it adds another layer of security beyond your password. If you have many passwords to manage, consider using a reputable password manager.
    • Monitor your accounts diligently. Check your bank and credit card statements carefully each month for unauthorized transactions. If you notice unusual transactions or withdrawals, set up account alerts through your financial institution. For identity theft protection, obtain and review your credit report annually with AnnualCreditReport.com.
    • Communicate openly with trusted individuals. If you notice any suspicious activity, feel free to discuss financial matters with trusted family members, friends, or your financial advisor. A second opinion can often help identify scams. When considering a significant financial decision, talk to a trusted friend or family member about it thoroughly.
    • Stay informed and educated. Follow updates from reputable organizations like the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to stay up-to-date on scam trends and fraud prevention tips. Participate in local seminars or webinars to increase your knowledge of elder fraud protection. Whenever you doubt the legitimacy of something, always ask questions and verify the information.

Taking Action: What to Do if You’ve Been Targeted by a Scam

Unfortunately, even the most vigilant individuals can fall victim to sophisticated scams. If you believe you have been targeted or have fallen for a scam, remember that you are not alone and that swift action is imperative.

    • Cease all communication. You should immediately cease all communication with the suspected scammer. Do not answer any further calls, messages, or emails.
    • Report the incident. The following authorities should be notified: the Federal Trade Commission (FTC): ReportFraud.ftc.gov, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3):www.ic3.gov, and the AARP Fraud Watch Helpline: 877-908-3360. You can also contact your local police department, especially if you have suffered financial loss.
    • Contact your financial institutions. You should immediately freeze your bank account or credit card if you provided any details to the scammer.
    • Monitor your credit. To help prevent further identity theft, place a fraud alert or a credit freeze on your credit report.
    • Talk about your experience. In addition to providing emotional support, telling others about your scam experience can prevent others from falling prey to similar scams and reduce the stigma associated with scam victims.

    Final Thoughts

In retirement, you should feel peaceful and fulfilled, not stressed and concerned about your finances. Being vigilant, informed, and open to conversations about money will help you protect yourself from ever-evolving scams.

It is important to remember that legitimate organizations will never pressure you to make quick decisions, ask for sensitive information over the phone, or demand payment in untraceable forms like gift cards. If you’re unsure, pause, verify, and speak up.

It’s worth protecting because you’ve worked hard for your financial security.

    Author: Charles J. Chaput

Editor’s Note: On this Memorial Day weekend, we invite you to reread Archbishop Emeritus Charles Chaput’s 2021 essay on patriotism and the sacredness of being willing to die for something.

None of us is an independent agent surfing a private island in time. Each of us belongs to a much larger continent of human experiences stretching backward over centuries, experiences that situate us within a network of home, family, clan, tribe, friends, country, religion.

These things tug on our emotions. They demand our fidelity, and rightly so. In large measure, they make us who we are. They give us the context for our lives. When the poet Horace wrote his famous line Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori, “It is sweet and fitting to die for one’s homeland,” he put into words what the Roman people yearned to believe: that their struggle to survive and thrive in the ancient world had meaning.

When Spartan hoplites fought to the last man against a much larger Persian force at Thermopylae, they gave their lives defending their families, their city, and their Greek allies. And when Shakespeare wrote the words, “we few, we happy few, we band of brothers; for he today who sheds his blood with me shall be my brother,” and put them into the mouth of Henry V at the Battle of Agincourt, he touched one of the deepest chords of human loyalty. Cultures unable to inspire the ultimate sacrifice from their people for a commonly shared need or code have no future. They’re already dead without knowing it. So it has always been. And barring a miraculous change in human nature before Jesus returns, so it will always be.

Consider: In A.D. 778, rear elements of the army of Charlemagne were ambushed by Basque warriors and their Muslim masters. The engagement took place at Roncevaux Pass in the Pyrenees, near the border of what are now Spain and France. Over time, it passed into legend. In the mid-eleventh century, one thousand years ago, traveling minstrels began telling the story of a great Frankish warrior from the Roncevaux Pass battle. His name was Roland. The poem that bears his name, La Chanson de Roland (the Song of Roland), has many scenes. But the most famous recounts his heroic stand against a fierce and much larger enemy.

In the poem, Roland is revered by his king and loved by his men, for both his warrior prowess and his noble character. Thus he’s trusted with the crucial task of covering the rear of Charlemagne’s army of Franks. The army is retiring to rest in France after fighting in Spain against its Muslim conquerors. A resentful nobleman betrays him. The Muslim force learns that Roland’s men are vulnerable. They set a trap and attack. But Roland and his men, united in a brotherhood of arms, fight courageously. They ensure the safety of Charlemagne’s main body of men.

We no longer live in a warrior culture. The poem’s mix of slaughter and tender emotion can seem unsettling today, but we can still learn a great deal from the Song of Roland.

As the battle wears on, the size of the enemy force weighs against the valor of Roland and his men. In the end, enemy warriors overrun them. Only in the final moments does Roland blow his great horn Oliphant. The mountainsides echo with the sound. Charlemagne, alerted, returns to crush the enemy. But he arrives too late to save Roland and his men. They’ve given their lives, faithful to their duty.

The Song of Roland is one of the great epic poems of Western civilization. In my high school years in the 1950s, it was essential reading. The violence in the text is lavish and bloody. At one point, Roland cleaves an attacker in two. The havoc is matched only by the intense brotherhood of Roland and his men. When Roland surveys the field where so many of his friends lie slain, he weeps at the loss of those he loved. As his own death draws near, Roland turns his face toward his homeland. He thinks “of gentle France, of his kin and line; of his nursing father, King Karl benign.” His last thoughts turn to God, whom he begs to “shield my soul from its peril.” God answers his prayer by sending Gabriel the archangel to bear Roland’s soul to paradise.

We no longer live in a warrior culture. The poem’s mix of slaughter and tender emotion can seem unsettling today, but we can still learn a great deal from the Song of Roland. The poem’s great age takes nothing away from its timeless truths about the high dignity of loyalty to one’s comrades, a loyalty closely tied to patriotic devotion.

Roland and his men share a bond that unites them. Their bond is consecrated with a spirit of sacrifice. The Song of Roland bears the language of feudal oaths and duties. But these commitments don’t create the mutual loyalty of Roland and his men. Rather, and more accurately, the words and conventions of the warriors’ fealty express something already at work in their hearts, something deeper. It is “gentle France,” the ties of “kin and line,” and memories of what they’ve done together that seal the declarations of loyalty. Our loves and loyalties desire public and durable forms. We seek to celebrate the bonds that unite us. These bonds precede formal expressions of official ties. The impulse to recognize pre-existing bonds is the key impulse of civic life. We have nation-states because we have nations, not the other way around.

The Song of Roland captures an enduring truth about the human condition: The things we’re willing to die for are tied to what we hold as sacred. In fact, the willingness to die for something also consecrates it as sacred.

Many students who’ve gone through U.S. higher education in recent years have been taught to be skeptical of patriotism. A critical, and often poisonously cynical spirit has undermined a great deal of modern life, including the nation. At the same time, a naïve kind of globalist utopianism has grown. It promises a new solidarity transcending national borders. But it’s a “solidarity” as shallow as it is wide. A peculiar free-market ideology is married to this globalist dreaming. It asks us to see ourselves almost solely in economic terms. It reduces us to stateless, homeless consumers, not citizens.

We do need to be wary of excessive national pride. It has caused great harm in the modern era. A nation can become so corrupt and Babylon-like that it’s not worth defending, and America is no exception. We also need to remember that the nation-state, however happily we conceive it, is distinct from, and finally less important than, the purpose of our life in this world. Man’s purpose is to know and love God. We should never imagine our citizenship in any nation as sufficient. Our true and lasting commonwealth is in heaven, and therein lies our real citizenship (Phil 3:20).

Thus, in civic affairs, zealotry for one’s country can be a vice. But there’s also a vice called indifference.

Thus, in civic affairs, zealotry for one’s country can be a vice. But there’s also a vice called indifference. And today, in America, we suffer from a media-driven culture that feeds this indifference while simultaneously aggravating divisions. A distorted emphasis on diversity and multiculturalism at the expense of communion and unity discourages any particular loyalty to the nations that constitute the West.

These and other efforts to weaken our love for our native land dovetail with the acquisitive consumer spirit of our time. We’re encouraged to believe that real happiness comes from satisfying our personal desires. And the rapacious individualism that this nurtures is what will dominate the world if we one day live as post-national “global citizens.” That destiny would not be the unity of a universal brotherhood. It would be life in a managed, technocratic cocoon organized to promote consumption and self-invention.

Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori may be too sweeping a claim for many in the twenty-first century to accept, or even to understand. But we need a healthy patriotism. We need to entertain the possibility that love for our country might lead us to sacrifice greatly, even radically, in order to preserve the best that remains in it. That love is not an evil. It’s a source of liberation. It breaks the bonds of our addiction to lesser things. It leads us to stand as brothers, sisters, and friends with others. Fidelity to the good in our nation is not our final end. It doesn’t deliver us from sin and death. It doesn’t have an absolute claim on our souls. It doesn’t replace our hunger for heaven.

But it is a natural grace; a partial but real deliverance from the prison cell of a world without loyalties, and the confines of self-love.

    Honeymoon is over, Papa Leone.

It is an ontological impossibility for a woman to hold ecclesiastical office. Because the power of governance and jurisdiction flows through Holy Orders: Can. 129 §1. “Those who have received sacred orders are qualified, according to the norm of the prescripts of the law, for the power of governance, which exists in the Church by divine institution and is also called the power of jurisdiction.”

Since both Prevost and Sister Tiz have degrees in Canon Law, there is no question they know this. This is about inversion of reality. And the matter at hand is not just Canon Law, it is Divine Law, which no one can touch. It is unchangeable Dogma that Christ instituted the Church as a hierarchy, ruled through its Prelates, the successors of the Apostles.

It was widely speculated mere days ago that Prevost might remove the woman Prefect named by Bergoglio. Nope. He doubled down. So now priests are ruled by two um,chicks.

22 More People, Entities Charged In Arizona Medicaid Fraud Scheme

Authored by Bill Pan via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours),

An Arizona grand jury has indicted 22 individuals and entities linked to a massive Medicaid fraud scheme involving sober living homes.

The Arizona and American flags blow in the wind in Terra Vista, Ariz., on March 5, 2025. John Fredricks/The Epoch Times

The charges include money laundering, theft, conspiracy, fraudulent schemes, patient referral fraud, and forgery, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes announced Tuesday.

These indictments are part of an ongoing investigation into a $2.7 billion fraud that exploited Arizona’s health care system, particularly targeting Native Americans seeking treatment for drug and alcohol addiction.

According to the charge document, the 20 individuals indicted are associated with a church and a mental health organization called Happy House Behavioral Health. Prosecutors allege that Happy House was paid over $60 million for services that were either never rendered or only partially completed. Some of the billing, they say, was for clients who were deceased or incarcerated.

Prosecutors also allege that sober living facilities referred clients to Happy House, which in turn received funds from the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), the state’s Medicaid agency. Happy House then allegedly paid the referring sober homes for those client placements, an arrangement at the center of the fraudulent scheme charges.

Among the money laundering charges is a $5 million payment that Happy House allegedly made in July 2023 to Hope of Life International Church, which later transferred $2 million to an entity in Rwanda.

Lawyers representing Happy House and Hope of Life International Church could not be immediately reached for comments.

More than 100 individuals and multiple companies have so far been charged in cases cases tied to Arizona’s sweeping crackdown on Medicaid fraud and unlicensed sober living homes, many of which specifically targeted members of Native American tribes.

Starting around 2019, scammers lured individuals into fraudulent treatment programs by promising food, shelter, and addiction recovery services. Instead, they were placed in sober living homes where operators often allowed or even encouraged continued drug and alcohol use, according to state officials. Victims were often cut off from family contact, and in some cases held against their will, the charges allege.

Isolated by these organizations, people had to escape out of windows and jump over fences in the middle of the night just to access a phone to reach the outside world,” said Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs in 2023, during the announcement of a crackdown that suspended payments to 102 providers.

Meanwhile, the scammers overbilled the American Indian Health Program, a Medicaid plan for tribal members, for services that were never provided. AHCCCS said between 2019 and 2022, outpatient behavioral health claims surged from $53 million to $668 million.

In response to what Hobbs described as a humanitarian crisis, the state launched a $6 million grant in November 2024 to support tribal communities harmed by the scam.

In April, Hobbs signed a law tightening oversight of sober living homes. Under the new law, the Arizona Department of Health Services will establish standards for facilities to ensure a drug- and alcohol-free environment and promote recovery. The department will also have authority to suspend or revoke licenses, or fine violators up to $1,000 for each day a violation remains unaddressed.

At a minimum, the law requires the department to conduct annual inspections, track complaints, and report to lawmakers how many led to investigations or enforcement actions.

I consecrated my law practice, along with everything else in my life, to Our Blessed Mother long ago. She always helps, guides and protects me, despite my infidelity and ingratitude.

She showed up big for a family I represent today, and I thank her publicly.

Alasdair MacIntyre has died. His classic After Virtue had a tremendous effect on me when I was an undergrad and still in my atheist days, greatly reinforcing the attraction to Aristotelian ethics I had even then. (The spine of the light mauve cover of my copy, like that of pretty much any copy printed in the 80s, has long since turned green.)  It was, of course, part of a larger body of work which had a similarly great impact on so many people, in philosophy, theology, and beyond. RIP.

The family of Adriana Smith, a 30-year-old Georgia mother and nurse declared brain dead in February, is fighting to give her unborn son, named Chance, a opportunity at life.

Smith, who was eight weeks pregnant when she suffered a catastrophic brain injury due to undetected blood clots, remains on ventilators at Emory University Hospital Midtown, where doctors are working to sustain her baby at least until he reaches viability.

Smith’s mother, April Newkirk, shared an emotional update, noting that baby Chance is “doing better” with a strong heartbeat and developing limbs, offering hope amid their grief.

Newkirk told 11Alive that baby Chance “is actually doing better than the last time I met with the doctors. He has his legs, his toes, his limbs, heartbeat is good and strong…” — and they are hoping he survives. “The journey is for baby Chance to survive — and whatever condition God allows him to come here in, we’re going to love him just the same, and we’re gonna embrace him.”

The family, which includes Smith’s 7-year-old son, has embraced the chance to honor Adriana’s legacy through her unborn child, whom they see as a “second chance” for her life to continue. We want her life to continue through her children, Newkirk told reporters, emphasizing their desire to love and raise Chance, regardless of potential health challenges.

The case has sparked debate over Georgia’s Living Infants Fairness and Equality (LIFE) Act, which bans abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected, typically around six weeks. Because Smith is brain dead and no longer at risk herself, her medical team is legally required to maintain life support until the fetus reaches viability, a decision that initially left the family feeling powerless.

However, Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr clarified on May 16, 2025, that the LIFE Act does not mandate keeping a brain-dead woman on life support.

Removing life support is not an action with the purpose to terminate a pregnancy, Carr’s office stated, suggesting the hospital’s decision may stem from Georgia’s broader laws on withdrawing life support for pregnant patients, enacted in 2007. These laws, also present in states like Alaska and Colorado where abortion is legal, require life support to continue unless the baby is non-viable and the patient has an advance directive explicitly requesting withdrawal.

Pro-life advocates, including Monica Snyder of Secular Pro-Life, argue that Smith’s case reflects the importance of respecting a mother’s wishes.

“Adriana Smith wanted her baby,” Snyder wrote, noting that media and abortion advocates often overlook that some women would choose to protect their unborn child, even in such tragic circumstances. Snyder cited a study showing that in 35 similar cases of maternal brain death, 77% of babies were born alive, with 85% of those having normal outcomes by 20 months, underscoring the potential for positive outcomes.

The family’s ordeal began when Smith sought treatment for severe headaches at Northside Hospital in early February but was sent home with medication and no diagnostic tests. Newkirk believes a CT scan could have detected the clots and saved her daughter’s life.

The following day, Smith was found unresponsive, and a CT scan revealed multiple blood clots in her brain, leading to her being declared brain dead.

Now 22 weeks pregnant, Smith’s body is being sustained with nutrition and steroids to support Chance’s growth.

The family has set up a GoFundMe to help cover expenses and support Smith’s young son, calling for community prayers as they await Chance’s birth.

As the August delivery date approaches, the family remains hopeful, determined to give Adriana’s unborn son the chance she would have wanted.

A federal judge in Louisiana has struck down regulations that would have forced most U.S. employers to provide workers with time off and other accommodations to kill babies in abortions.

The ruling, issued Wednesday by U.S. District Judge David Joseph, invalidated a provision of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s (EEOC) regulations under the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA), which had been pushed during the Biden administration.

The PWFA, passed with bipartisan support in December 2022, was designed to ensure employers with 15 or more employees provide reasonable accommodations for pregnant workers, such as time off for medical appointments or relief from heavy lifting.

However, the EEOC’s 2024 rule, approved in a 3-2 vote along party lines, sparked outrage among pro-life lawmakers and groups by classifying abortion as a “related medical condition” to pregnancy and childbirth.

Pro-life advocates argued this overstepped the law’s intent, forcing employers to facilitate the termination of unborn lives against their moral or religious convictions.

Judge Joseph, appointed by President Donald Trump, ruled that the EEOC exceeded its authority, stating that Congress did not explicitly include abortion in the PWFA’s scope, especially given its “enormous social, religious, and political importance.” He sided with plaintiffs, including the attorneys general of Louisiana and Mississippi, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Catholic University, and two Catholic dioceses, who argued the rule violated state sovereignty and religious freedoms.

The ruling protects employers from being compelled to support abortions.

The vacated rule had required employers to grant time off for workers to obtain, prompting lawsuits from 17 states, including Tennessee and Arkansas, alongside pro-life organizations. Pro-life advocates, including the National Right to Life Committee, condemned the EEOC’s rule as an attempt to impose a “national abortion-accommodation mandate” under the guise of pregnancy protections.

While the abortion-related provision was struck down, the rest of the PWFA remains intact, ensuring accommodations for pregnancy-related needs like prenatal care. However, pro-life leaders see the ruling as a critical step in resisting federal overreach.

There's a crisis afoot in the global long-bond markets. Japan's is melting down, while the rest are under pressure. Adding fuel to the fire, the Trump administration threw in the towel on controlling US fiscal deficits and now says the plan is to instead "grow the economy."
