Vatican City – On May 19, 2025, the Holy See Press Office announced the appointment—made by Pope Leo XIV—of the new Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical John Paul II Theological Institute for Marriage and Family SciencesCardinal Baldassare ReinaVicar General of His Holiness for the Diocese of Rome and Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical Lateran University.

This is a significant development, marking a return to an established practice that aligns with the Institute’s identity—namely, that the Grand Chancellor is also the Pope’s Vicar for the Diocese of Rome, a role that already includes serving as Grand Chancellor of the Lateran University, where the Institute was originally founded.

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Cardinal Vicar of Rome Baldassare Reina as grand chancellor of the Pontifical John Paul II Theological Institute for the Sciences of Marriage and Family. The cardinal succeeds Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia who last April 21 turned 80. Locations on four continents
The Institute was founded with the Apostolic Letter in the form of Motu Proprio of Pope Francis Summa familiae cura on 8 September 2017, while on 11 July 2019 the then Congregation for Catholic Education approved its Statutes and the Plan of Studies.
The Theological Institute has a central headquarters in Rome, and seven foreign sections in the United States (Washington D.C.), Mexico (México D.F., Guadalajara and Monterrey), Spain (with two distinct locations, one in Valencia and the other in Madrid), Brazil (Salvador de Bahia), Benin (Cotonou), India (Changanacherry, Kerala) as well as associated Centers in Lebanon (Beirut), the Philippines (Bacolod) and the Dominican Republic (Santo Domingo).
Higher Education Center
It is the only higher education center entirely dedicated to theological studies and sciences on marriage and family, it collaborates with the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life to promote a common direction in studies on marriage, family and life, also through training courses and opportunities for exchange with the global network of family movements.
