The White House had sent the university a set of demands it said were aimed at curbing campus antisemitism only to backtrack later
A letter outlining sweeping demands on university admissions, hiring, and school curriculums, which the White House claims targeted antisemitism, was sent to Harvard University by mistake, the New York Times has cited senior US officials as saying.
The White House had emailed the Ivy League university an “updated and expanded list of demands” last Friday, following a wave of pro-Palestinian protests across US campuses. The message warned Harvard that it “must comply” in order to maintain government financial support. The proposals called for changes to be made to governance, hiring, and admissions, including the elimination of all DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) programs.
Harvard rejected the demands, accusing the White House of trying to “control” its campus. In response, US President Donald Trump’s administration announced it would freeze over $2.2 billion in federal grants and $60 million in government contracts with the university.
A little later on, however, an official from the Trump administration contacted Harvard, claiming that the letter was “unauthorized,” according to two people familiar with the matter.
The letter had reportedly been seen by Sean Keveney, acting general counsel at the Department of Health and Human Services and a member of the antisemitism task force, according to three other sources briefed on the incident.
Though the letter’s content was genuine, there were conflicting accounts within the administration about how it had been mishandled, an unnamed official told the newspaper. Some reportedly believed it was sent prematurely; others said it was meant for internal circulation only.
May Mailman, a senior policy strategist at the White House, acknowledged the controversy when speaking to the New York Times, but criticized Harvard for not verifying the letter.

Harvard rejected that criticism, saying the letter bore official federal signatures and appeared legitimate. “It remains unclear to us exactly what, among the government’s recent words and deeds, were mistakes or what the government actually meant to do and say. But even if the letter was a mistake, the actions the government took this week have real-life consequences” for students and employees as well as “the standing of American higher education in the world,” it said in a statement to the Times.
In October 2023, Israel declared war on Hamas, the militant organization which controls Gaza, after the Palestinian group launched a surprise attack against the Jewish state which claimed over 1,200 lives. The brutality of the large-scale offensive, which has left over 50,000 dead according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, has sparked university campus protests in the US, which has been providing West Jerusalem with weapons.
Columbia, Harvard, UC Berkeley, Yale, Michigan, and Northwestern became key protest sites last year, forming the backdrop for heightened tensions that have influenced the administration’s push for stricter campus oversight. Last month, the task force also cut $400 million in funding to Columbia and warned of further cuts.

The chancellor-in-waiting says he would commit to giving Kiev long-range missiles if London backs him
Germany’s chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz doesn’t officially take office until May 6, but that hasn’t stopped him from hitting the press circuit like it’s demolition day. Apparently, he’s got some lost time – and infrastructure – to make up for.
In a chat with Germany’s public broadcaster, ARD, he floated the idea that Kiev, which seems to rank higher than Berlin on his priority list, needs to “get ahead of the situation” on the battlefield and “shape events” instead of playing defense. The event he seems most eager to shape? Oh, just the Third World War, apparently. Because he pivoted straight to the Kerch Bridge – mainland Russia’s lifeline to the Crimean peninsula – like it’s been living on borrowed time.
Merz said that “if for example, the most important land connection between Russia and Crimea is destroyed, or if something happens on Crimea itself, where most of the Russian military logistics are located, then that would be an opportunity to bring this country strategically back into the picture finally.” Cool, cool. Which picture would that be, exactly? The one labeled “Catastrophic Misjudgments of the 21st Century”?
Probably. Which is why Merz needs a useful idiot to ride shotgun alongside him in the doltmobile to share in any responsibility for the eventual mayhem when things inevitably go pear-shaped.
“You rang?” say the Brits. Or at least that’s what Merz is apparently hoping they say. “Our European partners are already supplying cruise missiles,” Merz said in an interview. “The British are doing it, the French are doing it, and the Americans are doing it anyway, this must be jointly agreed. And if it’s agreed, then Germany should take part.”
Read moreIncoming German chancellor will change mind on missiles for Ukraine – SPD
Merz’s fellow Christian Democratic Party MPs have been floating the idea in the Western press that he’s waiting for an official permission slip from London.
It would probably read something like this: “Dear Herr Friedrich, You are hereby authorized to partake in a highly coordinated, militarized pub crawl. First stop: a punch-up with Russia, followed by a wobbly march to a greasy spoon for black coffee, bad lighting, and a collective hangover.”
“Ah, wunderbar!”
Merz is just days away from grabbing the wheel, and he’s done pretending to be the guy in the backseat yelling directions at Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Scholz, for his part, always said that Germany wouldn’t hand Kiev the Taurus long-range missiles. Not that he had much wiggle room after last year’s leaked audio from Russian intelligence of German Air Force brass workshopping ways to hit the Kerch Bridge without leaving any German fingerprints. Kind of a bad look for a guy who keeps overtly declaring that he wants peace. So naturally, he was furious. Which is why, if Team Scholz suddenly turned around now and said, “You know what? Let’s try a few long-range missile strikes, just for funsies,” people might reasonably assume that he’d undergone a surprise lobotomy with a NATO letter opener.
As the coalition partners for Merz’s incoming government, Scholz’s Social Democrats’ support would be needed on any vote. And so far, they’ve shown no interest in greenlighting his WW3 passion project. You know, democracy and all that.
Minor hiccup, I know. If military ambition and musings alone were all it took, Merz would already be well on his way to having a Netflix original named after him and maybe even a seat with his name on it waiting at The Hague.
Read moreUK would back giving German missiles to Ukraine – Telegraph
But hey, hear the guy out. What if it’s, like, a group project? Das ist gut, ja?
Nah, dude. Nicht gut. Nicht gut at all.
What exactly does Team Merz think this would look like? Would the Brits and Germans sit side by side, fingers hovering over their respective missile buttons, doing a tense little “one, two, three, fire” and just praying that neither one flinches at the last second and leaves the other one with some very awkward phone calls to make?
If so, that would certainly explain why they’re talking about specifically needing Britain’s non-negotiable participation and not France – the country that trained a flagship brigade for the Ukrainian army, who apparently learned how to bail out before even seeing action. “Paris hailed it as a ‘unique’ initiative,” reported France24. Training 1,700 Ukrainians in France to fight who then just end up surrendering to the foie gras and rosé at the local café prior to deployment is ‘unique’, alright.
Britain isn’t exactly a great choice for a wingman either, though. If only because it says that its own participation in Ukraine is contingent on Washington holding its hand. “Europe must play its role, and I’m prepared to consider committing British forces on the ground alongside others, if there is a lasting peace agreement, but there must be a US backstop,” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in February.
So for those keeping score at home. For deeper involvement in Ukraine, Merz would need the Brits. The Brits would need Washington. And what would Washington need? For them all to knock it off. But apparently that memo got lost in their inbox among all the world war fantasy fiction.

“Pentagon figures recently questioned one ally about why it was still supplying weapons to Ukraine – a challenge that was ignored,” The Economist reported on April 15. ”Diplomats in Washington also report that some Trump aides say privately that they are ‘fed up’ with Europe’s effort to strengthen Ukraine.”
Doesn’t sound like Team Trump is up for holding hands as part of the West’s human chain in its reckless playground games against Russia. “Red Rover, Red Rover, send Putin right over!”
It’s hard to believe that there was a time not too long ago that Germany wasn’t trusted with the sharp knives, like nukes. Oh wait, it still isn’t. Technically, the Bundeswehr is still supposed to be defense only, but Merz seems determined to assemble just enough multilateral hand-holding to justify pulling out the long knives – the 500-kilometer-long ones, to be precise. If this is the new leadership model, then someone better put all the launch codes in a childproof box.

Trump Reignites Fed Feud
Last week, we discussed the "tariff reprieve" that sent stocks ripping higher in the 3rd largest one-day advance on record.
"As we said last week, any good news would cause the market to rally sharply. On Wednesday, President Trump announced a 90-day pause on the full effect of new tariffs. Interestingly, the same headline sent stocks surging on Monday but was quickly deemed "fake news" by the White House. I suspect that Monday was a "leak" by the White House to test the market response, and President Trump kept that announcement handy to stave off a further decline in the markets. Whatever the reason, the markets needed the break."
However, this week, the market was hit following a speech by Fed Chair Jerome Powell, in which he stated that the administration's tariffs could spark "higher inflation and lower growth." If that sounds familiar, it should. In 2021, Powell noted that inflation would be transitory as the money supply exploded by 42%. He was wrong then and is likely wrong again by fixating on hypothetical tariff shocks while ignoring the deflationary "red flags" from falling oil prices, slowing consumption, declining savings rates, and rising delinquencies.
Unsurprisingly, President Trump responded to Powell's comments very quickly, reminiscent of the feud between the two during 2018. In a post on Truth Social, President Trump wrote:
Trump is correct in his statement. The ECB's decision to cut rates for the seventh time was unanimous. Regardless of Powell's reason for his position, the stress on the financial system is increasing. As we noted last week, credit spreads are rising, and there is clear evidence that the economy is weakening as consumer demand softens. The Federal Reserve remains overly concerned about missing the inflation push in 2021 by not recognizing the impact of shuttering economic production and sending checks to households. As such, the Fed will likely be late once again in identifying the deflationary pressure of tariffs on economic growth. Of course, just as in 2018, the Fed began cutting rates quickly during 2019 to stem the "repo crisis". The Fed may be wrong again.
Technical Update
While the markets await the next Federal Reserve meeting, the uncertainty over monetary policy weighs on markets as much as the uncertainty about tariffs. This past week, the market reversed some of its gains from the massive "tariff reprieve" surge. With the MACD back on a buy signal and money flows turning positive, buyers are tepidly stepping back into the market. The 20-DMA continues to act as overhead resistance, defining the current downtrend. While there is undoubtedly a risk of another test of recent lows, which should be expected and why caution remains advisable, a break above the 20-DMA would lead to a rally to the 50-DMA. (Monday's article will address the "Death Cross" and what it means for investors.)
As is always the case, the market prices in current events and looks forward with more optimistic expectations. While there are many media headline-driven narratives, the tariffs are now a well-known factor, and markets have priced most of the impact into current prices and valuations. Furthermore, the bond market appears to have started resolving the recent "basis trade" blow-up, with bond yields and volatility declining.
Does that mean that the market is now devoid of risk? No. But, as we will discuss further in today's commentary, we may be closing in on a near-term market low.
Let's focus on a primary question: Is the market close to a bottom?
Need Help With Your Investing Strategy?
Are you looking for complete financial, insurance, and estate planning? Need a risk-managed portfolio management strategy to grow and protect your savings? Whatever your needs are, we are here to help.
The Art Of Contrarianism
You have likely heard the media stat that “bears are like a ‘broken clock,’ they are right twice a day.” While it may seem true during a rising bull market, the statement exposes the ignorance of those making such a claim. If you invert the logic, such things become more evident.
“If ‘bears’ are right twice a day, then ‘bulls’ must be wrong twice a day.”
The biggest problem for investors, and the “broken clock syndrome,” is the emotional biases of being either “bullish” or “bearish.” Effectively, when individuals pick a side, they become oblivious to the risks. One of the most significant factors is “confirmation bias,” where individuals seek confirmation and ignore non-confirming data.
As investors, we should be open to all the data, weigh incoming data accordingly, and assess the risk inherent in our portfolios. That risk assessment should be an open analysis of our current positioning relative to the market environment. Being underweight equities in a rising bull market can be as harmful as being overweight in a bear market.
We believe you should not be “bullish” or “bearish.” While being “right” during the first half of the cycle is essential, it is far more critical not to be “wrong” during the second half.
Howard Marks once stated that being a “contrarian” is tough, lonely, and generally right. To wit:
“Resisting – and thereby achieving success as a contrarian – isn’t easy. Things combine to make it difficult; including natural herd tendencies and the pain imposed by being out of step, particularly when momentum invariably makes pro-cyclical actions look correct for a while. (That’s why it’s essential to remember that ‘being too far ahead of your time is indistinguishable from being wrong.’)
Given the uncertain nature of the future, and thus the difficulty of being confident your position is the right one – especially as price moves against you – it’s challenging to be a lonely contrarian.”
Emotions and volatility make us want to avoid the risk of loss. The increased price volatility and subsequent price decline created a substantially higher level of instability. That instability creates “fear” and drives investors to the behavioral bias of “loss aversion," ultimately leading to poor outcomes.
The fundamentally bearish arguments of valuations, earnings, a Fed policy mistake, and a recession are certainly viable outcomes. However, if “everyone” already expects those outcomes, what happens if something else occurs?
As Bob Farrell’s Rule Number 9 states:
“When all the experts and forecasts agree – something else is going to happen.
Here is some food for thought.
"The most fundamental premise of investing is to 'buy when everyone is fearful.' If excesses are built when everyone is on the same side of the trade, what should you do now?"
Risk Off Positioning Hits Extremes
We must evaluate the prevailing sentiment in the overall market to answer that question. Currently, market sentiment is extremely negative based on various measures, from investment positioning (what investors are doing in the market) to overall investor sentiment (how they feel about the market.}
For example, net bullish sentiment among retail and institutional investors is at some of the lowest levels on record, including during the "Financial Crisis." The extreme negativity is interesting because the recent decline was orderly and mild compared to the chaos during the financial crisis. Yet, investors are as bearish on the current market as they were then. However, it is worth noting that during previous instances when sentiment was as negative as it is currently, such readings were near market bottoms.
Furthermore, the sharp spike in the volatility index, which is considered a "market fear gauge," spiked to the highest levels seen since the COVID pandemic. If we combine the sentiment measures with the volatility index, we again see more extreme negative readings that often coincide with market lows rather than the beginning of larger reversions.
Other Measures Of Extremes
However, while our measures of fear and greed suggest that negative sentiment is reaching more extreme levels, other measures confirm the same. For example, the BofA survey of global investors intending to cut U.S. equities has been at its highest since the turn of the century. Such previous levels of negative sentiment on U.S. stocks have been a strong contrarian indicator for investors.
The same is shown by the rapid rotation out of U.S. stocks into foreign stocks. While many headlines are being written about that rotation, those duplicate headlines were written almost annually over the last 15 years. Due to strong economic and earnings forecasts, that rotation reverted into U.S. equities each time. In other words, the extremes in "sentiment" away from the U.S. were close to periods when investors should have been buying domestic equities.
However, the current levels are generally consistent with market lows, even when we return our focus to just U.S. equity positioning.
We see the same issue with professional funds that employ trading algorithms to manage equity exposure, which has also been reduced to levels more consistent with market lows rather than continued corrections.
Lastly, institutional funds based on volatility control have also cut exposures sharply.
With equity exposures very low, if there is any "good news" forthcoming, either economically, politically, or earnings-wise, the chase by these fund managers to increase equity exposure will fuel a significant rise in the market. For most investors, by the time they realize the correction is over, it will be far too late to take advantage of the opportunity.
Risk-Off Technical Indicators Also Suggest A Potential Low
When overall risk-off sentiment and positioning are at levels normally coincident with market bottoming processes, the technical indicators have also become so risk-off that they signal risk-on behavior. As we discussed earlier this week, Sentimentrader.com had a great breakdown of various technical indicators, all hitting extremely low levels. Those indicators run the relative strength, breadth, and market momentum gamut.
Sentimentrader tracks 21 indicators in total, which are then combined into a single indicator, giving readings of when markets are trading at more extreme bullish or bearish levels. As shown, the market is currently trading at more extreme risk-off levels. While this does not mean the market is about to rise, historically, such extreme readings have been close to market bottoms.
As Sentimentrader.com notes:
“Declines in the Risk On/Risk Off indicator below 35 have been associated with volatile periods in the market involving significant declines. “Playing defense” during these periods can, at times, help investors avoid some of the financial and psychological pain of riding significant drawdowns to the bottom fully invested. However, this indicator has gone so far to the unfavorable extreme that it might be “so bad that it’s good.”
Historically, when indicators reach such extreme levels, most previous advances or declines are likely complete. However, it does not mean that markets can not go even further into extremes before reaching a bottom. As Sentimentrader.com concluded:
“The good news is that – on a standalone basis – the signal and performance highlighted above make a compelling favorable case for stocks. The bad news is that we would never advise basing portfolio decisions on any one indicator or indicator signal. The proper message from the results above is NOT “All clear for stocks, and happy days are here again.” The proper message is “Ignore the bearish noise, manage risk, and keep an open mind to the potential for better results moving forward – but especially manage risk.”
We agree. Investors usually make psychological investment decisions during market declines to avoid further losses. That is entirely understandable, but as discussed previously, it is one of the leading causes of long-term underperformance.
We Are The Enemy, And The Enemy Is Me
The lesson is that headlines drive sentiment, and rallies can form when sentiment becomes too negative, as may be the case today. Does this mean the next major bull market rally is set to begin? No. But it does suggest that there are such high levels of negative sentiment that selling today will likely be a mistake.
The most significant problems for individuals are the “herding effect” and “loss aversion.” Notably, “loss aversion” is one of the leading factors influencing investment decisions, according to a survey from the CFA Institute.
“Loss aversion is a tendency in behavioral finance where investors are so fearful of losses that they focus on trying to avoid a loss more so than on making gains. The more one experiences losses, the more likely they are to become prone to loss aversion.” – Corporate Finance Institute
Unsurprisingly, investor psychology is one of the most significant reasons individuals consistently fail to achieve their investment goals. Our behavioral traits plague our investment decision-making.
Here is one last example. Price volatility, particularly when prices are declining rapidly, elicits our emotional response of panic. However, while rising volatility from low levels is a risk-off warning, high levels of volatility have often been a risk-on indicator. When the VIX closes above 45, which signals extreme investor fear, it has historically marked strong long-term buying opportunities. Following such spikes, the S&P 500 has more than doubled on average over five years, significantly outperforming periods of lower volatility. Opportunistic rebalancing during these dislocations can enhance long-term portfolio resilience.
George Dvorsky once wrote that:
“The human brain is capable of 1016 processes per second, which makes it far more powerful than any computer currently in existence. But that doesn’t mean our brains don’t have major limitations. The lowly calculator can do math thousands of times better than we can, and our memories are often less than useless — plus, we’re subject to cognitive biases, those annoying glitches in our thinking that cause us to make questionable decisions and reach erroneous conclusions.“
In other words:
“The most dangerous element to our success as investors…is ourselves.”
As a contrarian investor, excesses get built when everyone is on the same side of the trade.
From that basis, while it is easy to be very negative about the market currently, everyone is so bearish that the markets could respond in a manner no one expects.
We are not saying it will be the case, but we should be very open to the possibility.
How We Are Trading It
The problem with being a contrarian is determining where you are during a market cycle. The collective wisdom of market participants is generally “right” during the middle of a market advance but “wrong” at market peaks and troughs. Therefore, there are some actions we can take to navigate the uncertainty.
- Move slowly. There is no rush to make dramatic changes. Doing anything in a moment of “panic” tends to be the wrong thing.
- If you are overweight equities, DO NOT try to fully adjust your portfolio to your target allocation in one move. Again, after significant declines, individuals feel like they “must” do something. Think logically about where you want to be and use the rally to adjust to that level.
- Begin by selling laggards and losers. These positions were dragging on performance as the market rose, and they led the way down.
- Add to sectors, or positions, that are performing with or outperforming the broader market if you need risk exposure.
- Move “stop-loss” levels up to recent lows for each position. Managing a portfolio without “stop-loss” levels is like driving with your eyes closed.
- Be prepared to sell into the rally and reduce overall portfolio risk. You will sell many positions at a loss simply because you overpaid for them. Selling at a loss DOES NOT make you a loser. It just means you made a mistake.
- If none of this makes sense, please consider hiring someone to manage your portfolio. It will be worth the additional expense over the long term.
Just remember:
“In good times, skepticism means recognizing the things that are too good to be true; that’s something everyone knows. But in bad times, it requires sensing when things are too bad to be true. People have a hard time doing that. The things that terrify other people will probably terrify you too, but to be successful, an investor has to be a stalwart. After all, most of the time the world doesn’t end, and if you invest when everyone else thinks it will, you’re apt to get some bargains.“

S&P 500 Weekly Tear Sheet
Relative Performance Analysis
Stocks had another volatile week of trading as the bond market remains pressured by the leverage unwind. The good news is that the market is not overbought. The bad news is that the markets aren't oversold yet. While risk is subsiding in the near term, there is a lack of a catalyst to move stocks higher. Some good news on the tariff front or better-than-expected earnings over the next two weeks could certainly provide some needed relief. However, by the end of the month, stock buybacks return, which will give some support to equities headed into May.
Technical Composite
The technical overbought/sold gauge comprises several price indicators (R.S.I., Williams %R, etc.), measured using “weekly” closing price data. Readings above “80” are considered overbought, and below “20” are oversold. The market peaks when those readings are 80 or above, suggesting prudent profit-taking and risk management. The best buying opportunities exist when those readings are 20 or below.
The current reading is 23.51 out of a possible 100.
Portfolio Positioning “Fear / Greed” Gauge
The “Fear/Greed” gauge is how individual and professional investors are “positioning” themselves in the market based on their equity exposure. From a contrarian position, the higher the allocation to equities, the more likely the market is closer to a correction than not. The gauge uses weekly closing data.
NOTE: The Fear/Greed Index measures risk from 0 to 100. It is a rarity that it reaches levels above 90.
The current reading is 45.35 out of a possible 100.

How To Read This Table
- The table compares the relative performance of each sector and market to the S&P 500 index.
- “MA XVER” (Moving Average Crossover) is determined by the short-term weekly moving average crossing positively or negatively with the long-term weekly moving average.
- The risk range is a function of the month-end closing price and the “beta” of the sector or market. (Ranges reset on the 1st of each month)
- The table shows the price deviation above and below the weekly moving averages.
The recent correction has pushed most markets and sectors below their normal risk ranges. Gold is exceedingly overbought and deviated from long-term averages. Look to take profits and rebalance risks accordingly. With most markets and sectors on bearish crossover signals, the market likely has more work to do before the current correction process is complete. Continue to carry higher levels of cash and hedges for now.

Efforts to intimidate Christian worshipers will fail, Emir Kusturica has said in response to Moldova’s treatment of a bishop
The move by authorities in Chisinau to prevent a Moldovan bishop from attending an annual ceremony in Jerusalem is part of a wider war against Orthodox Christianity, renowned Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica has said.
Bishop Marchel of the Moldovan Orthodox Church was set to fly to Israel on Thursday for the Holy Fire ritual on April 19. He told the media that border police at Chisinau airport had stopped him for a search and returned his passport only after his plane had departed, despite finding nothing suspicious. Marchel later said his second attempt to board a flight to Israel was also “unjustifiably” blocked by the authorities.
The Holy Fire ritual at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, held on Holy Saturday, is a key event which precedes Orthodox Easter. The flame is believed to descend miraculously each year at the site of Christ’s crucifixion. Pilgrims light candles from it and take the fire back to their home countries to light others as part of an ancient holiday tradition.

When asked by RIA Novosti on Friday about the Moldovan government’s treatment of the bishop, Kusturica said, “after the attack on the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, nothing surprises me anymore.”
In late March, Ukrainian officials and police broke into the catacombs of the country’s most important monastery, the burial site of early Orthodox saints. The move came amid a power struggle over the Kiev Pechersk Lavra between the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) and the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), created only in 2018 and backed by the government of Vladimir Zelensky.
“It was a sign of war against the Orthodox world, against Orthodox Russians and all Orthodox believers,” the two-time Palme d'Or winner said about the events in Kiev.
The blocking of the Moldovan bishop’s trip to Jerusalem “continues that same battle. They think that with new secular political steps they will first intimidate and then destroy Orthodox civilization. But they will not succeed,” Kusturica insisted.

As in neighboring Ukraine, Moldova has faced religious tensions involving two major Orthodox factions: the Moldovan Orthodox Church, which is affiliated with the Moscow Patriarchate, and the Metropolis of Bessarabia, under the Romanian Orthodox Church. Amid rising geopolitical tensions with Russia, the pro-EU government in Chisinau has largely backed the Bucharest-aligned metropolis.

Site: Saint Louis Catholic
I get that this may be an incomplete story. But IF this is true, I cannot believe this can be allowed to happen. By Catholics. A venerable parish church (building, not the reconfigured parish) is closing because the parish can’t be bothered to raise $30,000? This community was settled by German immigrant Catholics, and their community built this House of God. Now it will be abandoned.
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – After 130 years, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Arnold has been closed for safety reasons. It was damaged during the March 14 tornado that hit Arnold.
“It’s sad that it has to close,” said Carol Eichelberger
Parishioners are still coming to grips with the news.
“130 years, that’s a lot of history. That’s a lot of weddings, that’s a lot of funerals, that’s a lot of baptisms,” said Judge Eagle.
According to Reverend Gerald Blessing, pastor of Holy Family parish where the church is located, the storm caused cracks in the mortar on the exterior of the building. When an engineer inspected the inside of the bell tower, more cracks were found.
“And the report stated for safe use, he’s becoming less and less comfortable with the amount of wind load that that steeple could take,” he said.
The church building was closed out of an abundance of caution, and masses were moved across the parking lot to the parish center.
Engineers recommended the bell tower be reinforced with steel to ensure its safety, at an estimated cost of over $100,000. While insurance would cover the cost, Blessing said $30,000 in additional repairs, for tuckpointing and interior plastering, were not covered.
According to Blessing, parish leadership and the parish finance committee made the decision that the cost of keeping the building safely operational outweighed the benefit. With the decision not to add steel reinforcements to the bell tower, the church’s years of service had come to an end.
“It’s hard, but they are, they’re fighting through it because they’re faithful people,” said Fr. Blessing.
A mass and prayer service is planned for April 27 to pay tribute to the building that served the parish for 130 years.

Why is there no Mass on Holy Saturday?
Holy Saturday is a period of waiting. The Church awaits the Resurrection of Jesus following his suffering and death on the cross on Good Friday.
Paschalis Solemnitatis, a Vatican document regarding “The Preparation And Celebration Of The Easter Feasts,” explains:
"On Holy Saturday, the Church is, as it were, at the Lord's tomb, meditating on his Passion and Death, and on his descent into Hell, and awaiting his resurrection with prayer and fasting. “The Church abstains strictly from the celebration of the sacrifice of the Mass” on Holy Saturday.Catholics celebrate Mass on Easter Vigil, which “takes place at night. It should not begin before nightfall; it should end before daybreak on Sunday.”Why is There No Mass on Holy Saturday? Franciscan Priest Explains the Reason
In an exclusive video for ChurchPOP, EWTN priest Father Leonard Mary, MFVA, of the Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word, briefly explains why Catholics do not celebrate Mass on Holy Saturday and why the Eucharistic Tabernacle is empty.
On Holy Saturday, “we continue to prayerfully meditate on the death of Jesus, being in mourning but in longing for His glorious Resurrection,” Father Leonard Mary says.

"My brothers and sisters: it's Holy Saturday, and when we enter our churches, we experience emptiness, dryness, and even a little sadness. The Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist is not in the Tabernacle. There is no celebration of Holy Mass. In fact, we haven't offered Mass since Holy Thursday evening. "Yesterday, on Good Friday, we entered deeper into the mysteries of the suffering and death of Jesus. And today, we continue to prayerfully meditate on the death of Jesus, being in mourning but in longing for His glorious Resurrection, which we will experience this evening at the Easter vigil. And so may Almighty God bless you, give you his peace, the Father the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen."Have a blessed Easter! ✝️

During the coronavirus scare, bureaucrats in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) relentlessly claimed “the science” demanded that people stay isolated at home as much as possible, wear masks, keep at least six feet away from everyone else, refrain from obtaining early treatment, take shot after shot of experimental coronavirus “vaccines,” et cetera. Media and politicians largely echoed these sketchy demands.
Admirably, some people tried to educate Americans about how much of this United States government supported coronavirus propaganda was wrong. Among the most prominent of these critics was Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
Now Kennedy is the new leader of HHS. Last week he told President Donald Trump at a Cabinet meeting that “a massive testing and research effort” would be undertaken to ensure that “by September we will know what has caused the autism epidemic and we’ll be able to eliminate those exposures.”
There is reason for optimism that this investigation into the cause of autism will contribute to accomplishing in some part the goal of Make American Healthy Again (MAHA) that Kennedy references from time to time. After all, Kennedy’s reputation as a critical outsider has led to expectation he will reject the businesses as usual, special interests driven approach at HHS.
Yet, it is important to keep in mind that what we are seeing here also appears to be another example of a centralized government project to decree “the science.”
Over the long term, should that sort of approach be trusted to yield good results? Kennedy won’t be leading HHS forever. Future HHS leaders will have their own projects to fund and staff, likely informed by a very different orientation than Kennedy’s. For proponents of health and liberty, one step forward and two steps back may be the story of HHS a few years down the road — if Kennedy himself can manage in his tenure to improve the gargantuan department.
By all means, wish Kennedy success in disseminating information that will reduce the incidence of autism in America, with the caveat that liberty also be respected. But, at the same time, recognize that many of the problems related to health in America, as with coronavirus, have been significantly contributed to by establishing centralized government power over medicine. For the long term, Americans’ greatest gain for health would likely come from removing government involvement in health matters. Fail to do this and the special interests with much to gain and the power seekers will again take hold of the levers of power, with actually promoting health while respecting liberty shunted far from the first priority.

Where is Christ after He dies on Friday afternoon and before He rises on Easter Sunday? Both Scripture and Tradition answer this question. Consider the following excerpt from a second century sermon as well as this meditation from the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Ancient Homily for Holy Saturday (ca. 2nd century A.D.):
Today a great silence reigns on earth, a great silence and a great stillness. A great silence because the King is asleep. The earth trembled and is still because God has fallen asleep in the flesh and he has raised up all who have slept ever since the world began. … He has gone to search for Adam, our first father, as for a lost sheep. Greatly desiring to visit those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death, he has gone to free from sorrow Adam in his bonds and Eve, captive with him—He who is both their God and the son of Eve. … “I am your God, who for your sake have become your Son. … I order you, O sleeper, to awake. I did not create you to be a prisoner in hell. Rise from the dead, for I am the life of the dead.”
Nothing could be more beautiful than that line addressed to Adam and Eve: “I am your God, who for your sake have become your Son.”
St Ephrem the Deacon also attests to this descent among the dead and describes it rather colorfully:
Death could not devour our Lord unless he possessed a body, neither could hell swallow him up unless he bore our flesh; and so he came in search of a chariot in which to ride to the underworld. This chariot was the body which he received from the Virgin; in it he invaded death’s fortress, broke open its strongroom and scattered all its treasure. (Sermo de Domino nostro, 3-4. 9: Opera edit. Lamy, 1, 152-158. 166-168)
Scripture also testifies to Christ’s descent to the dead and what He did: For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison. … For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does (1 Peter 3:18; 1 Peter 4:6).
The Catechism of the Catholic Church on Christ’s descent to the dead (excerpts from CCC # 632-635):
[The] first meaning given in the apostolic preaching to Christ’s descent into hell [is] that Jesus, like all men, experienced death and in his soul joined the others in the realm of the dead.
But he descended there as Savior, proclaiming the Good News to the spirits imprisoned there [cf. 1 Pet 3:18-19]. Scripture calls the abode of the dead, to which the dead Christ went down, “hell”—Sheol in Hebrew, or Hades in Greek—because those who are there are deprived of the vision of God [cf. Phil 2:10; Acts 2:24; Rev 1:18; Eph 4:9; Pss 6:6; 88:11-13].
Such is the case for all the dead, whether evil or righteous, while they await the Redeemer [cf. Ps 89:49; 1 Sam 28:19; Ezek 32:17-32; Luke 16:22-26]. “It is precisely these holy souls, who awaited their Savior … whom Christ the Lord delivered when he descended into hell” [Roman Catechism I, 6, 3].
Jesus did not descend into hell to deliver the damned, nor to destroy the hell of damnation, but to free the just who had gone before him.
[So] the gospel was preached even to the dead. The descent into hell brings the Gospel message of salvation to complete fulfillment. This is the last phase of Jesus’ messianic mission, a phase which is condensed in time but vast in its real significance: the spread of Christ’s redemptive work to all men of all times and all places, for all who are saved have been made sharers in the redemption.
Christ went down into the depths of death so that “the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live” [1 Peter 4:6]. Jesus, “the Author of life”, by dying, destroyed “him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and [delivered] all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage” [Heb 2:14-15; cf. Acts 3:15].
Henceforth the risen Christ holds “the keys of Death and Hades”, so that “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth” [Rev 1:18; Phil 2:10].

Is it not the Veil of Veronica in Manoppello, but the Holy Face (the small burial shroud)?By Roberto de Mattei*
Simon of Cyrene and Veronica are two figures that the tradition of the Church have placed close to the hearts of the faithful because they participate in the Passion of Our Lord during the Way of the Cross.
Of Simon, the Gospel says: "And they compelled a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross" (Mk 15:21).
Simon of Cyrene, a city in North African Libya where there was a flourishing Jewish community at the time, happened to be passing by and was forced to carry the cross because Jesus no longer had the strength, and the Jews wanted him to go all the way to Golgotha to have him crucified there. The compulsion to which Simon was subjected became an extraordinary privilege for him. It is therefore permissible to imagine that divine providence chose him because his soul was seized with deep compassion in the face of the shameful spectacle.
Veronica, on the other hand, acted on her own initiative, out of that impulse that often makes women more generous and self-sacrificing than men. The reward for her was extraordinary. According to tradition, the image of the Holy Face of Jesus was imprinted on the linen cloth that she had offered the Savior to wipe the blood and sweat from his face.
Little is known about both, but the fact that Mark's Gospel (15:21) mentions Simon's sons suggests that his family may have played an active role in the early Church, and that the Rufus mentioned by Mark is the same one Paul mentions in the Letter to the Romans when he says: "Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord; also his mother, who has been a mother to me as well" (Rom 16:13).
Veronica does not appear in the canonical Gospels, but unlike Simon, she is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church, which makes her an undisputed historical figure who, thanks to her veil, which has become one of the most precious relics of Christianity, holds great significance in ecclesiastical veneration.
The Veil of Veronica has been kept in St. Peter's Basilica since at least the beginning of the 8th century, when Pope John VII had a special chapel built in St. Peter's dedicated to the relic, which, like many others, may have come from Constantinople. The recognition of its authenticity is also evident in the fact that Pope Innocent III, in the 13th century, approved its public display, and from then on, it was shown to pilgrims from the loggia of St. Peter's Basilica on special occasions, attracting a large influx of faithful. This is attested to by Dante Alighieri, who, in a famous passage of the Divine Comedy, compares himself to one of the many pilgrims who came "perhaps from Croatia" to venerate the icon of the Face of Christ in the first Holy Year in the Church's history in 1300:
Like one who perhaps comes from Croatia
to see our Veronica,
who cannot be sated with his ancient longing,
but says in his thought while he gazes:
"My Lord Jesus Christ, true God,
was then your face like this?"
Paradise, XXXI, 103–108
An expression of this veneration is also the large statue of Veronica by the sculptor Francesco Mocchi from 1640, located in a niche of the four pillars of St. Peter's Basilica.
The Jesuit Heinrich Pfeiffer (1939–1921), professor of art history at the Pontifical Gregorian University, argues in his book Il Volto Santo di Manoppello ("The Holy Face of Manoppello," Carsa Edizioni, Pescara 2000) that the precious relic, which was kept in St. Peter's Basilica for centuries, was allegedly stolen and secretly brought to the small Abruzzese town of Manoppello between 1608 and 1618.
Veronika Maria Seifert, lecturer in Church history at the Sant’Apollinare Higher Institute of Religious Sciences, concludes in her meticulously researched book Il sudario della Veronica e il Volto Santo. Storia e devozione ("The Sudarium of Veronica and the Holy Face. History and Devotion," Velar, Bergamo 2024) that the relic removed from St. Peter's Basilica in the 17th century was not the Veil of Veronica, but the Holy Face, that is, the small burial shroud that John saw in the empty tomb (Jn 20:7). The Mother of God, the apostles, and the disciples had carefully collected all the objects that had come into contact with Jesus, explains the author of this study, and the two relics, which were kept in the Church from generation to generation, both came to Rome. The Veil of Veronica is still in the Vatican, while the Holy Face was brought to the Capuchin monastery of Manoppello in the 17th century. There are unfathomable points of contact between the two relics, but also profound differences: from the closed or open eyes to the more or less recognizable "image" imprinted on the cloth.
St. Peter's Basilica has claimed possession of the Veil of Veronica since the Early Middle Ages and last publicly displayed it on April 6, 2025, as on every fifth Sunday of Lent, from the Veronica Loggia. The holy relics considered "Acheiropoieta," that is, images not painted by human hands that show the faithful the image of the suffering, dead, and risen Christ, are therefore three: the Veil of Veronica, the Holy Face of Manoppello, and the Shroud of Turin.
Regardless of the number of these relics and the place where they are kept, the Holy Face of Jesus has always been deeply venerated. Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face was an ardent devotee. She contemplated with immense love the Face of Jesus, which, despite the traces of all the wounds, blows, and humiliations suffered, expressed an impressive mercy, gentleness, and noble features.
The Church is the mystical body of Christ and stands before us like Christ before Veronica. In the Holy Face that Veronica has transmitted to us, we contemplate today the sufferings of the Church, which suffers on its Good Friday but preserves the extraordinary dignity that made the Face of Christ shine in his suffering. The saints of all centuries have wept over the suffering of Christ. May the Mother of God at least moisten our eyes and stir our hardened hearts, uniting us closely with her redeeming compassion during the Holy Triduum.

The peninsula voted to secede from Ukraine following the Western-backed 2014 coup in Kiev
The US could recognize Crimea as Russian territory as part of a potential peace deal between Moscow and Kiev, Bloomberg reported early Saturday morning, citing people familiar with the matter.
The region voted to secede from Ukraine and rejoin Russia in 2014 shortly after the US-backed coup in Kiev.
Ukrainian authorities have refused to recognize Moscow’s sovereignty over the peninsula, which is predominantly ethnically Russian, and have long insisted on restoring their country’s 1991 borders.
Bloomberg cited its sources as saying that the White House has not yet made a final decision on the matter.
The top US negotiator, Steve Witkoff, said after a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week that the talks hinged on the status of Crimea and four other Russian regions claimed by Kiev.

According to Bloomberg, the US presented its European allies on Thursday with a plan to freeze the fighting along the current front line and ease sanctions on Moscow as part of a ceasefire.
Both US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio hinted this week that Washington could abandon efforts to broker a deal between Russia and Ukraine if no significant progress is made soon.
Russia has demanded that, in order to assure a lasting peace, Ukraine must renounce its territorial claims and withdraw its troops from the parts of the Russian regions it still controls. Moscow said that a future settlement must address “the root causes” of the conflict, including NATO’s eastward expansion and Ukraine’s plans to join the alliance.

The US state of Virginia’s seal has been pulled from Texas school platforms, according to Axios
A US school district has removed an online civics lesson about Virginia and its state flag due to rules against frontal nudity, Axios has reported.
The Virginia official flag features the state seal, which depicts the Roman goddess Virtus standing over a defeated tyrant. In line with classical imagery, Virtus is partially draped, with one breast exposed.
According to Axios report on Friday, the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District (CISD), located outside Houston, Texas, has removed the Virginia lesson from an online platform used by elementary students in grades three to five. The district confirmed the move in response to a Freedom of Information Act request filed by the Texas Freedom to Read Project.
The group’s co-director, Anne Russey, said the district cited its newly adopted policy banning “visual depictions or illustrations of frontal nudity” in elementary school library materials.
The removed content was part of PebbleGo Next, an educational website used by schools across the US, including some in Virginia.
Virginia’s original 1776 state seal portrayed the Roman goddess Virtus clad in toga and a full breastplate. The imagery was adopted for the state flag in 1861, when the legislature placed the seal on a blue field to formalize it as Virginia’s official emblem. In 1901, however, a redesign introduced the bare-breasted figure after the secretary of the commonwealth criticized the earlier version for lacking “artistic grace and beauty” and appearing too masculine.
Y’all. This is not normal. Texas is broken. Can we speak to the manager? https://t.co/mu1DIVLPQO
— TX Freedom to Read Project (@TXFreedomRead) April 16, 2025The current design, finalized in 1931, shows Virtus in a helmet, holding a spear and sword above a fallen tyrant, with the state’s Latin motto that reads Sic Semper Tyrannis – “Thus Always to Tyrants.”
The Texas Freedom to Read Project, which advocates against book bans and censorship, criticized the flag’s removal and the law behind it. On its website, the group described state policies as “vague and confusing.”
“Today, it’s the Virginia state flag. Tomorrow will it be books that contain historical photos…” the group said.

Site: Bonfire of the Vanities - Fr. Martin Fox
This day, which stands at the center of our Sacred Three Days,
Is the Day of all days.
The Cross stands at the center of time; and all Creation, all history,
revolves around it as the earth revolves on its axis.
Thus everyone, without exception,
must come and stand before the Cross.
That is the meaning of the Final Judgment each human soul will face.
So it is a mercy that God has draws us here, now,
while you and I can still be changed by it.
We see the Cross, and we ask “Why?”
Be very clear: No one made Jesus do this.
The Father did not make his Son do this.
Before time, Father, Son and Holy Spirit knew man would sin.
God saw it all,
From the vanity and self-importance,
Wrath and pride, lust and greed and gluttony;
To the cruelty people visit on each other large and small,
From Cain and Abel, to Hitler and Mao,
To the crack of a whip, the prison of a slum,
The office of an abortionist, and all the forms of our indifference.
Before anything began, God saw it all…
And He went ahead. He chose to create us.
And he chose to become one of us.
Was there no other way but the Cross?
Of course there was. God chose this way.
Remember, God didn’t invent the Cross; humanity did.
Had God never become man,
man would still have faced a cross, but now alone;
and it would have been all death with no life.
St. Thomas Aquinas tells us the Cross was “too much”:
“Any suffering of his, however slight,
was enough to redeem the human race…”
The Cross is God’s exclamation mark
on the sheer extravagance of his mercy.
God did the maximum where the minimum
would already have been generous!
Archbishop Fulton Sheen said this:
“I tell you that if God had not come down …
and given us the supreme example of sacrifice,
then it would be possible for fathers and mothers,
men and women of countless ages,
to do something greater, it would seem,
than God himself could not* do, namely,
lay down their lives for a friend.”
Why the Cross?
Consider an amazing image from our patron,
Pope Saint John Paul II:
God came to earth—so man could put God on trial—
so that man could forgive God.
Our late pope asked, "Could God have justified himself
before human history, so full of suffering,
without placing Christ’s Cross at the center of that history?
"Obviously, one response could be
that God does not need to justify himself to man.
It is enough that he is omnipotent.
From this perspective everything he does or allows
must be accepted.
"But God, who besides being Omnipotence is Wisdom
and—to repeat once again—Love,
desires to justify himself to mankind.
"He is not the Absolute that remains outside
of the world, indifferent to human suffering.
He is Emmanuel, God-with-us,
a God who shares man’s lot
and participates in his destiny.
"The crucified Christ is proof of God’s solidarity
with man in his suffering."
We blame God. God does not argue.
He comes to us; offers himself for trial.
Pilate presides, and we are in that court as jury.
We found him guilty; we sentenced him to death.
The price is paid. God himself atones.
God and man are reconciled.
We see the horror of the Cross; we see the horror of human evil;
and we wonder—can man be saved?
The Cross is our answer.
It is God saying “Yes.”

Washington still hopes to see the fighting stop, the US President has stated
US President Donald Trump has said that Washington could abandon efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict if Moscow and Kiev don’t engage in negotiations. He added, however, the US still hopes to see the fighting come to an end.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump was asked to comment on remarks by the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who had suggested that the White House could walk away from efforts to broker a settlement.
“If for some reason one of the two parties makes it very difficult, we’re just going to say you’re foolish, you’re fools, you’re horrible people,” Trump said, adding “We’re going to just take a pass, but hopefully we won’t have to do that.”
Earlier on Friday, the secretary of state told journalists that the White House is still waiting to see if a peace deal is “doable.”
“We need to figure out here, now, within a matter of days, whether this is doable in the short term, because if it’s not, then I think we’re just going to move on,” Rubio said.
Rubio refused to comment on what is being discussed, but called it a “broad framework.”
“Marco [Rubio] is right in saying we want to see it [the conflict] end,” Trump said, noting “I think we have a good chance of solving the problem.”

Trump has repeatedly claimed he wants a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict as soon as possible. Russia and the US have been engaged in negotiations since Trump took office in January. The two countries have held several rounds of high-level talks while Kiev and its Western backers have continued to push for escalation.
Moscow has maintained it is open to peace talks, provided its core security demands are addressed. Russia opposes any NATO presence on Ukrainian soil and has demanded that Kiev recognize Russia’s new borders and abandon its plans to join NATO or acquire nuclear weapons.
The Russian government, however, has said it will not accept a freeze of the conflict, which will only lead to renewed hostilities later on, citing Ukraine’s multiple violations of a US-mediated moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure as proof of Kiev’s untrustworthiness.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday the ongoing negotiations to secure peace in the Ukraine conflict are “difficult,” but Russia remains committed to resolving the crisis. He said there’s some progress but numerous challenging issues remain on the table.

That is my extreme finding that no one wants to acknowledge and I do not blame them, since it is pretty frightening. AND I HOPE I AM WRONG".The best evidence that Trump is a CHABAD-member is that he made a special effort to visit the grave of the main CHABAD Antichrist-like figure Menachem Mendel Schneerson on 7 Oct 2024, the anniversary of the attacks by the Antichrist State of Israel (which ZioFascist "defense" minister Yoav Gallant admitted the ZioFascists went along with as a false-flag to "justify" the launch of the Gaza Holocaust).By now, about 1 million Arabic-Semites have been genocided in the Gaza Holocaust since 7 Oct 2023. That increased the overall death-toll of the Arabic-Semitic Holocaust to 12 million since 1948. What bigger signal of ZioFascist Trump being a CHABAD-member could you wish for than that visit? That is about as clear, or as demonstrative, a signal as you are going to get.Note: Although many considered Schneerson to be the Antichrist, he himself eschewed this praise in 1994, when he made a highly revealing statement to his followers. He told them that the Antichrist will not arrive until the Jews have first done their "sacred" duty by genociding MOST Christians so as to "merit" the arrival of the Antichrist, who will ultimately reward them by granting them the Talmudic "new" world order and by granting every Jew 2800 Goyim "Livestock" ("animals") as his slaves in perpetuity. Among these slaves will be the Christian minority who survive the massive cull. The slaves are confirmed by Talmud Simeon Haddarsen, fol. 56-D, which states: "When the Jewish messiah [i.e. the Antichrist] comes, every Jew will have 2800 slaves".What Henry is saying is that US Christians, and especially "Christian" Zionists, simply do not want to even acknowledge that Trump idolizes the main CHABAD Antichrist-like figure Schneerson, who openly stated that all Christians must be genocided as the very PREREQUISITE for the Talmudic "new" world order to arrive.Henry adds: "With the help of their Gentile Freemason lackeys, the 'Illuminati' Jews and the CHABAD Satanists have been sabotaging Western civilization for 300-400 years now. And I have tons of evidence in my four 'Illuminati' books that they are on both sides of every war, because that is the way they undermine Western civilization and increase their power and money".Kevin is skeptical about Putin being a member of CHABAD, and cites the 2011 book "Everyday Saints and Other Stories" by Russian author (now metropolitan) Archimandrite Tikhon, who is Putin's Orthodox spiritual advisor. But Henry counters: "There are hundreds of pictures of Putin with CHABAD rabbi Berel Lazar, who also stated that, as a child, the CHABAD practically adopted Putin. In the 1990s. Schneerson stated the CHABAD planned to start a war between Russia and Ukraine as the only way to exterminate more of what he called 'obstinate' Slavs".Kevin acknowledges the Big Picture: Freemasonry was taken over by Sabbatean-Frankism which was led first by Sabbatai Zevi in 1650-75 (who proclaimed himself the Antichrist or Jewish "messiah" in 1666) and later led by Jacob Frank in 1740-90 (who proclaimed himself the Antichrist AND the reincarnation of the previous Antichrist Sabbatai Zevi).Around 1800, the Zionist House of Rothschild took over Sabbatean-Frankism, essentially making it what is today dubbed "the satanic Rothschild synagogue of Sabbatean-Frankism". This synagogue has a diabolical plan to destroy everything and then to rebuild and rule, and this is essentially the ideology of both Sabbatean-Frankist Freemasonry and the Sabbatean-Frankist CHABAD.Henry adds: "That is EXACTLY the agenda that is running the world, except that they are on both sides of every conflict. One side is the Zionist side in London, NYC, Tel Aviv, and their supporters in Ukraine, Argentina etc. On the other side is the Bolshevik side [partly led by George Soros and his son Alex Soros] which is mainly Russia, China, and Iran. But Sabbatean-Frankist Freemasonry and the Sabbatean-Frankist CHABAD run both sides, with the stated goal of pitting these two sides against each other in WW3, in order to depopulate the world".Henry adds: "We must fight the enemy because the enemy cannot herd cats. And, if we merely connect the dots, the picture that emerges is horrifying. But, if we want to fight the enemy, we should at least know who he is".Kevin mentions how lib-tard Jewish professor Sandra Lubarsky totally shocked him when she claimed (actually fully in line with the satanic Talmud): "Today, we Jews are all in agreement that 'god' means the Jewish people".Henry concurs, adding that, in the eyes of Satanist Jews, the biggest "mistake" that the Goyim "Livestock" are making today is that they are not worshipping Organized Jewry as "god".Henry adds an apt quote that British-Freemasonic-Agent "Voltaire" (François-Marie Arouet) gave already as early as 1771: "The Jews are born with a raging fanaticism in their hearts, just as the Germans are born with blond hair. I would not in the least be surprised if these people would some day become deadly to the human race".Henry: "Assimilated Jews are really the 'opposite' of Zionist Jews [because they serve their nation rather than the Antichrist State of Israel]. But, Assimilated Jews are being set up to take the blame for a coming calamity. And Assimilated Jews have got to STAND UP, like I am doing. Apart from that, the CHABAD fully intends to kill Assimilated Jews who do not believe that Organized Jewry is 'god' ...".Henry adds: "Always keep in mind that the Sabbatean-Frankist Jews, also called the Kabbalist Jews, also called the CHABAD Satanists, absolutely WORSHIP death and destruction, expecially whenever those happen to the Goyim 'Livestock'. And when I say Kabbalist Jews, I do not mean ordinary or Assimilated Jews, who are dupes like everyone else. Remember that the AGENDA OF THE CHABAD IS DESTRUCTION".

OBEDIENS USQUE AD MORTEM
Meditation on Good Friday
in Passione et Morte DominiChristus factus est pro nobis
obediens usque ad mortem, mortem autem crucis:
propter quod et Deus exaltavit illum,
et dedit illi nomen, quod est super omne nomen;
ut in nomine Jesu omne genu flectatur
cœlestium, terrestrium et infernorum,
et omnis lingua confiteatur,
quia Dominus Jesus Christus
in gloria est Dei Patris.Phil 2: 8-11
Ecce lignum Crucis, in quo salus mundi pependit. An ancient melody, in three ascending tones, accompanies the unveiling of the Holy Cross during the rites of Good Friday. It is a cry, a warning, an invitation to conversion and penance: Behold the wood of the Cross, on which hung the salvation of the world. But the world does not want salvation from Christ. It does not want the Cross. It does not want to recognize itself as a sinner, in its mad pride of being able to do without God and His Holy Law. For the world there is no sin, except in doing good; there is no vice, except in practicing virtue; there is no paradise, except on earth and for sale to those who can afford it; there is no hell, except for the rigid and backward. In this upside-down world, where the infernal Masonic tyranny reigns supreme, sovereignty does not belong to God or to His temporal and spiritual vicars, because the hated symbol of Redemption, the Cross on which Jesus Christ, King and High Priest, has recapitulated all things in Himself, stands out on the crowns of Kings and Popes.
The splendid antiphon that we sing during the Triduum at the end of the Canonical Hours reminds us with Saint Paul that this Redemption was accomplished in obedience: in obedience unto death, death on the Cross. But it also admonishes us that the obedience of the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity to the Eternal Father merits the Son to be exalted, so that at His Name every knee should bend, in heaven, on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father (Phil 2:10-11).
We preach Christ crucified, a scandal to the Jews, foolishness to the pagans (1 Cor 1:23). Because it is in self-humiliation and in obedience to the Divine Will that we obtain the crown of victory. And there is no Resurrection without the Passion, no reward without trial, no prize without competition. Let us not forget that the Cross is the destiny of each of us and of the Church as a whole. She, as the Mystical Body, must follow Her Master in the passio Ecclesiæ. We, as living members of the Church, must do the same in daily self-denial and in the sequela Christi.
Alter alterius onera portate (Gal 6:2), Saint Paul exhorts us: carry each other’s burdens, and so you will fulfill the law of Christ. And it is precisely Our Lord who gives us the example: in having carried the Cross that each of us would have deserved a thousand times; and in carrying our cross with us, when we would like to be the ones to choose it. If we ever deluded ourselves into thinking we could decide with which cross we should have to merit Heaven, we would soon realize that we are not capable, with our miserable strength, of facing even the most insignificant annoyance, and certainly not the trials that could await us in these troubled times. On the contrary, the cross that the Lord has chosen for us, however burdensome and difficult to carry, will always see the Divine Cyrenean at our side to help us with His Grace.
May the hour of darkness that is approaching spur us to consider the tribulations and trials that we will have to face as a crucible, from which the gold of our sanctity will emerge purified and in which the stains of our misery will be consumed. Let us therefore embrace this Holy Cross, so that it may be our sole point of reference, while the world sinks under the rubble of its deceptions. Stat Crux, dum volvitur orbis. And so may it be.

EU states are “hesitant to admit” failure in Ukraine, while the US is in a better position due to Donald Trump’s policies, the Hungarian PM has said
The West has waged a “proxy war” against Russia via Ukraine and lost it, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said.
Hungary, a member of the EU, has repeatedly criticized the bloc’s policies on the Ukraine conflict, particularly its sanctions on Moscow and weapons deliveries to Kiev.
In an interview with OT YouTube channel published on Thursday, Orban said the whole “Western world” has thrown its weight behind Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, which he described as a “proxy war.”
His assessment echoed that of Moscow, which has long characterized the hostilities as a de facto conflict with the West.
According to the Hungarian prime minister, the West has lost but “European leaders are hesitant to admit” failure. He argued that this outcome will have a big impact on the entire West, as “losing a war is a serious thing.”

Orban went on to say that European leaders are “offering Ukraine to continue the war and in return receive European Union membership.” He argued that this would be problematic as Ukraine is no longer sovereign and cannot support itself.
Regarding the US, the Hungarian prime minister said Washington is in a better position thanks to President Donald Trump’s approach, having broken with the Ukraine policies pursued by his predecessor, Joe Biden.
According to Orban, Trump “saved the US from a serious defeat.”
Speaking to Hungary’s Kossuth Radio last month, Orban described the EU’s policies on Ukraine as “rudderless.” He warned that Brussels, with its hardline position, risks becoming irrelevant as Trump actively works toward securing a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Earlier in March, Orban told the YouTube channel Patriota that the EU was feeding Kiev “empty promises” as it “doesn’t have a single penny left… [to] continue arming Ukraine, maintaining the Ukrainian army, and funding the functioning of the Ukrainian state.”
His comments came after Budapest refused to endorse a joint EU communique calling for an increase in military aid to Kiev.

Jesus was arrested late Thursday evening. The Scriptures recount,
They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together (Mark 14:53).
According to Mark’s chronology there was a sham of a trial, based on false evidence and distortions of Jesus’ teachings.
Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were seeking testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but they did not find any. For many bore false witness against Jesus, but their testimony was inconsistent. Then some men stood up and testified falsely against Him: “We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this man-made temple, and in three days I will build another that is made without hands.’” But even their testimony was inconsistent.
So the high priest stood up before them and questioned Jesus, “Have You no answer? What is it these men are testifying against You?” But Jesus remained silent and made no reply. Again the high priest questioned Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”
“I am,” said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
At this, the high priest tore his clothes and declared, “Why do we need any more witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy. What is your verdict?” And they all condemned Him as deserving of death. Then some of them began to spit on Him. They blindfolded Him, struck Him with their fists, and said to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers received Him with slaps in His face (Mark 14:53-65).
According to tradition, Jesus spent the rest of the night in the dungeon under the House of Caiaphas. It had doubled as a kind of cistern for holding rainwater.
The events of this early Friday morning are tightly packed. In the space of three or four hours, Jesus is sent to Pilate, then to Herod, then back to Pilate, questioned, condemned to die, and led out to be crucified by 9:00 AM.
The events begin around 6:00 AM:
Early in the morning, the chief priests, elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin devised a plan. They bound Jesus, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate (Mark 15:1).
Pilate is less than enthusiastic to be saddled with this interrogation, but fearing a riot if he does not, he enters into the fray. Pilate’s behavior is a portrait in vacillation. According to Luke, he first seeks to transfer the case to Herod, who is nearby in Jerusalem (See Luke 23:6-12). However, Jesus says not a word to Herod. So after making sport of Jesus, Herod sends Him right back to Pilate. In another attempt to placate the crowd and evade making a decision, Pilate presents to them what amounts to a fake Messiah, aptly named “Barabbas” (which means “son of the father”). Can Barabbas save the day? He cannot, for he is not the true “Son of the Father.” Only Jesus can deliver Pilate—or any of us, for that matter.
I will not be treating the whole trial before Pilate in today’s post. (I’ve written about it in more detail here: The Trial Before Pilate.) In the end, though Pilate concludes that Jesus is innocent of the charges, he hands Him over to be crucified. In so doing, he is likely trying to save his own career. He will not take a stand for Jesus. Rather, he sits upon the judgment seat, violates his own conscience, and condemns Jesus to death. It is about the third hour (9:00 AM).
There is some debate about the specific time of day in the various biblical accounts. Mark 15:25 says that Jesus is crucified at the third hour (9:00 AM). In John 19:14 the crucifixion is set at the sixth hour (Noon). Both Matthew 27:45 and Luke 23:44 hint at a time closer to noon in their reference to a darkness coming over the land from noon until 3:00 PM.
In considering these “issues” of the exact time of day, we ought to remember that the people of Jesus’ era did not have clocks and watches. They did not speak or think of time in the precise ways that we modern Westerners do. Time was spoken of in general ways; the mention of the third hour, or the sixth hour, or the ninth hour could include a broader swath of time relatively near that declared hour. It is a little bit like our terms “mid-morning” or “mid-afternoon,” which can refer to a period of several hours. Mark does not necessarily mean precisely at 9:00 AM nor does John mean precisely at noon.
There is a lot of overlap in references to the third hour, the sixth hour, and the ninth hour, softening the possible conflict between the accounts. The need to nail down the exact times of day of the various events says more about our modern obsession with time than it does about accounts that are close, even if not precise, descriptions of the events.
Comparing all the texts leads to a general time frame. Thus, it would seem that Jesus undergoes trials before Pilate and Herod in the early morning (somewhere between 6:00 and 9:00 AM). He is sentenced by Pilate to crucifixion somewhere in mid-morning. He is mocked and led out to be crucified in the late morning. Near noon, He is stripped of His outer garments and hung on the cross. From about noon through the early afternoon a darkness comes over the land and Jesus hangs on the cross. He dies in the midafternoon, at around 3:00 PM.
What of this darkness of some three hours? In Luke 23:44, we read, It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour (i.e., from noon until 3:00 PM).
Although this seems to describe a solar eclipse, it isn’t appropriate to insist that it was an eclipse (at least as we define the term today). Matthew, Mark, and Luke all speak to the darkness of that day using the Greek term σκότος (skotos), meaning simply “darkness.” Only Luke went on to state the reason for the darkness: the sun was darkened (Luke 23:45). He even used the Greek word ἐκλιπόντος (eklipontos), from which the word “eclipse” was derived. In Greek, however, the word eklipontos simply means “darkened,” whereas our word “eclipse” refers to a darkening as a result of the moon blocking the light of the sun. However, that is not necessarily (or even likely) what Luke meant here.
As a general rule, one should avoid applying a scientific explanation to a text when that may not have been the author’s intention. That there was darkness over the land from about noon until three is certainly attested to in the sacred texts, but the cause of that darkness is not definitively stated to be an eclipse, at least not as we use the term today. Perhaps God made use of other natural causes, such as very heavy clouds, to cause the light of the sun to dim. It is also possible that the darkness was of purely supernatural origin and was experienced only by some of those present.
Trying to explain the darkness in terms of the laws of science risks doing a disservice to the text by missing its deeper meaning: that the darkness of sin had reached its zenith. Whatever the physical mechanism of the darkness, its deepest cause was sin and evil.
Jesus said elsewhere, “This is the judgment: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil” (Jn 3:19). Referring to His passion, He also said, “Night is coming, when no one can work” (Jn 9:4). When Judas left the Last Supper to betray Jesus, John observed simply and profoundly, And it was night (Jn 13:30). Yes, a deep darkness had come upon the world.
It is simply not possible here to fully comment on all the details of the crucifixion. While they are historical incidents, they are also of deep spiritual significance. I leave the consideration of most of those details to other posts and to your reflection. Jesus speaks seven times while on the cross: He asks the Father to forgive us. He bestows mercy on the repentant thief. He gives us His mother and asks us to take her into the home of our hearts. He expresses his feelings of abandonment. He voices his thirst. He announces the completion of His mission. He commends His spirit to the Father and gives up His spirit.
The earth shakes. While earthquakes were common in the region, interpreting the quake merely in scientific terms misses its theological significance. Christ has rent the earth and descended to Sheol, there to preach to the dead. The veil in the Temple has been torn from top to bottom, giving us access to the Father. He has rent our hearts and laid bare our thoughts. This also prefigures the Last Judgment:
Death is struck, and nature quaking,
all creation is awaking,
to its judge and answer making (from the Dies Irae). It is three o’clock in the afternoon; a great silence is upon the earth. The Word of God has died in the flesh. He has gone among the dead to awaken them.

Site: 4ChristumGood Friday (by Fr. Prosper Gueranger 1870)THE VENERATION OF THE CROSS.The "Prayers" are ended. The charity and zeal of the Church have embraced the whole universe of men, invoking upon them the merciful effusion of that precious Blood, which is now flowing from the Wounds of her Crucified Lord. She turns next to her faithful Children. Filled with holy indignation at the humiliations heaped upon her Jesus, she invites us to an act of solemn reparation: it is to consist in our venerating that Cross, which our Divine Lord has borne to the summit of Calvary, and to which He is to be fastened with nails. The Cross is a stumbling-block to the Jeivs, and foolishness to the Gentiles (I. Cor. i . 23.); but to us Christians, it is the trophy of Jesus' victory, and the instrument of the world's Redemption. It is worthy of our deepest veneration, because of the honour conferred upon it by the Son of God: He consecrated it by his own Blood, he worked our salvation by its means. No time could be more appropriate than this for the honouring it with the humble tribute of our veneration. The holy ceremony of venerating the Cross on Good Friday was first instituted at Jerusalem, in the 4th century. Owing to the pious zeal of the Empress St. Helen, the True Cross had then recently been discovered, to the immense joy of the whole Church. The Faithful, as might be expected, were desirous to see the precious Relic, and, accordingly, it was exposed every Good Friday. This brought a very great number of pilgrims to Jerusalem; and yet how few, comparatively, could hope to have the happiness of such a visit, or witness the magnificent ceremony? An imitation of what was done, on this day, at Jerusalem, was a natural result of these pious desires. It was about the 7th century, that the practice of publicly venerating the Cross on Good Friday was introduced into other Churches. True, it was but an image of the True Cross that these other Churches could show to the people; but as the respect that is paid to the True Cross refers to Christ himself, the Faithful could offer Him a like homage of adoration, even though not having present before their eyes the sacred Wood which had been consecrated by the Blood of Jesus. Such was the origin of the imposing ceremony, at which holy Church now invites us to assist. The Celebrant takes off the Chasuble, which is the badge of the Priesthood; it is in order that the Reparation, which he is to be first to offer to our outraged Jesus, may be made with all possible humility. He then stands on the step near the Epistle side of the Altar, and turns his face towards the people. The Deacon takes down the Cross from the Altar, and gives it to the Celebrant, who then unveils the upper part as far as the arms; He raises it a little, and sings these words:Behold the wood of the Cross; Then he continues, joined by the Deacon and Subdeacon:on which hung the salvation of the world. The people then kneel down, and venerate the Cross, while the Choir sings these words:Come, let us adore. This first exposition, which is made at the side of the Altar, and in a low tone of voice, represents the first preaching of the Cross, that, namely, which the Apostles made, when, for fear of the Jews, they dared not to speak of the great Mystery except to the few faithful Disciples of Jesus. For the same reason, the Priest but slightly elevates the Cross. The homage here paid to it is intended as a reparation for the insults and injuries offered to our Redeemer in the house of Caiphas. The Priest then comes to the front of the step, and is thus nearer to the people. He unveils the right arm of the Cross, and holds up the holy Sign of our Redemption higher than the first time. He then sings, and on a higher note:Behold the wood of the Cross; Then he continues, joined by the Deacon and Subdeacon:on which hung the salvation of the world. The people then kneel down, and venerate the Cross, while the Choir sings these words:Come, let us adore. This second elevation of the holy Cross signifies the Apostles' extending their preaching the mystery of our Redemption to the Jews, after the descent of the Holy Ghost; by which preaching they made many thousand converts, and planted the Church in the very midst of the Synagogue. It is intended as a reparation to our Saviour, for the treatment he received in the Court of Pilate. The Priest then advances to the middle of the Altar, and, with his face still turned towards the people, he removes the veil entirely from the Cross. He elevates it more than he did the two preceding times, and triumphantly sings on a still higher note:Behold the wood of the Cross; Then he continues, joined by the Deacon and Subdeacon:on which hung the salvation of the world. The people then kneel down, and venerate the Cross, while the Choir sings these words:Come, let us adore. This third and unreserved manifestation represents the mystery of the Cross being preached to the whole earth, when the Apostles, after being rejected by the majority of the Jewish people, turned towards the Gentiles, and preached Jesus Crucified, even far beyond the limits of the Roman Empire. It is intended as a Reparation to our Lord for the outrages offered to him on Calvary. There is also another teaching embodied in this ceremony of holy Church. By this gradual unveiling of the Cross, she would express to us the contrast of the Jewish and the Christian view. The one finds nothing in Christ Crucified but shame and ignominy: the other discovers in Him the power and the wisdom of God (1. Cor. i. 24.). Honour, then, and veneration to His Cross! The veil is removed by Faith. Unveiled let it be upon our Altar, for He that died upon it is soon to triumph by a glorious Resurrection! Yea, let every Crucifix in our Church be unveiled, and every Altar beam once more with the vision of the glorious Standard! But the Church is not satisfied with showing her Children the Cross that has saved them; she would have them approach, and kiss it. The Priest leads the way. He has already taken off his Chasuble; he now takes off his shoes also, and then advances towards the place where he has put the Crucifix. He makes three genuflexions at intervals, and finally kisses the Cross. The Deacon and Subdeacon follow him, then the clergy, and lastly the people. The chants which are used during this ceremony are exceedingly fine. First of all, there are the Improperia, that is, the Reproaches made by our Saviour to the Jews. Each of the first three stanzas of this plaintive Hymn is followed by the Trisagion, or Prayer to the Thrice Holy God, Who, as Man, suffers death for us. Oh! let us fervently proclaim him to be The Holy, The Immortal! This form of prayer was used at Constantinople, so far back as the fifth Century. The Roman Church adopted it, retaining even the original Greek words, to which, however, she adds a Latin translation. The rest of this beautiful chant contains the comparison made by our Lord, between the favours he has bestowed upon the Jewish people, and the injuries He has received from them in return.

According to the Synoptic Gospels, sundown of Holy Thursday ushered in the Passover. Later on this evening, the Lord will celebrate the Passover meal with His disciples. We ought to be mindful that the unleavened bread Jesus will take in His hands is called “the bread of affliction.” Scripture says, You shall eat [the Passover] with unleavened bread, the bread of affliction—for you came out of the land of Egypt in haste—that all the days of your life you may remember the day when you came out of the land of Egypt (Dt 16:3).
Indeed, this is an evening of affliction for Jesus. Much transpires at the Last Supper that is emblematic of our human foibles and sinful tendencies, but thanks be to God, He takes this “bread of affliction” we dish out to Him and lifts it to the glory of the Sacrament of His Body and Blood.
Before being too critical of the Twelve, remember that we can be like them in many ways. Keep that in mind as you read through the commentary below; A large part of what I’ve written about the apostles applies to us as well. Indeed, they are we and we are they; and the Lord loved all of us to the end.
So on Holy Thursday let’s examine the sequence of events. It illustrates pretty well why the Lord had to die for us. We will see how earnest the Lord is about this Last Supper, how He enters it with an intense love for His disciples and a desire that they heed what He is trying to teach them. We shall also see, however, that they show forth a disastrous inattentiveness and a terrible lack of concern for the Lord.
COMING CLOUDS – Jesus knows that His hour has come; this will be His last meal. Judas has already conspired and been paid to hand Him over. Scripture says, Before the feast of Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come. He always loved those who were his own, and now he would show them the depths of his love. The devil had already induced Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, to hand him over (John 13:1). Thus, in the gathering storm Jesus plans His last meal, which will also be the first Holy Mass. He sent two of His disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him, and wherever he enters, say to the householder, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is my guest room, where I am to eat the Passover with my disciples?”’ And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us” (Mark 14:13-15).
CARING CONCERN – This last supper is obviously important to Jesus. Luke records these heartfelt words: And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I tell you I shall not eat again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God” (Luke 22:15-16). Yes, this will be a very special moment for Jesus.
COLLABORATIVE CONDESCENSION – During the meal Jesus rises and then stoops to wash the disciples’ feet. He instructs them to see in this action a model for those who would collaborate with Him in any future ministry. John records it this way: He rose from the supper and took off his outer garments. He took a towel and tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded (John 13:5).
Jesus then teaches the disciples: Do you know what I have done for you? You call me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you (John 13:12-15). Just moments from now, we will see them demonstrate a complete disregard for what Jesus has just tried to teach them.
COSTLY COMMUNION – Jesus, reclining at table, will now celebrate the Holy Eucharist for the first time—but it is to be a costly communion. He has already lost many disciples because of what He taught on the Eucharist (cf John 6:50ff). After the consecration at this Last Supper/first Mass, Jesus looks into the cup at His own blood, soon to be shed, and distributes His own body, soon to be handed over. This is no mere ritual for Him. Every priest before Jesus has offered a sacrifice distinct from himself (usually an animal, sometimes a libation), but Jesus the great High Priest will offer Himself.
CALLOUS CRIME – Back at table after having taught them that they must wash one another’s feet, Jesus suddenly becomes troubled in spirit and says, I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me (John 13:21). This causes a commotion among the apostles, who begin to ask, “Who can it be?” As the anxiety builds, Simon Peter motions to John and says, “Ask Him which one He means.” Leaning back against Jesus, John asks Him, “Lord, who is it?” Jesus responds, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon. As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. “What you are about to do, do quickly” Jesus told him (John 13:24-30).
CONFOUNDING COMPETITION – As Judas takes the morsel of bread and heads out into the night, no one even tries to stop him! Despite the fact that Jesus has clearly identified His betrayer, no one rises to block the door or even utters a word of protest. Why not? Luke supplies the answer: A dispute arose among them as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest (Luke 22:24). They should be concerned about Jesus’ welfare but instead they argue about which of them is the greatest.
How confounding! How awful! Yet is that not our history? Too often we are more concerned with our own welfare or status than with any suffering in the Body of Christ. So much that is critical remains unattended to because of this. Jesus has just finished teaching the apostles to wash one another’s feet, and the next thing you know, they’re arguing as to who among them is the greatest. Jesus patiently reminds them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you; rather let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. For which is the greater, one who sits at table, or one who serves? Is it not the one who sits at table? But I am among you as one who serves (Luke 22:25-27). Meanwhile, due to their egotistical response, Judas has escaped into the night.
CAUSTIC CONTENTIOUSNESS – Jesus continues to teach at the Last Supper. He surely wants to impress upon them His final instruction. How He must long for them to listen carefully and to internalize what He is teaching! Instead, all He gets are arguments. Both Thomas and Phillip rebuke Him. John records this outrage:
Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” But Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also; henceforth you know him and have seen him (Jn 14:1-8).
Thomas rebukes the Lord by saying, in effect, “We have no idea where you’re going; when will you show us the way?” Jesus answers, but Philip will have none of this promise to see the Father and boldly says, “Lord, show us the Father, and then we shall be satisfied.” Jesus, likely saddened by this, says to him, Have I been with you so long, and yet you do not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? (John 14:8-9) Jesus’ own apostles are being argumentative and contentious. They are caustic and seem to rebuke Him.
COMICAL CREDIBILITY GAP – Undeterred, Jesus embarks on a lengthy discourse (recorded by John) that has come to be called the priestly prayer of Jesus. At the end of it, the apostles—perhaps ironically, perhaps with sincerity—remark, Now at last you are speaking plainly, not in any figure. Now we know that you know all things, and need none to question you; by this we believe that you came from God (John 16:29-30). However, Jesus knows that their praise is hollow and will not withstand the test.
There is a quite a lack of credibility in what the apostles say; it is almost comical. Jesus replies to them, Do you now believe? The hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, every man to his home, and will leave me alone (John 16:31-32). Peter protests, saying, Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away (Matthew 26:33). Here is another almost comic lack of credibility: [Jesus says to Peter,] Truly, I say to you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times. [Still insistent, Peter replies,] “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And so said all the disciples (Matthew 26:34-35). Well, you know the story, and you know that only John made it to the cross.
CLUELESS CATNAP – They finally reach the garden and the foot of the Mount of Olives. Jesus says to Peter, James, and John: My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me (Mat 26:38). They seem oblivious to His suffering, though, and doze off. Attempts to arouse them are unsuccessful; they sleep on.
Here we are at the pivotal moment of all human history and the first clergy of the Church are sound asleep. (Things have not changed, my friends.) Indeed, many are in a state of moral, spiritual, and emotional sleep as Christ still suffers throughout the world and is conspired against. Jesus says,
Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us go. See, my betrayer is at hand” (Mat 26:45-46).
COMPASSIONATE CONSTANCY – Jesus went on and died for the likes of them and all of us. I wonder if He had this Last Supper in mind when He said to the Father, Forgive them, they know not what they do. It is almost as if He is saying, “They have absolutely no idea what they are doing or thinking, so have mercy on them, Father.”
What a grim picture the Last Supper paints of us! It’s a disaster, really, but the glory of the story and the saving grace is this: The Lord Jesus Christ went to the cross regardless. Seeing this terrible portrait, can we really doubt the Lord’s love for us?
May your Holy Thursday be blessed. Never forget what Jesus endured!

50% of respondents view the country as hostile, down from 61% in 2024, a survey by the Pew Research Center suggests
Americans are evenly divided on whether Russia is an enemy of the US, with the percentage holding that view falling to its lowest level since 2022, according to a new Pew Research Center poll released Thursday. The findings coincide with efforts by President Donald Trump’s administration to negotiate a resolution to the Ukraine conflict.
According to the poll, 50% of US adults view Russia as an enemy, down from 61% one year ago, and 64% and 70% in 2023 and 2022, respectively. Another 38% describe Russia as a competitor, and 9% consider it a partner.
The poll also indicated a pronounced partisan gap on the topic, with Democrats more likely to view Russia unfavorably. While 62% of Democrats say Russia is an enemy, only 40% of Republicans agree. Among Republicans, 45% say Russia is more of a competitor.
The survey suggests that 85% of Americans see Russia very or somewhat unfavorably. Just 13% say they view the country favorably.

The poll surveyed 3,605 US adults between March 24 and March 30, shortly after a phone call between President Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, on resolving the Ukraine conflict.
While both sides have praised the peace process, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has acknowledged that the talks over Ukraine are “difficult.” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has suggested that Washington could withdraw from peace negotiations if no progress is made within the coming days.

On Friday, Bloomberg reported that the US had presented its allies with a peace plan that would see the easing of sanctions against Russia, while eliminating Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO, one of Moscow’s key demands. Former Ukrainian territories that voted overwhelmingly to join Russia would reportedly remain under Moscow’s control.
Ukraine, however, has repeatedly rejected the idea of making any territorial concessions to Russia.

The US-led military bloc has reportedly adjusted wording related to gender and diversity, equity, and inclusion in new legislation, to appease US President Donald Trump
NATO staff are softening language related to climate, gender, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to avoid a potential backlash from the administration of US President Donald Trump, Politico has reported, citing sources familiar with the situation.
Phrases concerning climate, as well as gender diversity and security, have been reworded in new NATO legislation drafted by its committees and working groups, using language deemed more palatable to Washington, the outlet said on Thursday.
The Trump administration took sweeping action aimed at dismantling gender and DEI programs shortly after Trump assumed office in January. The new administration is working to cut funding for universities and dismantle federal programs that include DEI practices. It is also carrying out a purge within the Pentagon to eliminate these programs.
”Everyone sees on the news where the Trump admin stands; you don’t want to do anything that shoots yourself in the foot,” one NATO official told Politico.
”Green technologies” have reportedly been replaced with “innovative technologies,” while “climate” has been described as an “operational environment,” another official said.
NATO officials are steering clear of any language referencing “gender” or “women, peace, and security” in an effort to secure approval from all 32 member countries, including the US, the outlet said.

”Everyone knows that the worst thing you can do is present it as a diversity issue,” one of the officials said. “It’s not a woke agenda, it’s part of a military agenda, and now more people are pricking up their ears to make sure it is spoken about in military terms.”
The fight against “woke policies,” such as the promotion of gender reassignment treatment among minors, was a key part of Trump’s presidential campaign. He has signed multiple executive orders rolling back DEI initiatives since taking office.
Trump has also consistently criticized NATO countries, accusing them of “freeloading” on US military support. He has pushed for members to increase their defense spending target from the current 2% of GDP to 5%.

On Tuesday, the Trump administration unveiled a plan to slash the State Department’s budget by nearly 50%, a reduction that would deeply affect contributions to NATO’s internal operations, the UN, and roughly 20 other international bodies. The proposal, put forward by the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, seeks to reduce combined funding for the State Department and USAID from $54.4 billion to $28.4 billion for the next fiscal year.
Among the most significant changes is the proposed elimination of financial support for nearly all international organizations, including the UN and NATO headquarters.

The Agony of Jesus Christ at Gethsemane is noteworthy for its intensity. I’ve always believed that the intensity of the terror was not driven primarily by thoughts of His impending Passion and death, for He certainly was no coward, but rather by the knowledge that His sacrifice would be wasted by a multitude through hatred and indifference. His desire for reciprocation of the deep personal love He has for each of us was/is so intense, that the sense of loss over His beloved but damned sons and daughters caused his earthly physical body to sweat blood (Luke 22:44). His spoken desire of “let this chalice pass” in Matt 26:39,42 could be referring to the Crucifixion, as tradition holds, but it seems to me there is something more. After all, God willed for the world to be reconciled to himself through this very sacrifice, and Jesus IS God. The will of Jesus, in both His divine nature and His human nature, united in the Hypostatic Union, were never at odds with God the Father: For He and His Father are of the same Essence.
Just prior to this, upon entering the garden, He said, “My soul is sorrowful even unto death.” (Matt 26:38) Is He sorrowful because He is about to ransom humanity through His Cross and Resurrection? Or is He sorrowful because so many would choose to ignore it? His terror and pain, it seems to me, is out of His love for those who would be lost; lost loves, so to speak, in spite of His own unyielding love and sacrifice. I’m not a scripture scholar, but it seems worth meditating on, for the sake of our own souls.
A great exercise on Good Friday is to pick a Gospel and read it all the way through. It really doesn’t take that long. I am going to leave you with the seventh chapter of Matthew, the third part of the Sermon on the Mount.
Remember that the Sermon on the Mount takes place at the very beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. After the infancy narrative ends with chapter two, the introduction of John the Baptist and the baptism of the Lord in chapter three, and the temptation in the desert at the beginning of chapter four, He gets right down to business. Upon hearing of John’s death, Jesus immediately withdrew to Capernaum to begin the Galilean Ministry, as foretold in Isaiah. Preaching His message of repentance (4:17), He chose his first disciples (4:18-22), and then began drawing large crowds (4:23-25), primarily through working miracles.
Now that He had everyone’s attention, it was time for the big reveal. The Sermon on the Mount begins with chapters five and six forming a sort of catechism, and the central theme is something like, “You all think you know what’s what? Well, I’m here to take it up a notch.” He goes on to explain a litany of sinful behavior, and how we’re so much more wretched then we even knew. But then we get to chapter seven, where He offers hope, through repentance, prayer, obedience, and love. He wants to be loved.
Enter ye in at the narrow gate, my friends. Blessed Pascal Triduum to all.
The Holy Gospel of St. Matthew, Chapter 7: The third part of the Sermon on the Mount:
[1] Judge not, that you may not be judged, [2] For with what judgment you judge, you shall be judged: and with what measure you mete, it shall be measured to you again. [3] And why seest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye; and seest not the beam that is in thy own eye? [4] Or how sayest thou to thy brother: Let me cast the mote out of thy eye; and behold a beam is in thy own eye? [5] Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam in thy own eye, and then shalt thou see to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.
[6] Give not that which is holy to dogs; neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest perhaps they trample them under their feet, and turning upon you, they tear you. [7] Ask, and it shall be given you: seek, and you shall find: knock, and it shall be opened to you. [8] For every one that asketh, receiveth: and he that seeketh, findeth: and to him that knocketh, it shall be opened. [9]Or what man is there among you, of whom if his son shall ask bread, will he reach him a stone? [10] Or if he shall ask him a fish, will he reach him a serpent?
[11] If you then being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children: how much more will your Father who is in heaven, give good things to them that ask him? [12] All things therefore whatsoever you would that men should do to you, do you also to them. For this is the law and the prophets. [13] Enter ye in at the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there are who go in thereat. [14] How narrow is the gate, and strait is the way that leadeth to life: and few there are that find it! [15] Beware of false prophets, who come to you in the clothing of sheep, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
[16] By their fruits you shall know them. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? [17] Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit, and the evil tree bringeth forth evil fruit. [18] A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can an evil tree bring forth good fruit. [19] Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit, shall be cut down, and shall be cast into the fire. [20] Wherefore by their fruits you shall know them.
[21] Not every one that saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven: but he that doth the will of my Father who is in heaven, he shall enter into the kingdom of heaven. [22] Many will say to me in that day: Lord, Lord, have not we prophesied in thy name, and cast out devils in thy name, and done many miracles in thy name? [23] And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity. [24] Every one therefore that heareth these my words, and doth them, shall be likened to a wise man that built his house upon a rock, [25] And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and they beat upon that house, and it fell not, for it was founded on a rock.
[26] And every one that heareth these my words, and doth them not, shall be like a foolish man that built his house upon the sand, [27] And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and they beat upon that house, and it fell, and great was the fall thereof. [28] And it came to pass when Jesus had fully ended these words, the people were in admiration at his doctrine.[29] For he was teaching them as one having power, and not as the scribes and Pharisees.
