The words scandal and Cardinal Dolan seem to go hand in hand, but at least he seems to defend some Church teaching, although in a round-about-way, although predictably only the scandalous comments make the headlines, and he really should know better.

Even in today's permissive societies, there are still a few things which the state can crack down pretty hard on, with tax evasion seemingly at the top of the list. It reminds me of the German bishops, who it seems will tolerate all heresy and apostasy so long as the church tax is paid. Also alarming is the sort of class-hatred exhibited by the commenters on the piece, the sort of us-against-them which both politicians and churchmen have utilised to chreate a society of mistrust and one in which people are keen to blame the rich for all the faults instead of taking a hard look at their own sinfulness - even in economic matters.

There is a natural revulsion to rape in most people, one which might be wiped out if we have more of these kinds of ludicrous cases which cannot count as rape under any reasonable person's judgment. It is obvious that the revulsion did not come about in a hook-up culture, and I wonder how long it will take before rape is seen as casual.
