Vitalik Buterin Says OpenAI's GPT-4 Has Passed The 'Turing Test'

Authored by Tristan Greene via CoinTelegraph.com,

OpenAI’s GPT-4, a generative artificial intelligence (AI) model, has passed the Turing test, according to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.

The Turing test is a nebulous benchmark for AI systems purported to determine how human-like a conversational model is. The term was coined on account of famed mathematician Alan Turing who proposed the test in 1950.

According to Turing, at the time, an AI system capable of generating text that fools humans into thinking they’re having a conversation with another human would demonstrate the capacity for “thought.”

Nearly 75 years later, the person largely credited with conceiving the world’s second most popular cryptocurrency has interpreted recent preprint research out of the University of California San Diego as indicating that a production model has finally passed the Turing test.

    Source: Vitalik Buterin

Researchers at the University of California San Diego recently published a preprint paper titled “People cannot distinguish GPT-4 from a human in a Turing test.” In it, they had approximately 500 human test subjects interact with humans and AI models in a blind test to determine whether they could figure out which was which.

According to the research, humans mistakenly determined that GPT-4 was a “human” 56% of the time. This means that a machine fooled humans into thinking it was one of them more often than not.

    Vitalik Buterin’s take

According to Buterin, an AI system capable of fooling more than half of the humans it interacts with qualifies as passing the Turing test.

    Buterin added:

“It means people’s ability to tell if it’s a human or a bot is basically a coin flip!”

Buterin qualified his statement by saying, “Ok not quite, because humans get guessed as humans 66% of the time vs 54% for bots, but a 12% difference is tiny; in any real-world setting that basically counts as passing.”

He also later added, in response to commentary on his original cast, that the Turing test is “by far the single most famous socially accepted milestone for ‘AI is serious shit now’. So it’s good to remind ourselves that the milestone has now been crossed.”

    The Turing test

Artificial general intelligence (AGI) and the Turing test are not necessarily related, despite the two terminologies often being conflated. Turing formulated his test based on his mathematical acumen and predicted a scenario where AI could fool humans into thinking it was one of them through conversation.

It bears mention that the Turing test is an ephemeral construct with no true benchmark or technical basis. There is no scientific consensus as to whether machines are capable of “thought” as living organisms are or as to how such a feat would be measured. Simply put, AGI or an AI’s ability to “think” isn’t currently measurable or defined by the scientific or engineering communities.

Turing made his conceptual predictions long before the advent of token-based artificial intelligence systems and the onset of generative adversarial networks, the precursor to today’s generative AI systems.

    Artificial general intelligence

Complicating matters further is the idea of AGI, which is often associated with the Turing test. In scientific parlance, a “general intelligence” is one that should be capable of any intelligence-based feat. This precludes humans, as no person has shown “general” capabilities across the spectrum of human intellectual endeavor. Thus, it follows that an “artificial general intelligence” would feature thought capabilities far beyond that of any known human.

That being said, it’s clear that GPT-4 doesn’t fit the bill of true “general intelligence” in the strictly scientific sense. However, that hasn’t stopped denizens of the AI community from using the term “AGI” to indicate any AI system capable of fooling a significant number of humans.

In the current culture, it’s typical to see terms and phrases such as “AGI,” “humanlike,” and “passes the Turing test” to refer to any AI system that outputs content comparable to the content produced by humans.

Netanyahu Could Fire Defense Chief As Public Spat Erupts Over Gaza 'Day After'

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is at odds with his own defense minister Yoav Gallant after Gallant said in a Wednesday televised address that the Israeli leader must take "tough decisions" on Gaza's 'day after' the war ends. Gallant came out very strongly against any scenario that leaves Israel in charge of overseeing the Gaza Strip. He called for advancing non-Hamas Palestinian governance, which would of course mean the Palestinian Authority (PA, which is made up primarily of Fatah), along with international backing.

Times of Israel highlighted that "The public comments, seen as the most direct political challenge to Netanyahu from within his government since the start of the war, sparked an angry backlash among members of the coalition, who urged Netanyahu to fire the defense minister."

What made matters worse is that just a few hours prior to Gallant issuing his direct challenge, Netanyahu asserted publicly that any discussions of the "day after" Hamas in Gaza are meaningless until the terror group is defeated.

In an explosive speech on Wednesday, Gallant stated that he will not consent to Israeli civil or military governance of Gaza, and that governance by non-Hamas Palestinian entities, accompanied by international actors, is in Israel's interest. The newspaper report claims that Gallant's plan, backed by the defense establishment, is to provide such groups with guns, which will be electronically monitored by Israel to prevent them being used by Hamas, and will be part of an overall international effort to help govern the Strip led by Arab nations and backed by the US.

Former Facebook And Nike DEI Manager Gets 5 Years For Embezzling $5 Million To Fund Luxury Lifestyle

A former diversity program manager at Facebook and Nike has been sentenced to five years in prison for stealing more than $5 million from Facebook and Nike while working as a DEI executive.

Barbara Furlow-Smiles has been accused of " an elaborate scheme involving fraudulent vendors, fictitious paperwork, and cash kickbacks", a press release from the Department of Justice said this week.

U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan commented: “Furlow-Smiles shamelessly violated her position of trust as a DEI executive at Facebook to steal millions from the company utilizing a scheme involving fraudulent vendors, fake invoices, and cash kickbacks.”

“After being terminated from Facebook, she brazenly continued the fraud as a DEI leader at Nike, where she stole another six-figure sum from their diversity program. Her prison sentence reflects the consequences of her decision to orchestrate an intricate scheme to defraud two of her employers for personal profit,” he added.

Keri Farley, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta added: “As Lead Strategist at Facebook, Furlow-Smiles’ employer put an extreme amount of trust in her, only to have that trust completely violated.”

Farley continued: “After she was fired, she carelessly continued her fraudulent schemes at Nike, thinking she was untouchable. As a result, she not only threw away a lucrative career, but will serve time behind bars for her excessive greed.”

The DOJ commented in their release that Furlow-Smiles served as Lead Strategist and Global Head of Employee Resource Groups and Diversity Engagement at Facebook (now Meta) from January 2017 to September 2021. According to U.S. Attorney Buchanan, Furlow-Smiles misused her position to defraud Facebook by making payments for services never rendered and directing recipients to kick back the money to her.

She linked PayPal, Venmo, and Cash App accounts to her Facebook credit cards to pay associates for nonexistent services, then submitted false expense reports to hide the fraud. The kickbacks were often returned to her in cash or through account transfers, with some payments concealed in packages sent by mail.

Additionally, Furlow-Smiles onboarded vendors owned by friends and associates, approved fraudulent invoices, and received kickbacks from these payments. She recruited numerous individuals, including friends, relatives, and former interns, to participate in the scheme.

After leaving Facebook, Furlow-Smiles worked at Nike as Senior Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion from November 2021 to February 2023, where she was responsible for DEI initiatives and events, including a Juneteenth event in New York.

"In total, Furlow-Smiles stole more than $4.9 million from Facebook and over $120,000 from Nike based on fictitious charges and fraudulent invoices," the DOJ wrote. "She used the money to fund a luxury lifestyle in California, Georgia, and Oregon."

Vivek: Democrats Are Giving Biden One Last Chance With Debate

Authored by Steve Watson via Modernity.news,

Vivek Ramaswamy believes that the Democrats are allowing Joe Biden one last “Hail Mary” by allowing him to participate in a debate against Donald Trump, but that if he fails, as he inevitably will, they will swap him out for a new candidate.

During a Fox News interview, Vivek, who has access within the Trump camp, says he believes the sudden decision to have Biden debate is a “setup.”

On one hand CNN is hosting it, they’re going to prop up Biden, try to make him look as good as possible. But also note this is the earliest Presidential debate in recorded American history, in June. Why is that?” Vivek stated.

“This is a Hail Mary attempt for Biden as his numbers are tanking,” Ramaswamy further urged, adding “this is their last chance to give him a desperate attempt to succeed, and if he doesn’t, as I expect will be the case, that gives them time to swap out somebody else for the nomination.”

“It’s part of a of a broader plot for a replacement plan they’ve been having in the works,” Vivek concluded.

    Watch:

Here’s why the Democrats suddenly let Biden debate Trump: it’s a set-up. It’s their final Hail Mary for Biden. If that fails, they still have enough time to swap Biden out for a new nominee. That’s why it’s in June, the *earliest-ever* presidential TV debate in history. It’s… pic.twitter.com/zCsyXkags9

    — Vivek Ramaswamy (@VivekGRamaswamy) May 17, 2024

As we highlighted yesterday, the Biden campaign issued a list of conditions for the debate, and then accused Trump of “playing games” by asking for more debates.

One of the Biden conditions is that RFK Jr is not allowed to take part.

Trump, however, says he is happy for Kennedy to be involved, so long as he meets the support criteria to take part.

Trump told Scripps News on Thursday “I would have no problem if he got whatever the threshold is,” adding “But he’s very low and seems to be heading in the other direction, in the wrong direction.”

Trump followed up with a post stating that he believes Biden doesn’t want RFK in the debate because he is “sharper and far more intelligent than Joe.”

Crooked Joe Biden does not want RFK Jr. in the debates because Junior’ is far left him and they would be debating over the same territory, like ridiculous Open Borders and the Green New Scam, both of which are killing our Country. He’s also sharper and far more intelligent than… pic.twitter.com/siZWcu08VD

    — Donald J. Trump Posts From His Truth Social (@TrumpDailyPosts) May 16, 2024

Kennedy himself said he will “meet the criteria,” and looks forward to taking part.

I’m happy to report that I will meet the criteria to participate in the @CNN debate before the June 20 deadline. I look forward to holding Presidents Biden and Trump accountable for their records in Atlanta on June 27 to give Americans the debate they deserve. #KennedyShanahan24

    — Robert F. Kennedy Jr (@RobertKennedyJr) May 15, 2024

CNN has stated that in order to take part in the debate, candidates must receive at least 15% support in four polls and appear on enough state ballots to reach 270 Electoral College votes.

Kennedy’s campaign claims to be officially on the ballot in six states and expects to qualify for eight more.

RFK also accused Trump and Biden of “trying to exclude me,” which he says “undermines democracy.”

Presidents Trump and Biden are colluding to lock America into a head-to-head match-up that 70% say they do not want.

They are trying to exclude me from their debate because they are afraid I would win. Keeping viable candidates off the debate stage undermines democracy.…

Doctors in the Netherlands will euthanize a Dutch woman just because she has autism and deals with mental health issues as a result.

Zoraya ter Beek, a 28-year-old woman dealing with depressing, ahs been granted the right to be killed in an assisted suicide. She is scheduled to be euthanized before the end of the month.

Ter Beek, who lives in a little Dutch town near the German border, once had ambitions to become a psychiatrist, but she was never able t complete her education because of her mental health condition. She said she was hobbled by her depression and autism and borderline personality disorder. Now she was tired of living—despite, she said, being in love with her boyfriend, a 40-year-old IT programmer, and living in a nice house with their two cats.

The woman says her psychologist told her they had tried everything to treat her depression, saying that “there’s nothing more we can do for you. It’s never gonna get any better.”

At that point, she said, she decided to die. “I was always very clear that if it doesn’t get better, I can’t do this anymore.”

Unfortunately, ter Beek has not connected with a Christian faith before making the decision — a faith that could give her the hope she needs.

“I’m a little afraid of dying, because it’s the ultimate unknown,” she said. “We don’t really know what’s next—or is there nothing? That’s the scary part.”

Her case is sadly not unique. The 2023 Netherlands euthanasia report was recently released indicating a 20% increase in euthanasia deaths for mental illness.

A leading irish psychologist has spoken out against euthanizing people like ter Beek.

Maria Maynes was published by RIPT on April 9, 2024 concerning the debate to legalize euthanasia in Ireland. Maynes interviewed Consultant psychiatrist, Professor Patricia Casey, a specialist in Adult Psychiatry. Maynes reportes:

recent cases unfolding worldwide involving physically healthy young people should provide evidence to Irish lawmakers that “the slippery slope exists,” as she expressed particular concern about those with autism choosing assisted suicide or euthanasia.

Last month, this publication also reported on the Canadian case of an unnamed 27-year-old woman, who was also autistic, and had chosen to die by physician assisted suicide. While the father of the unnamed woman tried to intervene through court action, arguing that she did not have the ability to consent to the death under Canada’s MAiD programme, his intervention was unsuccessful.

There have also been cases in Belgium, where Asperger’s (now subsumed under the autistic spectrum) is among the most common conditions for which Belgians seek euthanasia on mental health grounds, alongside personality disorders and depression.

REACH PRO-LIFE PEOPLE WORLDWIDE! Advertise with LifeNews to reach hundreds of thousands of pro-life readers every week. Contact us today.

    Maynes quoted Casey as stating:

“There is a danger that when young, autistic people see a problem that they will look for what they see is a simple solution, or a trendy solution,” she said.

    Casey also stated:

“I was struck by the photograph of 28-year-old Zoraya ter Beek in the Netherlands, who was pictured surreally embraced in the arms of her boyfriend while announcing that she was due to die on May 28th. This photograph conceals the turmoil and nihilism behind her decision and may well be used in the future to promote assisted dying as a calming answer to one’s problems.”

Professor Casey compares the issue to the romanticizing of suicide that was successfully countered by national campaigns. Professor Casey fears that the same type of romanticizing of death by euthanasia will also occur.

Any possibility of a military escalation over the self-governing island should be excluded, the bloc’s foreign policy chief has said

The EU should be firm about ensuring that a military conflict doesn’t break out over Taiwan, which it considers part of a “one single China,” the bloc’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has said.

Tensions around the self-governing island, which Beijing considers to be an inalienable part of China, have been rising as the US maintains unofficial ties with the Taiwanese government and supplies it with defensive weapons.

Speaking to Foreign Policy magazine during a trip to California this week to meet tech leaders and state officials, Borrell touched on a number of issues, including tech regulation, EU-US relations, China, and geopolitical conflicts, as well as the EU’s position on Taiwan and a potential military conflict.

“We keep saying the same thing: We believe that we have to decrease tensions, we have to respect the statute of war, and we have to exclude any possibility of a military solution to the problem,” Borrell told the outlet.

“Our fixed position is we don’t recognize the statehood of Taiwan and we will not do it. It’s one single China. It means that we are not going to recognize the statehood of Taiwan; we will have economic and cultural relations with this territory without recognition of statehood,” he said.

He added that the EU calls on all nations “to understand that there is not a military solution to this problem.”

Borrell has repeatedly stated that Taiwan is “absolutely crucial” for the EU economically, particularly due to its strategic role in the production of the most advanced semiconductors.

In April 2023, he suggested that European navies should patrol the disputed Taiwan Strait “to show Europe’s commitment to freedom of navigation.” Those comments followed Chinese military exercises around Taiwan, during which Beijing simulated targeted strikes and a blockade of the island following a meeting between the Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and the US House speaker at the time, Kevin McCarthy.

Read more Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin. US ‘shooting itself in the foot’ by arming Taiwan – Beijing

Taiwan was the last refuge of nationalist forces during the Chinese civil war of the 1940s, and has since remained de facto independent from Beijing and allied with Washington.

Under the ‘One China’ policy, which forms the core of the Chinese government’s relationship with Taiwan, Beijing seeks the peaceful reintegration of the island and the prevention of any attempt to declare it a sovereign nation, threatening to use military force if necessary.

Beijing has insisted that Taiwan’s status is a domestic issue and has urged foreign governments not to interfere. Chinese officials have criticized Washington for repeatedly expressing support for the Taiwanese government and concluding defense contracts with the island’s military.

Last month, the US approved a multibillion-dollar foreign aid package of which over $8 billion was designated for Taiwan to “counter communist China and ensure a strong deterrence in the region.”

New Hampshire's 2024 assisted suicide bill is dead (Link)

The New Hampshire Senate killed Assisted Suicide Bill HB 1283 by a vote of 17 to 7 by referring it to an interim study on the bill.

Sruthi Gopalakrishnan reported on May 16, 2024 for the Concord Monitor that:

New Hampshire’s bill also did not have a residency restriction, which was a point of worry for senators who voted against the bill during the Senate session.

“We’ve discussed in this chamber passing legislation to prevent us from becoming magnets for crime, drugs, human trafficking and more,” said Sen. Regina Birdsell, asking the Senate to refer it to an interim study. “This bill because it has no residency requirements would make our state a magnet for a much more tragic purpose.”

The question of whether this law is assisted suicide or a humane way to die has dominated the debate in New Hampshire for the past few months and this was evident in Thursday’s senate session.Gopalakrishnan reported that Canada's experience affected the New Hampshire debate:
Other concerns about the bill stem from Canada’s decision to extend medical aid in dying to even individuals without a terminal illness. While New Hampshire’s legislation imposes safeguards, includes provisions for self-administration of medication to prevent potential abuse among the disabled population, critics fear future expansions. They worry that similar to developments in Canada, eligibility criteria could be broadened beyond the original scope. The assisted suicide lobby will try again next year. Gopalakrishnan reports
Although medical aid in dying won’t reach the governor’s desk this year, advocates emphasize that the push to legalize it in New Hampshire will persist, asserting that the decision to conclude one’s life with dignity should remain within the individual’s control.

The President of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, Gordon Friesen, sent members of New Hampshire's Senate his article titled: A call to defeat New Hampshire assisted suicide House Bill 1283 (Link).

Unless there are special cases decided by the pontiff, the Church will no longer issue declarations on the supernatural nature of such phenomena, but will only issue a non-committal recognition of their pastoral value when there are no mystifications. These phenomena are associated with many shrines in Asia.

Doctor Fined For Prescribing Ivermectin Against COVID-19

Authored by Zachary Stieber via The Epoch Times,

A doctor in Washington state has been fined for prescribing ivermectin against COVID-19. He must also take continuing education classes, according to newly filed documents.

Dr. Wei-Hsung Lin must pay $5,000, according to an order signed by the Washington Medical Commission on May 2.

Ivermectin is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for treating several conditions, including parasitic worms. Prescribing medicine for unapproved usage is common in the United States, but administration officials have warned against prescribing and using ivermectin as a COVID-19 treatment. Regulators have pointed to a database of clinical trials, some of which found ivermectin did not confer a benefit against COVID-19 and some of which found ivermectin was beneficial against the illness.

Dr. Lin, who also signed the order, admitted to prescribing ivermectin to five people without detailing how the prescriptions were off-label, the risks involved, and alternative treatments.

One patient, a 71-year-old female, tested positive for COVID-19 at the emergency room on June 23, 2021. She saw Dr. Lin in a telemedicine visit the following day. He prescribed her 12 milligrams of ivermectin daily for five days after stating that a “substantial body of literature” showed ivermectin was “effective as a one-day therapy or five-day therapy.”

The woman went back to the hospital after taking ivermectin for four days but not seeing improvement. She was ultimately discharged and recovered.

In another case, Dr. Lin prescribed ivermectin to a 69-year-old male for COVID-19. Dr. Lin prescribed extra ivermectin because the man’s wife also had COVID-19. Neither the husband nor wife ended up taking the ivermectin because they went online and “observed the warnings about ivermectin for COVID-19 as well as the possible negative effects for those with heart conditions,” the order states.

Dr. Lin’s treatment was “below standard of care” in part because he did not discuss alternative treatments, according to the document. No alternatives are listed in the document. In 2021, remdesivir was the primary government-approved treatment for some COVID-19 patients.

Authorities also faulted Dr. Lin for not discussing COVID-19 vaccines with his patients.

According to the order, Dr. Lin’s actions constituted unprofessional conduct, defined in state law as “any act involving moral turpitude, dishonesty, or corruption relating to the practice of the person’s profession, whether the act constitutes a crime or not.”

The order prohibits Dr. Lin from prescribing ivermectin off-label to patients in Washington state and from prescribing any medication or providing care for patients without first establishing a doctor-patient relationship.

It also requires him to review the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and UpToDate websites for current COVID-19 guidelines, take continuing medical education classes on preventing, treating, and managing COVID-19 and establishing a doctor-patient relationship, and write two papers of at least 1,000 words describing what he learned from the websites and classes.

The commission or its designee is also going to make annual compliance visits, including reviewing a random selection of records, and says Dr. Lin must appear within 12 months, and subsequently on an annual basis, at a date and location determined by the commission as part of compliance oversight.

Dr. Jane Orient, executive director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, said that the conditions are “extremely onerous” and require work that would “enormously increase the burden of practice and probably drive most physicians out of practice altogether.”

“Ivermectin is an extremely safe drug—much safer than most drugs physicians prescribe without all the ‘informed consent’ discussions demanded here,” Dr. Orient told The Epoch Times in an email.

“As to informing patients of alternatives, the reasons patients were calling this doctor was likely that no alternatives were available. It was ‘isolate and go to ER if you get worse.’”

She recommended doctors avoid Washington state if they’re able.

The Washington Medical Commission did not return an inquiry.

Dr. Lin is employed by the Kadlec Regional Medical Center clinic in Richland.

“After being made aware of an alleged violation by one of our providers, we fully cooperated with the Washington State Department of Health throughout their investigation. While Kadlec does not recommend or allow ivermectin for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19, we respect the rights of patients and physicians to discuss and explore all available treatment options, based on patients’ unique health and medical situations,” a spokesperson for Kadlec told The Epoch Times in an email.

“We remain dedicated to providing high-quality care for all patients we serve, and we are pleased this matter has been resolved.”

If Dr. Lin had contested the allegations, the commission would have heard arguments and then ruled, potentially suspending his license. The commission has already ruled against several doctors who prescribed ivermectin for COVID-19, most recently forbidding pathologist Dr. Ryan Cole from practicing medicine in the state for five years.

“Dr. Lin was willing to fight this all the way but when we looked the risk-reward matrix we felt—and he felt—it was in his best interest to go ahead and settle,” Pete Serrano, an attorney with the Silent Majority Foundation representing Dr. Lin, told The Epoch Times.

“He was ready to kind of close the chapter and move on with his life,” Mr. Serrano added later.

Dr. Lin was initially facing a $25,000 fine and harsher repercussions but negotiations on the settlement ended up reducing some of the penalties.

Dr. Lin can petition to terminate the order in three years.

Some US defense contractors are reportedly already there, repairing weapons provided to Kiev

Several US allies within NATO are “inching closer” to sending soldiers into Ukraine to train its armed forces, the New York Times has reported. Some American military contractors are already on the ground to repair US-supplied weapons systems.

Facing troop shortages, the government in Kiev has asked the US and NATO to “help train 150,000 new recruits” inside Ukraine, so they could be sent to the front faster, according to the American outlet.

The move “would be another blurring of a previous red line” and could draw the US and the EU “more directly into the war,” the Times noted. Although the White House has publicly opposed sending instructors, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff thinks it is inevitable.

“We’ll get there eventually, over time,” General Charles Q. Brown Jr. told reporters on Thursday, while traveling to Brussels.

One problem with deploying NATO instructors to Ukraine would be having to shift already scarce air defenses away from the battlefield in order to protect them from Russian air and missile strikes, the Times noted. According to the outlet, the US would be obligated to defend any NATO instructors inside Ukraine from attack, “potentially dragging America into the war.”

Read more Ukrainian soldiers rest during a training exercise. Ukraine situation ‘incredibly dire’ – Washington

French President Emmanuel Macron first raised the issue of sending NATO troops to Ukraine back in February, as an idea that should not be ruled out. Estonia and Lithuania have since expressed support for either sending instructors or support troops, to free up Ukrainian soldiers for combat duty.

The White House is “adamant” that it will not put American troops on the ground in Ukraine – including instructors – and has urged NATO allies not to do it either, an anonymous White House official told the Times.

Meanwhile, Britain, France and Germany are working on a plan to send contractors to maintain weapons in the combat zone, the US outlet has revealed. Though the US has banned defense contractors from going to Ukraine, “a small number have already been allowed in, under State Department authority, to work on specific weapons systems like Patriot air defenses,” the Times noted.

American instructors used to be part of a NATO training program in Yavorov, in western Ukraine, but were withdrawn in early 2022. Russia has since struck the facility with missiles multiple times.

NATO has trained tens of thousands of Ukrainian troops in Germany, Poland, the UK and elsewhere. Western tactics have proven less than adequate during the summer 2023 offensive, however. The Times has described the Ukrainian battlefield as “far different and more intense than what American forces have fought on in recent years.”

READ MORE: Here’s why Russia’s Kharkov offensive is far more than just a military setback for Kiev

According to anonymous US military officials, training inside Ukraine would allow American instructors “to more quickly gather information about the innovations occurring on the Ukrainian front lines, potentially allowing them to adapt their training.”

Earlier this week, British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps said that “moving training closer” to Ukraine would make sense, but added that London did not want to put British troops on the ground.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue wrote the following letter today to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell regarding the controversy over Harrison Butker. Please contact his communications chief: Brian.McCarthy@nfl.com

    May 17, 2024

    Mr. Roger Goodell, Commissioner
    National Football League
    345 Park Avenue
    NY NY 10154

    Dear Mr. Goodell:

NFL senior vice president Jonathan Beane addressed the commencement speech by Kansas City Chiefs’ player Harrison Butker as follows: “Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity. His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”

So by stigmatizing Butker—in effect excluding him—for defending Catholic moral theology, you are flexing your inclusion muscles? Nice to know what you think about Catholicism—that is the real issue. Too bad you couldn’t cite a single sentence that was objectionable.

Your credibility has long been shot. I will do what you cannot do—I will be specific in my criticisms of the NFL.

Follow LifeNews.com on Instagram for pro-life pictures and videos.

I wrote to you on October 11, 2011 about your decision to invite Madonna to perform at the 2012 Super Bowl. A week earlier I spelled out my concerns (which I repeated in December). Here is what I said.

In 2004, the NFL disinvited ‘N Sync’s JC Chasez from performing during the halftime of the Pro Bowl game. It objected to the sexist lyrics of his songs. This led me to draw a comparison with the NFL’s handling of Madonna, citing her frequent “offensive lyrics, lewd behavior and misappropriation of sacred symbols.” I also mentioned her repeated mocking of “the heart and soul of Christianity: Jesus, Our Blessed Mother, the Eucharist and the Crucifixion.” But none of that bothered the NFL one bit. So revealing.

In 2013, when asked about the propriety of the Washington NFL team using the name “Redskins,” you said, “If one person is offended, we have to listen.” But you didn’t listen when Catholics flooded your office with complaints following my statement on Madonna.

A lot more than one person was offended in 2018 when you announced a long-term extension of your partnership with Nike. Nike uses slave labor in China, exploiting the Uyghurs, a Muslim minority. Yet in 2019 you lauded your relationship with Communist China.

Anti-Catholicism doesn’t bother you, but racism does. In 2022 you authorized a host of anti-racism slogans to appear on the players’ apparel. If you were consistent you would condemn both expressions of bigotry, but you are not. And you certainly wouldn’t approve slogans like “End Abortion” to appear on players’ jerseys.

Earlier this year the NFL paired with an anti-Catholic organization, GLAAD, during the Super Bowl. You celebrated “A Night of Pride with GLAAD.” This is the same organization that heralded the decision of the Los Angeles Dodgers to honor a viciously anti-Catholic group, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, at its June 16, 2023 game.

There is no question that you would veto any decision to give a platform to a group that celebrates gay bashing. But when it comes to allowing a group that bashes Catholics, you are okay with it.

Harrison Butker speaks for millions of Americans, not all of whom are Catholic. The contempt you have shown for him, Benedictine College and Catholicism is repugnant. You are also a classic phony.

    Sincerely,

    William Donohue, Ph.D.
    President

The Justice Department’s Kristen Clarke issued a statement this week celebrating news that seven pro-life activists would spend time in prison for attempting to stop abortions from taking place.

Clarke, who heads the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division and is responsible for enforcing the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act, painted the pro-life activists as violent radicals in her remarks: “Violence has no place in our national discourse on reproductive health.”

The activists’ actions were non-violent, and the DOJ’s release on the matter even notes that they “passively” resisted “their anticipated arrests.”

“Using force, threatening to use force or physically obstructing access to reproductive health care is unlawful,” she added, before referring to the 1993 murder of a Florida abortionist. “As we mark the 30th anniversary of the FACE Act, it’s important that we not lose sight of the history of violence against reproductive health care providers including the murder of Dr. David Gunn in Florida — tragic and horrific events that led to passage of the law.”

Click here to sign up for pro-life news alerts from LifeNews.com

The FACE Act is a 1994 law that supposedly protects both abortion clinics and pregnancy resource centers, but has been heavily enforced by President Joe Biden’s DOJ against pro-lifers since the June 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade.

“The Justice Department will continue to protect both patients seeking reproductive health services and providers of those services,” the DOJ official concluded. “We will hold accountable those who seek to interfere with access to reproductive health services in our country.”

Lauren Handy is the pro-life activist who received the longest sentence. She will spend 57 months in prison and was the first person sentenced for violating the FACE Act.

The enforcement of the FACE Act is led by Clarke, who, following a report from The Daily Signal, recently admitted that she hid an arrest and its subsequent expungement from investigators when she was confirmed to her Justice Department post.

The president’s critics have accused Biden and the DOJ of weaponizing the FACE Act against pro-lifers while failing to charge pro-abortion criminals for the hundreds of attacks on pregnancy resource centers since the May 2022 leak of the draft Supreme Court opinion indicating Roe would soon be overturned.

Some, among them Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, and Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, have called for the repeal of the FACE Act, arguing that it serves no purpose but to target pro-life activists.

“The Biden administration is using the FACE Act to give pro-life activists and senior citizens lengthy prison terms for non-violent offenses and protests—all while turning a blind eye to the violence, arson, and riots conducted on behalf of ‘approved’ leftist causes,” Lee told The Daily Signal in a Tuesday statement.

“Unequal enforcement of the law is a violation of the law,” he added, “and men and women who try to expose the horrors of abortion are being unjustly persecuted for their motivations.”

The DOJ’s release on the seven pro-lifers who sentenced to prison time this week describes how the pro-life activists, motivated by a desire to protect unborn babies from abortion, planned a “blockade” at Washington Surgi-Clinic in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The pro-life activists describe this type of activity as a “rescue,” hoping to stop mothers from aborting their unborn.

Under the FACE Act, such activity is considered a crime. The FACE Act prohibits use of force, obstruction, or property damage intended to interfere with “reproductive health care services.” Since 2022, the year the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the Justice Department has hit at least 40 pro-life activists with FACE-related charges at five different rescues or blockades.

The DOJ describes the D.C. event as a “clinic incursion,” noting that “the defendants met with other co-conspirators to plan their crime, which included making a fake patient appointment to ensure the group’s entry into the clinic, using chains and locks to barricade the facility and passively resisting their anticipated arrests to prolong the blockade.”

“The clinic invasion was advertised on social media as a ‘historic’ event that was live-streamed on Facebook,” the DOJ said “The defendants’ forced entry into the clinic at the outset of the invasion resulted in injury to a clinic nurse. During the blockade, one patient had to climb through a receptionist window to access the clinic, while another laid in the hallway outside of the clinic in physical distress, unable to gain access to the clinic.”

The case was investigated by the FBI’s Washington Field Office. Assistant Director in Charge David Sundberg pointed to the matter as evidence that “the FBI and our judicial system will not tolerate the obstruction of civil rights.”

“The FBI will continue to investigate FACE Act violations in all jurisdictions, so patients and providers can exercise their right to receive or provide lawful reproductive health care without the threat of violence or intimidation,” he added.

Protecting a country’s sovereignty is a precondition for democracy, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s office argues

The European Union should not attack Georgia for adopting a foreign agent law, but rather follow suit, the political director of Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s office, Balazs Orban has argued. The official insisted that measures aimed at curbing foreign influence are a key component of democracy.

On Tuesday, Georgia’s parliament passed the ‘Transparency of Foreign Influence’ bill, which requires Georgian non-profit organizations, media outlets and individuals with more than 20% foreign funding to register as entities “promoting the interests of a foreign power” and disclose their donors. Failure to comply will be punishable by a fine of up to $9,500.

US and EU officials were quick to denounce the legislation, while the law proved divisive at home as well. Thousands took to the streets of Tbilisi to protest against it, culminating in clashes with police. Critics have described the bill as similar to Russia’s ‘foreign agent’ law and fear that it will be used by the government to crack down on the opposition.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze argued that the law was needed to ensure more transparency.

Our intention is not to veto #Georgia’s Law on the Transparency of Foreign Influence, but to encourage the introduction of similar laws across the EU!

Protecting one’s #sovereignty from unwanted foreign interference is not a threat but a precondition for democracy—this is what…

    — Balázs Orbán (@BalazsOrban_HU) May 17, 2024

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Orban wrote that Hungary’s “intention is not to veto Georgia’s Law on the Transparency of Foreign Influence, but to encourage the introduction of similar laws across the EU!”

He also claimed that protecting a nation’s sovereignty from “unwanted foreign interference” is “not a threat but a precondition for democracy.”

“Instead of condemning it, EU should perhaps also follow the lead,” he concluded.

Attempts within the EU to agree on a joint statement condemning the Georgian bill by the 27 member states’ governments have so far failed. Hungary and Slovakia objected, arguing that they “did not think it is right for the EU to interfere in the domestic politics of a third country,” several media outlets reported, citing unnamed EU diplomats.

Read more Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia Shalva Papuashvili Georgia accuses NATO countries of trying to orchestrate coup

On Wednesday, the bloc’s foreign affairs chief, Josep Borrell, and the European Commission warned Tbilisi that the “adoption of this law negatively impacts Georgia’s progress on the EU path.”

Last December, EU leaders granted Georgia candidate status on the condition that it fulfill certain obligations.

According to media reports, citing anonymous European officials, Brussels is now considering reversing the visa liberalization for Georgians in order to send a message to the South Caucasian country.

Hungary’s parliament passed its own package of laws concerning the defense of national sovereignty in December, under which foreign funding of election campaigns is banned and a new Sovereignty Protection Office was created.

With Momentum In Its Favor, Gold Has Potential To Head Higher

Authored by Ven Ram, Bloomberg cross-asset strategist,

Gold looks well poised to build on this year’s gains, with speculative momentum seeming to entice marginal buying and perpetrating a virtuous circle.

Bullion is on track for a fourth successive monthly rally, with its gains so far this year of over 15%.

While those gains appear stunning, in reality, gold adjusted for prices in the economy is far less impressive. At around $2400, it is in line with the 2011/12 highs after adjusting for inflation.

Gold must be viewed for what it actually is: an asset that delivers inflation-adjusted returns in fits and spurts with a highly inconsistent trajectory. Even so, given that we are now in a world where there is little conviction of returning to a 2% inflation regime anytime soon, bullion has room to grind higher.

Over in the US, the markets are again warming up to the idea of interest rate cuts from the Fed after the softer-than-forecast inflation prints for April. Traders now seem to be converging on September for a first reduction and are factoring in nearly two cuts by year-end. Whether or not that positioning proves accurate needs to be seen, but gold traders will be inclined to price those cuts into bullion pricing first and ask questions later.

And with geopolitical tensions staying elevated, gold will find the extra bid going in its favor.

A judge has blocked an attempt by the Planned Parenthood abortion business to strike down the South Carolina heartbeat law that is saving babies from abortions.

Circuit Court Judge Daniel Coble denied the motion from the abortion giant to hit pause on the pro-life law despite false claims from Planned Parenthood that the law doesn’t give a specific timeline when an unborn baby’s heartbeat can be detected.

Coble said the state legislature clearly intended the law to begin applying an abortion ban at 6 weeks, when an unborn child’s heartbeat can clearly be detected on a sonogram. The judge also referenced the frequent use of six weeks in the South Carolina Supreme Court case last year, nothing that pro-life and pro-abortion legislators both called it a 6-week abortion ban.

“This court holds that it is clear beyond a shadow of a doubt that the General Assembly intended, and the public understood, that the time frame of the act would begin around the six-week mark,” Coble wrote in his decision.

Coble said the term “fetal heartbeat” is somewhat vague, but it does not meet the standard to be considered unconstitutional.

Click here to sign up for pro-life news alerts from LifeNews.com

“The definition of ‘fetal heartbeat’ is not clear and unambiguous and does not convey a definite meaning on its face,” Coble wrote. “Therefore, this Court must look to the intent of the General Assembly in determining, if possible, what it envisioned.”

The state argued “an embryo’s heart is beating steadily, repetitively and rhythmically” at the six-week mark but Planned Parenthood argued the abortion bans should not go into effect until 9 weeks.

The state Supreme Court ruled in August that the state’s fetal heartbeat law is constitutional.

Gov. Henry McMaster’s office called the decision “another legal victory” for the state’s heartbeat law.

“Life will continue to be protected in South Carolina, and the governor will continue his fight to protect it,” McMaster spokesman Brandon Charochak said in a statement.

The Planned Parenthood abortion business is expected to appeal.

Chinese FX Outflows Soar To Highest Since 2015 Devaluation, Priming Next Bitcoin Surge

Last October, when we pointed out that China's FX outflows had just hit a whopping $75BN - the single biggest monthly outflow since the 2015 currency devaluation - we concluded that the "unfavorable interest rate spread between China and the US will "likely imply persistent depreciation and outflow pressures in coming months", or in other words, September's biggest FX outflow in years is just the beginning, and very soon - in addition to geopolitics and central banks - the world will also be freaking out about the capital flight out of China... not to mention where all those billions in Chinese savings are going and which digital currency the Chinese are using to launder said outflows."

We wrote that on October 20 when Bitcoin was trading just under $30,000, a level it had been for much of 2023. And, just as we correctly predicted at the time...

Clockwork: every time China FX outflows surge, bitcoin erupts.

From last Friday: China Capital Flight Panic Eruptshttps://t.co/j0eWLnbFMq

... following this surge in Chinese FX outflows, bitcoin - traditionally China's preferred means to circumvent Beijing's great capital firewall since gold is, how should one put it, a bit more obvious when crossing borders - promptly exploded more than 100% higher in the next 4 months.

And while conventional wisdom is that this surge in the price of the digital currency was largely due to the January launch of Bitcoin ETFs, what many missed was a Reuters story in January which reiterated our original thesis from back in 2015, according to which much more than ETFs, and much more than rapidly shifting sentiment or frankly any day-to-day newsflow, it is China's massive wall of inert capital that has been the biggest driver of bitcoin moves, and never more so than during periods of FX and capital outflows which usually precede some form of capital controls.

We bring all this up because seven months after our first correct prediction that China's spike in FX outflows would send bitcoin surging, it's time to do it again.

One wouldn't know it, however, if one merely looked at the official Chinese FX reserve data published by the PBOC, here nothing sticks out. In fact, at $3.2 trillion, despite a rather notable drop for April, reported Chinese reserves are now near the highest level in past four years, and monthly flows are very much stable as shown in the chart below.

The problem, of course, is that as we have explained previously China's officially reported reserves are woefully (and purposefully) inaccurate of the bigger picture.

Instead if one uses our preferred gauge of FX flows, one which looks at i) onshore outright spot transactions; ii) freshly entered and canceled forward transactions, and iii) the SAFE dataset on “cross-border RMB flows, we find that China's net outflows were a massive $86BN in April, up from $11BN in February and $39BN in March and the fastest pace of outflows since the September spike in FX outflows which we duly noted half a year ago.

Drilling down, in April, we saw $50BN in net outflows via onshore outright spot transactions, and $1BN outflows via freshly entered and canceled forward transactions. Another SAFE dataset on "cross-border RMB flows" showed outflows of $35bn in the month, suggesting net receipt of RMB from onshore to offshore, likely on the back of Stock Connect outflows, but the "unusual flow" really could be anything including the unexplained  capital flight into gold and bitcoin. Ours - and Goldman's - preferred FX flow measure therefore suggests FX outflows were really $86BN in April, more than double the official net FX outflows of $39BN in the month.

How did we get this number? First, the portfolio investment channel showed net outflows in March after adjusting for cross-border RMB receipts. Stock Connect flows showed around US$9bn outflows, vs. US$8bn outflows in March. Foreigners kept buying RMB bonds - the bond market saw US$7bn inflows in April, vs. US$6bn in March.

Finally, the current account channel also showed faster net outflows. Despite a sizeable goods trade surplus in April, we saw a small outflow of $2bn related to goods trade in April vs. an inflow of $14bn in March. The services trade deficit widened to $22bn vs. $18bn in March. The income and transfers account showed outflows of $5bn in April, faster than the $2bn outflows in March.

At the time when FX outflows were re-acclererating, the broad USD strengthened further in April, and more importantly, the USDCNY spot drifted higher, as one would expect when there is capital flight... Oh, and Bitcoin traded at its record high above $70K.

And while Chinese policymakers are still keen on maintaining FX stability (or at least create that impression) as the countercyclical factors in the daily CNY fixing remained deeply negative and front-end CNH liquidity tightened notably in recent weeks, the reality is that with China desperate to boost its exports at a time when its great mercantilist competitor, Japan, has hammered the yen to the lowest level in 3 decades, it is only a matter of time before the currency devaluation advocates win, as they did in 2015.

We hope that we don't have to remind readers that the first big trigger for bitcoin's unprecedented eruption higher starting in 2015 was - you guessed it - China's August 2015 FX devaluation, as we correctly noted at the time when we predicted that bitcoin would explode from $250 to the tens of thousands.

So don't be surprised if in the next 6 months Bitcoin doubles again, and the move has nothing to do with ETF inflows, the halving, or frankly anything else taking place in the US... and instead is entirely driven by China's massive wall of money which at last check was almost 3x bigger than the US.

The secretary general of the US-led bloc has made a statement to mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia

NATO will stand up for the rights of LGBTQ people, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg declared on Friday.

He was among hundreds of Western public officials, institutions and organizations to make a statement affirming the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).

“NATO exists to defend 32 nations, and our peoples’ right to live freely & in peace,” Stoltenberg posted on X, formerly Twitter. “On the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia & Transphobia, and every day: all love is equal. LGBTQ+ people deserve respect & dignity, and I am proud to call myself your ally.”

The overwhelming majority of responses to Stoltenberg’s posts were negative, however.

“And the relationship between a mutual defense military alliance with the rights of certain minorities is…?” one X user wondered. Others brought up the bloc’s offensive wars against Yugoslavia (1999) and Libya (2011), and the fact that it spent 20 years in Afghanistan helping the US to “replace the Taliban with the Taliban.”

“You just made me support Russia a bit more,” read another response, while someone else wondered whether the Russians had somehow managed to hack Stoltenberg’s account.

Another social media user accused him of “pinkwashing war crimes and warmongering,” using a term that describes individuals or organizations who embrace the LGBTQ agenda to deflect attention from their bad behavior.

IDAHOBIT was conceived in 2004 by a French gay activist. Organizations such as the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association (ILGA), the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC), the World Congress of LGBT Jews and the Coalition of African Lesbians endorsed the project, leading to the first celebration in 2005.

May 17 was chosen as the date, commemorating the removal of homosexuality from the international classification of diseases by the WHO in 1990.

“Transphobia” was added to the name in 2009, followed by “biphobia” in 2015, resulting in the acronym in its current form.

It was the murder trial of the century. Scott Peterson was tried and convicted of killing his wife Laci when she was eight months pregnant with their son Connor. After the bodies of his wife and child washed up on shore Scott was sentenced to life in prison without the opportunity for parole.

That trial captivated millions of Americans and showcased a serious problem in America.

Murder is one of the leading causes of death for pregnant women according to a study funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Women who are pregnant or up to one year postpartum have a 35% higher risk of dying by homicide than women who were not pregnant.

The Laci Peterson case isn’t alone in grabbing headlines. A quick online search produced these more recent cases which according to statistics are just the tip of the iceberg, abortion is a tool of control.

Logan Barclay of Wisconsin was arrested in April 2024 for the death of his pregnant girlfriend. He confessed to shooting Kiersten Hansen because she was pregnant and refused to get an abortion. Barclay told detectives that when she wouldn’t stop talking about the pregnancy, he shot her in the stomach. He told police that when he shot her, she “freaked out and dropped to her knee, and I walked away.”

Karylin Fiengo was shot and left in a Florida park. She was approximately 12 weeks pregnant at the time. Her boyfriend, Donovan Faison was arrested and charged with two counts of felony homicide – one for the mother and another for her unborn child. Faison was angry that Karylin refused to have an abortion.

Raquiah King was found with a bullet in her back. The autopsy showed she was 12 weeks pregnant. Emmanuel Coble, her partner, did not want to be a father. After considerable pressure, he coerced her into making an appointment for an abortion at Planned Parenthood, but once there Raquiah changed her mind.

Her mother reported that Raquiah told her if anything happened to her, Emmanuel was responsible. Coble, a junior grade lieutenant in the US Navy was arrested and charged with the deaths of his girlfriend and their unborn child.

Candace Pickens loved being a mom to her three-year-old son Zachaeus and rebuffed her partner, Nathaniel Dixon’s insistence she get an abortion. In an act of pure evil, Dixon executed Candace at close range with a gun. Compounding this heartless violence he also shot Zachaeus in the head, but the child survived. The boy now lives with the memory of seeing his mother brutally killed. Dixon was charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.

Research shows that as many as 64% of American women feel coerced or forced into having an abortion. Another study shows the incidence of pregnancy-associated murders is rising in the United States.

This is further evidence that abortion hasn’t liberated women. Abortion is a tool of control. It is being used manipulate their behavior and in a growing number of cases, because it has debased the value of women, their lifeless bodies are cast aside if they don’t do their partners’ bidding.

“Many persons . . . pronounce Antinominaism to be nothing more than Calvinism run to seed”

John Evans, A Sketch of the Denominations of the Christian World (1808)*

The political scientist C. Northcote Parkinson once said that the road from aristocracy to democracy begins with sympathy for younger brothers.  To endure as a exclusive elect, an aristocracy must enforce rigid primogeniture, priority in birth-order being the indispensable requirement for election.  But fraternal affection and a healthy fear of assassination caused high-born big brothers to cut their little brothers some slack, and the trek to democracy was begun.

Robert Frost tells us that there is something that does not love a wall, and there is likewise something that does not like a cutoff.  I say this as a professor who has just passed through the furnace of final grades, and whose ears are therefore ringing with the lamentations of students who wound up one point below the cutoff for an A, or a B, or a C,  or a D.  Pointing to the students who wound up one point above the cutoff, these malcontents reproach me with the words, “there but for a miserable two points go I!”

These are not trivial arguments.  Another American poet, John Greenleaf Whittier, places these mornful words in the mouth of every man who did not “make the grade.”

“Meanwhile, the sport of seeming chance,
    The plastic shapes of circumstance,
What might have been we fondly guess
If earlier born, or tempted less.”**

Every athlete knows the extraordinary sting of losing a close contest, and I suppose this is why softies began to hand out silver and bronze medals.  And once they started handing out silver and bronze medals, they were on the road to ribbons for all.

God’s mercy is of course what my students euphemistically call “extra credit.”  Every professor’s semester ends with pleas for “extra credit,” a phrase that in a student’s mouth means that I will raise their score and they will pretend to do extra work.  I have often thought that offering me an outright bribe would be more honorable.  In any case, the plea for God’s mercy is always a plea that he bend the rules just for me.

I cannot begin to count the times I have explained to an extra-credit-seeking student that I cannot justly raise their score for pretended extra work unless I raise everyone’s score for pretended extra work, and that the result of this charade would be to simply raise the cutoff.

Although, if I am being honest, that would not be the result because it makes me feel good—not just pleasurably but morally good—to simply inflate students’ grades.

It also forfends unpleasantness, and this takes me back to Parkenson’s statement that the political rights of an aristocracy will in time be universalized in a democracy.  First the elder brother bestows or finnagles some lesser rank of nobility on his younger brother.  Soon after the eldest son of this younger brother bestows or finnagles some some lesser rank of nobility on his younger brother.  Before long there is no appreciable difference between the lower orders of the aristocracy and the upper orders of the bourgeoisee.  And so on, and so forth, until you extend the franchise to hobos and madmen and women.

Roman Catholics feel good and forefend unpleasantness with the doctrine of Purgatory, which is a sort of spiritual summer school where backwards Catholics (except, perhaps, Adolf Hitler) can earn “extra credit” and graduate in August.  There are still cutoffs in this system, at least theoretically, but they are veiled cutoffs, and cutoffs that are veiled soon disappear.

As my epigraph states, Calvinists have their own method of soft-hearted spiritual grade inflation, and this is to progressively lower the cutoff for election until everyone (except, perhaps, Adolf Hitler) gets a passing grade.  Thus the old quip that antinomian universalism is “Calvinism run to seed.”

Neither camp has cause to crow.  The Catholics end up confident all black sheep straighten up and get their act together in summer school.  The Calvinists just universalize the privileges of election.

“Some of their teachers expressly maintained, that as the elect cannot fall from grace, nor forfeit the divine favor, the wicked actions they commit are not really sinful, nor are they to be considered as violations of the divine law; consequently they have no occasion either to confess their sins, or the break them off by repentance.”***

And so by whichever road they take, Christians sooner or later arrive at a doctrine that unites the best parts of atheism and Christianity.  This is how the Christian philosopher John Finas described this hybrid of worldly hedonism and Christian hope.

“eat, drink, and be merry—do just what we feel like—for tomorrow we live forever.”†

Gracie Hunt, daughter of the Kanass City Chiefs owner, is defending Harrison Butker from the woke mob after his pro-life Christian graduation speech.

Her remarks on Fox News appear below:

Steve Doocy: “America would like to know the reaction from the Hunt family regarding the kicker, Harrison Butker.”

Gracie Hunt: “I can only speak from my own experience, which is I had the most incredible mom who had the ability to stay home and be with us as kids growing up. And I understand that there are many women out there who can’t make that decision but for me in my life, I know it was really formative in my shaping me and my siblings to be who we are.”

Doocy: “So you understand what he was talking about?”

Hunt: “For sure, and I really respect Harrison and his Christian faith and what he’s accomplished on and off the field.”

Butker, a three-time Super Bowl-winning kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs, slammed Joe Biden during a commencement speech at Benedictine College recently that has gone viral on social media.

Butker and the college are both Catholic and the NFL player ripped Biden for being a hypocrite – claiming to be Catholic while ignoring the pro-life teachings of the Catholic Church.

The Chiefs player said, “Our own nation is led by a man who proudly proclaims his Catholic faith, but at the same time is delusional enough to make the Sign of The Cross during a pro-abortion rally.”

“He has been so vocal in his support for the murder of innocent babies that I’m sure to many people it appears you can be both Catholic and pro-choice,” Butker added.

The NFL distanced itself from Butker’s comments.

“Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity. His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger,” said NFL DEI officer, Jonathan Beane. “His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”

In his remarks, Butker also urged the Christian church to stand up stronger for Christian values.

“We need to stop pretending that the church of nice is a winning proposition,” Butker said. “…We must always speak and act in charity. But never mistake charity for cowardice.”

He continued: “The world around us says that we should keep our beliefs to ourselves whenever they go against the tyranny of diversity, equity and inclusion. We fear speaking truth, because now, unfortunately, truth is in the minority.”

The US Secretary of State’s sudden trip to Ukraine belies the West’s concern about recent Russian advances

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken admitted during his visit to Kiev this week that the situation in Ukraine has deteriorated. This is mainly due to the Russian offensive in Kharkov Region. He promised not to leave Ukraine without support, promising that the next batches of Western weapons would soon – in particular air defense systems. He also reiterated that Ukraine’s future membership in NATO is still on the table and that Russia must pay for the country’s reconstruction.

Blinken’s arrival was unexpected, and it betrayed the critical stage currently reached in the conflict. The US is urging Kiev to carry out an effective mobilization, and seems to hope society will reorganize itself in some way. By the way, this is the most important question: what do Ukrainians themselves think they should do next, and how do they want things to be? But let us continue.

At almost the same time, Olaf Scholz was addressing journalists. The German chancellor announced a €7 billion ($7.6 billion) bailout for Ukraine. Previously, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the threat of nuclear war could be even greater now than during the Cuban missile crisis, more than 60 years ago.

It should be remembered that the Russian army has launched an offensive along a new section of the front in Kharkov Region. The Ukrainian side assures us that Kharkov city itself is not in danger. Meanwhile, Moscow seems to be trying to create a so-called cordon sanitaire around its borders, or is perhaps trying to divert Ukrainian units from other directions. There is no point in entering into a polemic on this issue, but the “critical situation” thesis is being heard more often and louder. And many people are asking pointed questions of the authorities in Kiev, as if everything was known in advance, and fortifications were promised to be built, but for some reason they were not.

Read more A military officer from the third separate assault brigade is seen doing recruitment job in Kyiv region. Zelensky’s last roll of the dice: Why is Ukraine making a new forced conscription drive?

In any case, the Westerners have clearly woken up and come to their senses, which is logical. If you talk for six months, utter all sorts of political niceties and don’t deliver weapons, there will be consequences, just as there will be consequences if you don’t do a proper mobilization.

And now they have arrived, however late. At the same time, the G7 meeting in the picturesque town of Brindisi in Italy is just a month away. Then there will be a high-level conference on Ukraine at the Bürgenstock in Switzerland, and the NATO anniversary summit in July. And there will have been no major battlefield or political successes to celebrate. At the same time, the world is also, strangely enough, on the brink of a nuclear catastrophe. One could say to our former Western partners: “it’s your own fault, gentlemen.”

So we come to a very simple conclusion. If there are no results yet, that means they have to be achieved somehow. The question is how. The answer is obvious: by responding to the raising of the stakes. We would just like to point out that no one is talking about a peaceful scenario; the next round of confrontation has arrived. Perhaps it will lead to a sudden peaceful solution, but we should not be too optimistic. Another thing we would like to point out is that Western Europe is practically powerless without America, no matter how much Emmanuel Macron threatens to invade. And secondly, according to the West, Ukraine cannot, or at least should not, lose.

Abortion is taking center stage in the race for a seat on the Georgia Supreme Court, as former Democratic U.S. Rep John Barrow challenges incumbent Justice Andrew Pinson.

WABE reported that Barrow has built his campaign almost entirely around promises to keep abortion legal, which critics have said violates judicial codes requiring him to remain impartial.

In response, Barrow has filed a federal lawsuit, claiming that any regulations limiting his ability to share his personal opinions in his campaign violate his First Amendment right to free speech.

Barrow’s campaign this year marks the fourth time he has run for a seat on the state Supreme Court since 2020, but he has never made it to the ballot. Pinson, who has not stated his opinions on abortion, was appointed by Republican Gov. Brian Kemp in 2022.

Prior to filing the lawsuit, Barrow received a judicial ethics complaint, which expressed concern that he stated his views “on highly sensitive disputed legal and/or political issues (which differ from the current state of Georgia law) without also emphasizing the duty of a judge to uphold the Constitution and laws of Georgia.”

The complaint lists seven instances it says Barrow violated the judicial code, including a statement on his website.

Click here to sign up for pro-life news alerts from LifeNews.com

“I’m running because we need Justices on the Georgia Supreme Court who will protect the right of women and their families to make the most personal family and health care decisions they’ll ever make,” Barrow’s website states. “Despite many fine qualities, it’s obvious from his record that the incumbent, Justice Pinson, cannot be counted on to do that.”

The complaint pointed out that justices cannot and should not be expected to protect or fight for selected rights.

Barrow has also posted several statements on Facebook, urging people to vote for him “to keep the rights of healthcare decisions in the hands of women and families!” His campaign commercial reflects similar statements, which earned him more criticism, as it does not promote “public confidence in the independence, integrity, or impartiality of the judiciary.”

A spokesperson for Pinson told WABE that Barrow has ignored Georgia’s judicial ethics code.

“His lawsuit makes clear that his goal is to negatively politicize judicial races and destroy Georgians’ trust in fair and impartial courts,” the spokesperson added.

WABE reported that in Georgia’s contested Supreme Court races, the incumbent has historically almost always won. The only time a challenger won the race against an incumbent was before the Civil War.

WABE added that contested races have previously been apolitical, but the current race between Barrow and Pinson has quickly become partisan thanks to abortion taking center stage.

In early May, several former state justices, Judicial Qualifications Commission officials, and State Bar presidents signed a letter expressing concern about introducing a partisan campaign.

“Judicial candidates are required to stand for election as nonpartisans—after all, justice is not partisan—and they are forbidden by judicial ethics law to make public statements and promises about cases and issues that might come before the court to which they seek election,” the coalition stated, continuing:

If it were otherwise—if judges were permitted to campaign on commitments that they would decide particular cases and issues in particular ways—the courts would become just another political institution, and public confidence in our judicial system would quickly erode. …

There are several contested judicial races on the ballot for the upcoming May 21 elections, including one for Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court. Voters will have the opportunity to demand that our judges be nonpartisan and refrain from making public commitments about how they will decide cases and issues.

According to WABE, Barrow responded to the letter by saying that voters need to know what the justices stand for in order to have confidence in the judiciary.

Barrow is supported by pro-abortion groups, including Planned Parenthood Southeast Advocates. Pro-life groups, including the Georgia Life Alliance, are concerned about the judiciary becoming biased and politicized.

The outcome of the race will be determined by elections on May 21.

Is Buffett's Cash Hoard A Market Warning?

Authored by Lance Roberts via RealInvestmentAdvice.com,

Every year, investors anxiously await the release of Warren Buffett’s annual letter to see what the “Oracle of Omaha” says about the markets, the economy, and where he is placing his money.

“One of the longest-running traditions in modern finance is that every year, one Saturday morning in late February, the world’s financial class – from professionals to mere amateurs – sit down as they have for the past 65 or so years – for an hour and read the latest Berkshire annual letter written by Warren Buffett. In that letter, the man seen by many as the world’s greatest investor, wrote down his reflections, observations, aphorisms and other thoughts which are closely parsed and analyzed for insight into what he may do next, what he thinks of the current economy and market climate, or simply for insights into how to become a better investor.” – Tyler Durden

This year’s letter was no different, with various tidbits about the current market and investing environment for investors to digest. The one thing that got most of my attention was his comments about the recent surge in cash holdings. Buffett’s cash and short-term investments (read T-bills) exceed $189 billion as of Q1, 2024.

To put that into context, that $189 billion cash pile alone would make Berkshire the 58th-largest economy in the world, only slightly smaller than Hungary.

There are two critical messages regarding Buffett’s cash hoard. The first is that due to the size of Berkshire Hathaway, which is approaching a $1 Trillion market capitalization, acquisitions have to be of substantial size. As Warren previously noted:

“There remain only a handful of companies in this country capable of truly moving the needle at Berkshire, and they have been endlessly picked over by us and by others. Some we can value; some we can’t. And, if we can, they have to be attractively priced.”

Such was an essential statement. One of the most intelligent investors in history suggests that deploying Buffett’s cash hoard in meaningful size is difficult due to an inability to find reasonably priced acquisition targets. With a $189 war chest, there are plenty of companies that Berkshire could either acquire outright, use a stock/cash offering, or acquire a controlling stake in. However, given the rampant increase in stock prices and valuations over the last decade, they are not reasonably priced.

    In other words:

“Price is what you pay, value is what you get.” – Warren Buffett

    The Valuation Dilemma

The problem with the valuation dilemma is that historically, such has preceded market repricings.

One of Warren Buffett’s favorite valuation measures is the market capitalization to GDP ratio. I have modified it slightly to use inflation-adjusted numbers. This measure is simple: stocks should not trade above the value of the economy. The reason is because economic activity provides revenues and earnings to businesses.

As discussed in “Stock Markets Are Detached From Everything,” the current environment is anything but opportunistic for a value investor like Warren Buffett. To wit:

“While stock prices can deviate from immediate activity, reversions to actual economic growth eventually occur. Such is because corporate earnings are a function of consumptive spending, corporate investments, imports, and exports. The market disconnect from underlying economic activity is due to psychology. Such is particularly the case over the last decade, as successive rounds of monetary interventions led investors to believe ‘this time is different.’”

There is a correlation between economic activity and the rise and fall of equity prices. For example, in 2000 and again in 2008, corporate earnings contracted by 54% and 88%, respectively, as economic growth declined. Such was despite calls for never-ending earnings growth before both previous contractions.

As earnings disappointed, stock prices adjusted by nearly 50% to realign valuations with weaker-than-expected current earnings and slower future earnings growth. So, while stock markets are once again detached from reality, looking at past earnings contractions suggests such deviations are not sustainable.

With the current market capitalization to GDP ratio data outside the historical range as economic growth slows, you can understand Berkshire’s dilemma of deploying cash.

The risk of overpaying for assets comes down to sustaining current profitability.

Berkshire’s issue of finding “reasonably priced” acquisitions is not just one of being overly picky about opportunities. After more than a decade of monetary infusions and zero interest rates, most companies are priced well beyond what economic dynamics can support.

The second message from Buffett’s cash hoard was more of a warning.

Buffett’s Cash Looking For A Crash?

“Occasionally, markets and/or the economy will cause stocks and bonds of some large and fundamentally sound businesses to be strikingly mispriced. Indeed, markets can – and will – unpredictably seize up or vanish as they did for four months in 1914 and a few days in 2001. If you believe American investors are now more stable than in the past, think back to September 2008. Speed of communication and the wonders of technology facilitates instant worldwide paralysis, and we have come a long way since smoke signals. Such instant panics won’t happen often – but they will happen.

Berkshire’s ability to immediately respond to market seizures with both huge sums and certainty of performance may offer us an occasional large-scale opportunity. Though the stock market is massively larger than it was in our early years, today’s active participants are neither more emotionally stable nor better taught than when I was in school. For whatever reasons, markets now exhibit far more casino-like behavior than when I was young. The casino now resides in many homes and daily tempts the occupants.

One investment rule at Berkshire has not and will not change: Never risk permanent loss of capital. Thanks to the American tailwind and the power of compound interest, the arena in which we operate has been – and will be – rewarding if you make a couple of good decisions during a lifetime and avoid serious mistakes.” – Warren Buffett

In other words, he holds such high cash levels to take advantage of market dislocations. Such is what happened in 2008 when the prestigious “white shoe” investment firm of Goldman Sachs came begging with “hat in hand” for a bailout to avoid bankruptcy. Buffett was glad to oblige by providing a massive infusion of capital at lucrative terms. During a crisis, those who “have the gold make the rules.”

Is there such an opportunity coming in the future? The answer is most likely yes. If we examine corporate profits as they relate to economic growth, we find another measure of excess. The chart below measures the cumulative change in the S&P 500 index compared to corporate profits. Again, when investors pay more than $1 for $1 worth of profits, those excesses are eventually reversed. The current deviation of the market from underlying profitability suggests that eventual reversion will be pretty unkind to investors.

The correlation is more evident in the market versus the price-to-corporate profits ratio. Again, since corporate profits are ultimately a function of economic growth, the correlation is not unexpected. Hence, neither should the impending reversion in both series. Currently, that ratio is approaching levels that preceded more significant market reversions to realign the markets to profitability.

As noted, the high correlation is unsurprising. Investors should expect an eventual reversal with the market on the more extreme end of the valuation spectrum. However, those reversals can take much longer to occur than logic would assume.

Investors believe the deviation between fundamentals and fantasy doesn’t matter as long as the Fed supports asset prices. Such a point remains challenging to argue.

However, as is always the case, the reversion of excesses will occur. Buffett’s cash hoard suggests that he realizes that such a reversion is not unprecedented. More importantly, he wants to capitalize on it when it occurs.

The United States Constitution specifies that gold and silver are money. “No State shall … make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts,” declares the Constitution. Further, one of the enumerated powers the Constitution lists for the US Congress is the power to “coin Money” (not print money) and “regulate the Value thereof.” Indeed, coining money containing gold and silver was ordered by the new US Congress via the Coinage Act of 1792. Lower value coins such as pennies and half pennies containing copper also circulated.

Using gold and silver as money put restraint on government spending. Coins could only be produced if the precious metals were first obtained. And there was a limit to the circulation of paper currency as well so long as it was certificates holders could redeem for gold or silver. Print too much, and the currency would collapse in value with the failure to honor redemption.

Today, however, US currency and coins are far removed from the nature envisioned in the Constitution. Gold coins were withdrawn in the 1930s. Then, in the 1960s silver was replaced in half dollar, quarter, and dime coins. Most of the copper was replaced with zinc in pennies in the 1980s. Nickels themselves may soon be made mainly of something other than copper and nickel as nickels now have a metal value higher than their face value. As far as half pennies, it is long past the time new ones have been made or any are seen routinely in circulation.

Without the discipline imposed by gold and silver, inflation has been so extreme that the 1960s and earlier coins containing silver are now, measured in dollars, worth over twenty times their face value; the amount is over one hundred times for gold coins from the 1930s and earlier.

In short, the American people have been robbed. The Constitution was supposed to protect them, but in the end it did not.

There is some hope for a return to sound money — money held in check by its precious metals content. Some of this hope arises from action in state governments to remove barriers to the practicality of people using gold and silver as money. One key action is eliminating the taxation of gold and silver upon its sale or exchange. Jp Cortez wrote last week at the Mises Institute about Nebraska becoming the 12th state to eliminate state capital gains taxes on sales and exchanges of gold and silver.

Also last week, Rep. Alex Mooney (R-WV) reintroduced his Monetary Metals Tax Neutrality Act (HR 8279) in the US House of Representatives. The bill seeks to remove the US capital gains tax burden from gold and silver sales and exchanges. A press release from the Sound Money Defense League, where Cortez works as executive director, quotes Mooney as follows regarding his bill:

‘My view, which is backed up by language in the U.S. Constitution, is that gold and silver coins are money and are legal tender,’ Rep. Mooney said.

‘If they’re indeed U.S. money, it seems there should be no taxes on them at all. So, why are we taxing these coins as collectibles?’

Right on. Hopefully, more states will keep eliminating taxes on gold and silver sales and exchanges, along with other legal measures inhibiting the holding and using of precious metals. And, hopefully, majority support will emerge in the US Congress for reinstating respect for constitutionally supported sound money.

Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the birth of the Catholic Church.

This outpouring of the Holy Spirit empowered the Apostles to continue Christ's mission of spreading the Good News throughout the world.

Pentecost serves as an invitation for Catholics to embrace the Holy Spirit's life-changing presence.

It encourages us to be open to the Spirit's guidance, to cultivate His fruits and gifts, and to actively participate in the mission of the Church.

By doing so, Catholics strive to bear witness to the love of God, spread the Gospel, and build communities of faith, hope, and charity.

Here are five things every Catholic should know about the Holy Spirit:

    1) The Holy Spirit is a person.

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Holy Trinity.

    2) The Holy Spirit is fully God.

All three persons of the Holy Trinity are fully God and “equal in glory.” As a divine person, Catholics believe the Holy Spirit possesses the same nature and essence as the Father and the Son, sharing in their divinity.

    3) The Holy Spirit has always existed.

God eternally exists as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

    4) You receive the Holy Spirit at Baptism and Confirmation.

We first receive the Holy Spirit in Baptism. Then, the Sacrament of Confirmation strengthens in us the gift of the Holy Spirit. This indwelling presence helps believers grow in holiness, conforming them more closely to the image of Christ.

    5) Christians are temples of the Holy Spirit.

We have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. We must live accordingly. He provides believers with spiritual gifts and fruits, empowers them to live virtuous lives, and guides the Church in its mission.

The Holy Spirit is considered essential for understanding and living out the teachings of Jesus Christ, fostering unity within the Church, and promoting the growth of faith among believers.

Saint Augustine’s Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit,
that my thoughts may all be holy.
Act in me, O Holy Spirit,
that my work, too, may be holy.
Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit,
that I love but what is holy.
    Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit,
to defend all that is holy.
Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit,
that I always may be holy.

    Amen.

Christians on X are rallying behind Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker for his commencement speech at a Catholic college in Kansas, especially after his remarks were met with backlash from the NFL and secular media.

Butker encouraged the Benedictine College graduates on May 12 “to be authentically and unapologetically Catholic,” as CatholicVote previously reported.

In the speech, he condemned abortion, in vitro fertilization, surrogacy, “Pride month,” and euthanasia. He also spoke of his love for the traditional Latin Mass, and about the importance of living out one’s vocation according to God’s will to become a saint.

His address went viral, and was met with vocal criticism from people who took offense at his words. In response to the backlash, many Catholics and conservatives on X have since been expressing their support of the commencement address.

Additionally, College Football Hall of Fame Coach Lou Holtz expressed his support of Butker’s speech.

“Thank you [Harrison Butker] for standing strong in your faith values,” Holtz wrote on his X account. “Your commencement speech at Benedictine College showed courage and conviction and I admire that. Don’t give in.”

Holtz also included a link to a statement in support of Butker, and wrote: “Sign here to thank Super Bowl Champion Harrison Butker, a true man of God.”

Catholic Daily Wire podcast host Michael Knowles wrote in a post on his X account, “[Butker’s speech] is without question, beginning to end, the greatest college commencement speech delivered in my lifetime.”

During his podcast show on May 16, Knowles expanded on his statement and played an excerpt from the speech when Butker spoke about his love for his wife.

“I can tell you that my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother. I’m on the stage today and able to be the man I am because I have a wife who leans into her vocation,” Butker said, according to a transcript of his speech published by the National Catholic Register.

Butker began to hold back tears as he continued, “I’m beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me, but it cannot be overstated that all of my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.”

Knowles then said on his show, “The man here is on the verge of tears, pouring out an expression of love for his wife, and the libs and the feminists are accusing him of misogyny–for saying that he loves his wife and [that] she excels in her role as homemaker and a mother and a wife.”

Grazie Pozo Christie, M.D., a doctor and member of the Catholic Association, also praised Butker’s speech on her X account, writing:

    Lovely speech.

The leftist pearl-clutchers are horrified at the term “homemaker”.

They pretend they don’t know that the West is full of mothers working for money for a random boss in an office or factory when they’d give anything to be home working for love of their children and husband.

On May 15, the NFL gave People Magazine an official statement about Butker’s speech that reads: “Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity. His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”

Sean Davis, founder of the online conservative publication the Federalist, slammed the hypocrisy of the NFL’s statement about Butker’s speech.

“The NFL was quicker to condemn Butker for being a Christian than it was to condemn Ray Rice for caving in his fiancee’s head on camera and then dragging her lifeless body through the hall,” he wrote in a post on X.

Clay Travis, an author and lawyer, wrote of the NFL statement on his X account: “The NFL has publicly condemned Harrison Butker’s private political opinions. Has the league ever publicly condemned any other player’s private political opinions or comments for any reason? I can’t recall it.”

A Catholic priest on X, Fr. R. Vierling, posted, “Any statement from the [NFL] on its players convicted of crimes? It seems the only offense for the #NFL is a Roman Catholic man proclaiming Catholic teaching on a Catholic campus before a Catholic audience.”

petition was formed on Change.org calling for Butker to be dismissed from playing for the Chiefs because of his remarks.

One Catholic account on X, LanguageGeek95, responded to this petition with a post that read: “They’ll say they’re tolerant of your Catholicism until you say you believe what the Church teaches.”

The LOOPCast host Tom Pogasic also responded to the petition, writing on his X account:

So we have to listen to athletes and celebrities lecture us on climate change, transing children, COVID, the evil of white people, Men in women’s sports, and abortion.

But expressing basic Catholic views is a bridge too far.

    Got it.

EWTN Digital Media Specialist Christina Herrera responded to the petition similarly, writing on her X account:

We have to listen to celebrities and athletes push/celebrate abortion, pride month, IVF, men purchasing babies via surrogacy, trans surgeries for minors, and other morally reprehensible positions on a regular basis but Catholics can’t offer their point of view?

We aren’t allowed to openly talk about our faith in a Catholic setting? We can’t push back and publicly praise Jesus and His sacraments? We can’t publicly acknowledge the sanctity of Holy Matrimony, motherhood, fatherhood, or any traditional viewpoint? We can’t call a sin a sin?

    Suddenly it’s hate speech?

    Make it make sense.

In a more ironic tone, Catholic author Jesse Kelly wrote of the commencement controversy on his X account: “Harrison Butker is dead wrong about women and you can tell by how calmly his comments were received. Clearly he insulted some very happy, content people.”

In another X post, Christiana Herrera pointed out: “[I don’t know] who needs to hear this but Butker received a standing ovation from the crowd.”

Washington continues to harbor a “Cold War mentality,” according to Beijing

US policies are directly responsible for the Ukraine crisis, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Friday, reacting to the latest accusations from Washington of Beijing’s supposed complicity in the conflict.

On Thursday, US State Department spokesman Vedant Patel claimed that China can’t enjoy strong relations with Europe and the collective West while “continuing to fuel the biggest threat to European security” by “fueling Russia’s defense-industrial base.”

In turn, Wang urged the US to “stop shifting the blame on China [and] not try to drive a wedge between China and Europe.”

“This is a reflection of the Cold War mentality that still dominates US thinking, which bears unshirkable responsibility for the eruption and escalation of the Ukraine crisis,” he stated. The spokesman argued that Washington is clearly “looking for enemies instead of seeking peace” in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

He further urged US authorities to stop “fueling the flame” with unfounded accusations and instead “start making real a contribution to finding a political solution” to the crisis.

“China is not the creator of or a party to the Ukraine Crisis. We have been on the side of peace and dialogue and committed to promoting peace talks. We actively support putting in place a balanced, effective and sustainable European security architecture,” Wang stated.

Beijing has maintained a policy of neutrality on the Ukraine conflict and has rejected Western pressure to place sanctions on Russia, instead continuing to bolster economic ties with Moscow and expanding mutual trade. Consequently, Washington and its NATO allies have accused China of fueling Russia’s military effort by supporting its weapons manufacturing through the sale of dual-use components. The US has repeatedly threatened to place more sanctions on China if it does not stop these exports.

China staunchly denies the allegations, with officials repeatedly stating that the country is not selling weapons to either Russia or Ukraine. In an earlier statement, Wang accused the US of hypocrisy for providing billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine while “unreasonably” criticizing the “normal” trade and economic relations between Russia and China.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is currently on an official visit in China, where he has met with President Xi Jinping. In a joint statement on Thursday, the two leaders expressed firm commitment to continue bolstering ties between their respective countries. They also reiterated their stance on the Ukraine conflict, stating that it “must be resolved by political means.”

Hungary has blocked a document that supported Zelensky’s “peace plan” while ignoring other proposals, its foreign minister has said

Hungary has vetoed a Council of Europe resolution on Ukraine because it recognized only one peace plan, the so-called “peace formula” proposed by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Friday.

Zelensky’s roadmap to resolve the crisis, which he has been promoting since 2022, calls for a complete withdrawal of Russian forces from all territories Ukraine considers its own, for Moscow to pay reparations, and for a war crimes tribunal. Russia has rejected the proposals as “unrealistic” and a sign of Kiev’s unwillingness to seek a diplomatic solution to the conflict.

“Today the Council wanted to adopt a resolution recognizing only President Zelensky’s peace plan as a peace formula that should be considered and supported. This is unacceptable for us,” Szijjarto wrote on Facebook.

Instead of an “imaginary nuclear war,” “we all need real peace talks,” which are only possible with both sides in the conflict “sitting at the table” Szijjarto said.

Next month, Switzerland is expected to host a summit on Zelensky’s proposed roadmap for ending the conflict with Russia. Switzerland has sent out invitations to over 160 countries, including members of the G7, G20, BRICS, and EU. Russia, however, has not been invited to the talks.

Szijjarto noted that other countries have also proposed scenarios for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict that are “no worse than those of Ukraine’s president.” A number of alternative peace plans had previously been put forward, including proposals by China, Brazil and South Africa.

“I asked to include other peace plans in the Council of Europe resolution. This was rejected by the majority. That’s why I vetoed it so there wouldn’t be a Council resolution,” Szijjarto explained.

China has been promoting since last year a peace formula consisting of 12 points, including the cessation of hostilities, a demand for compliance with international law, the rejection of the ‘Cold War’ mentality, and mutual respect for national security concerns.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Beijing’s initiative showed “the genuine desire... to help stabilize the situation” in the region.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, he dismissed Kiev’s plan, which does not take into account the “realities on the ground.” Putin reiterated Moscow’s perception of the upcoming Swiss event as a mere ruse by Kiev and the West. The president also emphasized that Moscow remains ready for peace talks that would consider Russian interests.

World's #1 Golfer Tossed Against Car, Arrested In Kentucky -- Calls "Very Chaotic Situation"

The world's #1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested and taken to jail on several charges - including a felony charge of assaulting a police officer, after he tried to bypass a massive traffic backup to enter the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville Kentucky.

Scheffler was set to tee off for his second round of the PGA Championship at 8:48 ET alongside Wyndham Clark and Brian Harman, when he was detained and booked.

In viral footage, Scheffler was seen being led into the police car in handcuffs.

"Can you please help me?" he was heard asking a nearby journalist.

Scheffler reportedly thought he was bypassing security staff, when it was in fact cops who told him to stop due to an earlier traffic accident that he was not involved in. When he didn't, the officer attached himself to the golfer's car - which Scheffler drove approximately 30 feet before stopping, ESPN reports.

The officer is then said to have grabbed at Scheffler's car, attempting to pull him out before Scheffler opened the door - after which he was dragged out of the vehicle, thrown up against it, and placed in handcuffs.

The 27-year-old golfer was later booked into jail and released by the Louisiana Department of Corrections.

    He's been charged with:

    •     Second-degree assault of a police officer, which is a felony
    •     Third-degree criminal mischief
    •     Reckless driving
    •     Disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic

Following the arrest, ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington said "One police officer came up to me with his pad and said - pen in hand - "Can you tell me the name of the person we've just arrested?""

Earlier, when Darlington tried to get the attention of the officers, he was warned "Back up or you're going to jail also!"

"Right now, he's going to jail," another officer said. "He's going to jail and there's nothing you can do about it. Period."

Update: Scheffler, meanwhile, has described the arrest as a "big misunderstanding" following "a very chaotic situation."

This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers.  It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do.  I never intended to disregard any of the instructions.  I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.

CatholicVote President Brian Burch has called on the NFL’s leaders to clarify whether Catholics are welcome in the NFL in light of their statement denouncing the commencement speech given by Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker at a Catholic college in Kansas.

“In that speech, for which he received a standing ovation, Butker called on Catholics to live up to the high ideals of our Faith, including the defense of the dignity of every human life, the foundational role of the family, and the gift of motherhood,” Burch wrote on May 16 to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Kansas City Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt.

“These ideals are not controversial for millions of Americans and indeed remain sacred for millions of religious believers, including millions of your fans and customers,” Burch wrote. Nonetheless, a “recent statement by the league distancing itself from Butker for his remarks calls into question your commitment to genuine diversity and inclusion.”

Burch noted that the NFL claims it “honors and celebrates the broad ranges of human difference among us, while also embracing the commonalities we share, and to provide each individual with the opportunity to achieve their full potential.”

“Does this inclusion include Catholics, pro-life Americans, mothers, and those who hold to traditional moral beliefs? We certainly hope you will continue to ignore the reckless calls for Mr. Butker to be canceled, or worse,” Burch wrote:

We understand not every American, or NFL fan for that matter, may share the same opinions or beliefs as Mr. Butker.

We are hopeful, however, that you do not intend to send a message to Catholics, or to those that still uphold basic moral tenets of a civilized society, that they are outsiders and no longer welcome.

CatholicVote is also calling on Catholics to sign a petition in support of Butker, which can be accessed here.
