For many people today, practical atheism is the normal rule of life...If this attitude becomes a general existential position, then freedom no longer has any standards, then everyting is possible and permissible.

For sure the Church tax in Germany - or anywhere else - should be abolished. Any time you have a large chunk of money flowing into an organisation from people most of whom do not believe in the core mission of the organisation, we shall have a problem. That is exactly the case in Germany today.
Now, the Catholic Church in Germany supports a whole bureaucracy whose sole purpose seems to be undermining the faith.
It is difficult to see how I would be an official member of the Church in Germany if I lived there and I do not envy the hard choice of those few Catholics still left in the country, but I cannot for the life of me bring myself to support, or defend the financial support of, the morally decrepit organisation that is the Church in Germany - possibly the most anti-Catholic organisation in the country.
