I stopped using the word excruciating to describe something severe when, to my embarrassment and shame, I realized it should specifically apply to the cross. An excruciating pain is one I can't comprehend, and I shouldn't appropriate and cheapen the word to describe anything I've ever endured. The effort to breathe -- with a scourged back rubbing against a rough beam -- is surely excruciating.

Sister Carol Perry reminded a group of us what Bishop Sheen said about one of the criminals crucified with our Savior: He was a thief to the end, and then he stole Paradise.

    Beautiful. It is certainly a penance to be aware that any Good Friday observations presided over by Pope Francis today, will be presided over by one who apparently denies the existence of Hell. For what did Christ experience this torture, if it was not to release us from eternal death? The leader of Christ's Church today, mocking Christ. We may have had faulty popes before...but one who denies a foundational premise of the Faith?

      He only denies the existence of hell when he is alone with someone that wants him to deny the existence of hell. He was "accompanying" the 93 year old reporter, who is an atheist. The atheist could not handle the truth of the faith, so the Pope altered the faith to fit his needs. Welcome to the future - customizable Catholic faith, custom tailored dogma for each individual. What a revolutionary this Pope is.
