“Am I Not Here, I Who Am Your Mother?” – The Story of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Wonderful story of our loving Heavenly Mother helping her children. We need her now even more with the massive human sacrifice called legal abortion. Our Lady of Guadalupe, keep Biden away from the presidency.

Hardly any posts here. Maybe we (and I include myself) are all too busy arguing with ourselves elsewhere on the site.

“Am I Not Here, I Who Am your Mother?” is a fitting refrain to keep in mind, regardless of whoever it is that takes the office of president of the US and regardless of whether we believe it is justly so.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, please help us.

This story is so moving. I have been reading in a few places about this sacred history. Recently, someone asked a question of Charles Coulombe, on Off the Menu, about specifically Anglo orientations to Catholicism. The answer involved Thomas More and some writers, but this made me think of my rather polyglot—so to speak—embrace of so many aspects of Catholicism from different cultures, including Italian and Polish.

I was drawn to the faith in Germany, and embrace St. Martin and Hildegard of Bingen, as well the embrace of worship at cathedrals just right there (!!!) where I lived in Germany. Then I moved back to Southern California and my parish is over half hailing from Mexican origins. What a shock to see the special touches of hands of Mexican-American women at the frame of a huge mural of Our Lady of Guadalupe, as I prayed at an icon of Mary more familiar to me from the representations of the Virgin in Germany. Who was she, other than an image I had forever seen, when last I lived in California, on the ubiquitous large glass candle holders that hip ex-Catholics ironically had in their living rooms? To find out that she is Our Lady of the Americas made me feel special about her, too, even without Mexican roots. And what a story of love and reconciliation!
