It's not just that cannabis has been ignored - it's a though, in the last six months, the government, the police and the criminals have come to an agreement that it's been legalised. This without telling the general public, because now it's sickly stink can be smelled everywhere and there are blokes standing in bus stops, on street corners and even station platforms smoking it openly. Clearly a pact has been made.

As for the film 1917. I notice how many other chosen artists see their work go straight to number 1 before release. Coldplay for example. The BBC is a free advertising agency for a privileged and politically acceptable few. Much of its TV scheduling is given to promoting the goods of its favourite people. I don't know how Olivia Colman got a Golden Globe for her dire, unsmiling, lefty portrayal of our Queen. She has a left wing face (as others say) because it is sternly politically correct (compare the beaming real Elizabeth on her Silver Jubilee compared to the humourless Colman) As with her appearance in The Night Watchman the determination to cast her in the lead role (even when pregnant) spoiled an otherwise good show.

The practice of giving films awards before they’re released has been going on for decades. I believe BAFTA started doing it when they nominated Schindler’s List for their 1993 awards, when it was a February 1994 release in the UK. The reason is the films expected to win the awards tend to be scheduled for release in America at the end of the year so they will be fresh in the minds of Oscar voters. Typically they will open here early in the following year but if the awards boards played fair, they would then not be eligible for our awards for another year, by which time the awards would be useless for publicity purposes.

Own comment:

The Brexit circus distraction continues apace and Britain continues to deteriorate. The Northern Ireland soldiers' issue is the least of their problems, though it seems to be one of Peter Hichens' pet peeves.

I am certainly not against putting British soldiers on trial for their misdeeds, and if this happened more often, the world would be a much safer place.
