Own comment: 

The Turks are nothing if not good at tourism. They know full well that they need the Hagia Sophia and its surrouding areas to be on the UNESCO list for tourism reasons. If thatäs what keeps the mosaics up then so be it.

In fact, I believe that the Turks had planned on erecting the largest Marian statue in the world a few years back. I wonder what came of that.
