Cardinal Burke Justifies Receiving Gifts From Disgraced Wheeling-Charleston Bishop

Much as it has become common to criticise bishops for all sorts of things, I cannot bring myself to criticising Cardinal Burke for receiving gifts from a now-disgraced fellow bishop. This is all the more the case when he gave away the gifts to charity.

We surely cannot be under obligation to pay back gifts once it turns out many years later that they were ill-gotten, nor can we be expected to do due diligence on gifts which are not suspicious at the time of their presentation.
